Let's see those avatars...

Maybe a dum idea for a thread and maybe it's been done before, but I thought it would be neat if everyone would post their avatar and explain what it is and why they chose it. I'll start. Mine is my head on a photo of a young Mantle. Mantle is my all time fave!

Double name/name on top
I have an affinity towards the miscut T206s with double names, or name only on top. My favorite is my avatar... SGC 30 Ty Cobb Bat On Shoulder.

My very own Wonka McTitus
Thanks again to Jason Carota for noticing the resemblance in the first place and to John Wonka for the ultra-cool rendering of McTitus. Gotta love it!

I just love certain T206 portraits, and IMO this is one of the best- and I didn't see anyone else using it :)

I chose my avatar due to the fact Merle 'Doc' Adkins was my grandfather.

Yes and on that comment I wanted to say that that card you sent is by far my Daughters favorite of all. I told her the story and she thinks it cool to have it. Thanks again. |

I wanted to commemorate my favorite collectable, Detroit Old Judges. So I took the background from a Stump Weidman card. I then rotated the Old Judge banner from a Larry Twitchell card. The "Detroit" team name was also pulled from an 1887 Twitchell. Added a couple shadows and called it good.

Matty
My favorite pre-war player, and a classic pose that has Big Six looking over at each of my posts, giving them a little extra gravitas. The technique worked better on the old Net54, where the avatars were to the left of each post, instead of breaking up each post as they do now. (Yes, I am still grumpy about the switch, even if i am the only one who misses the simplicity and clarity of the old board.)

Just love the card, even though the border is a bit lacking
|
I made the avatar using a program similar to
Photoshop, using the main image of Cobb and setting him against an orange background. One of the few "untouchable" cards in my modest collection. Crease-free with well loved corners. http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/6355/e93cobb.jpg |
It is just a picture of me with a reversal of furtune after chugging a pitcher of beer.
edit to add: Where's my avatar? edit to add: Fixed it. Just wait for that 4th post. Final edit to cease offending. Sorry. |
WTF?
gee, thanks for sharing. Hopefully your fourth post will be as intriguing as your third. |
Thanks.

I just switched mine back to one I used on the old board.

like nothing more than a "troll" trying to stir things up by posting a picture to supposedly shock all of us. While I wouldn't call your avatar vulgar, I do find it hard to imagine why anyone here (yourself included) would find interest or amusement from a picture of someone (yourself included) puking, but to each their own, I suppose. Good luck with your collection. :) |

Avatar of College Baseball Program of Princeton vs Yale a few years ago.
Included a pic of penciled in score card from 113 years ago in the program. I just image a student in stands filling it in. Also included cool pic of the Princeton big honcho. |

My avater is 1 of 2 pieces I picked up about twenty years ago. Approximately 2 feet x 3 feet pieces. I also collect Old Judge Detroit cards.

No the typical "old cardboard" that you're all used to, but old cardboard nonetheless. A late 1920's Spalding Babe Ruth fielder's glove box.

Zee answer
I can't even make the avatar bigger--I don't own the card (a 1921 Zeenut, identified by a fellow net54'er in a previous thread, and now conveniently forgotten). I chose this Zeenut at random when I was picking out my avatar from a dealer's website, as at the time I did not have a functioning scanner. Never have changed it, as that is the type of guy I am. At least I collect Zeenuts, so it does have some relevance.

This is the card that caused my jaw to drop when I was shown what was to be the start of my future collection and the beginning of my life in vintage cards.

e107 Young
Mine is an e107 Young . . . which is a card I dream to own some day.
This particular card came from the 2009 REA auction. I bet someone from this board actually owns it. Anyone want to own up to be living my dream? http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/.../2009/116.html -Jonathan |

Cool piece of history |
My avatar is "Bob Brown Bear". As some of you might know, my spouse Jennifer Ettinger is an artist who has produced a number of baseball paintings and other pieces of art. As part of a city wide public art project, there was a charity fund-raiser for Easter Seals http://www.spiritbearsinthecity.com
Bob Brown is the father of Vancouver Baseball, and is pictured in the Obak set http://farm1.static.flickr.com/43/95...8bac6d95_m.jpg As such, it was natural for Jennifer to produce "Bob Brown Bear" as part of the project. Here's a link to a number of photos (127 to be exact) and a couple are here http://farm1.static.flickr.com/54/14...434bc307_m.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/142/3...0b623c68_m.jpg After a summer downtown, the bears were auctioned off. The owner of the Vancouver Canadians bought Bob Brown Bear, and Bob is now on display at Nat Bailey Stadium where the team plays, and where much of Jennifer's artwork is reproduced for display. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/...a6445fbf_o.jpg To top it off, the mascot is now "Bob Brown Bear", and they even had a bobblehead night where Bob Brown Bear was given away (seen in the photo below) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2283/...3db915570c.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/...73ff8b4f_m.jpg |
