Photos used for cards

It's always interesting to see the photos that were either used for baseball cards or depict the same images. Here is a recent pick up....anyone else? (the card is only for comparison, I don't own it)
|
Cool!
Leon...:I am amazed that Lou held that awkward pose for long enough to have the spectators in the back of your photo shooed out of the frame to allow the exhibit card image to be captured! ;)

Yeah, Chris, airbrushing can do some amazing things.......

I believe this photo is the basis for a N167 card. Esterbrook's demise is quite a story.

LOTS of George Burke photos used for R312, R313, R314 and 1939 and 1940 Play Ball cards in particular. Just a small sampling (in that order):

Amazing stuff guys!!! I love this kinda of stuff. I have several but here is my favorite. It was bought years ago with both exhibit cards I then added the E card and had it framed. It still needs to be reset in the frame again but I didn't want the framer to use anything with adhesive. Anyways I will get the others I have but this is my favorite. If you look close you can see the marks they used when they cropped to photo for the cards final shot. Who new there was a catcher there. :)

Here's what Sandy Koufax called the biggest World Series game of his career. It set the tone for the 4 game beatdown that the Dodgers inflected on the Bombers. This series was a "get even" series as the boys in blue, blew the deflated Yanks right out of the House that Ruth built!
The photo has become an iconic image in the Sports World of Baseball Card Collecting Baby Boomers (like most everyone here). Attachment 70971Attachment 70973 Attachment 70972 |

So here's a question: what process do you guys follow to match up a photo to a card? By that I mean, are you familiar enough with the card images that, when you happen upon the corresponding photo, you recognize it immediately? Or do you see a likely photo, and then go looking through cards for that player to make the match? Or is it something more serendipitous and in-between? Just curious as to how others go about it.

1939 Play Ball Bill Dickey
|
Lance
I'm not much into the photos, but I do pick one up every now & then. For me, sometimes I see a photo & just know I've seen the image somewhere else. So then I start looking at the player's cards. I've had the chance to buy a few others in the past, but didn't want to spend a lot and was outbid. They weren't real big stars like some of the other photos posted so far. When I saw the Dickey though, it kinda stood out like a sore thumb. Jantz |

Thanks Jimmy, that Wheat photo was actually used on the shirts one year at the national several years ago. I enjoyed wearing that shirt as Wheat was born in my home town and is mainly who I collect.

GREAT Wheat picture, Kenny! I collected him for awhile since he was a fellow Missouri guy. Since then I've moved on to other areas of collecting but still regret selling my Wheat collection (all 5 cards LOL).

Here's a 1939 Lou Gehrig TYPE 1 photo that hit the daily double, as it was used for both a card and a magazine cover! Coincidentally, both the card & magazine were issued in 1948.

Ran across this while doing some Burke photo research and thought I would revive this thread as I suspect a few more connections have been made in the last 4 months.
Hand-tinted George Burke 8x10 used in production of the Bra-Mac photo/card. Note the application of the plastic Dymo label for the number, name and year (only the name remained on the original when it passed through my hands, but evidence of the other 2 labels previously being affixed is visible). |
