Expose your Exhibits!
Testing out my new scanner so I thought I'd show some Exhibits... most of these came from a seller's "my grandfather's collection" which turned out to be true! Grandpa had good taste!

Ricky:
Very nice, especially the Combs. That's a really tough HOF Rookie Card to come up with. Congrats! |

Not a baseball card, not a post card (most of the time) - Exhibits don't get enough love. Here's some of my best ones.

I like Exhibit cards. I think it took a while for most of us to appreciate them...
Here are 4 of mine. I like Southworth because of his connection with the Cardinals. I'm glad he finally made it to the Hall. The Schang card has always puzzled me, it has that sticker on there, anyone recognize that sticker? Ever see one like it on anything else?? I have a Pat Collins catcher's mitt, old as the hills, belonged to a couisin of mine. Not many choices out there if you're looking for something of Collins. And then there's Catfish. http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...meexhibits.jpg Now these 2 Exhibits took me some time to acquire. I am a Cardinals fan, and wanted something of Rothrock's. I eventually got his autograph. And I think I have a Diamond Matchbook of him. Then I finally got this Exhibit. I think his other Exhibit has him on a 4in1 with the Red Sox. Think I have that... And then the 4in1 that shows Len Koenecke... what a story goes with him. He was pounding the ball, but his career came to a sudden end. There aren't many collecting options for him, either. http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...reexhibits.jpg |
Frank, that sticker is from a 1921-30 MLB Die-Cut. They were part of a game and came as sheets of the players made from thick cardboard and a seperate thin paper sheet of the names and you pasted the appropriate "label" on the player it went with. They meticulously updated these every year to reflect the new lineups for the new year--many players have these that never made it onto a "real" card so they tend to be collected by player collectors without any alternatives. Here are some examples from a partial 1927 Cleveland team set I recently put up for sale.

Thank you, Rhett!!!
I just knew someone here would know what that was. I've puzzled over it for years. I think I have a 2nd Schang Exhibit and I know none of my other Exhibits have that sticker. I think I'll leave it on there. "How did you become so wise in the way of old cards??" |

With some old HOFers I guess..
And I agree with Frank W. It took me a while to appreciate these cards ecause Goudey's, Playballs, etc were more widely dealt/promoted etc. But the real photo aspect of exhibits are fantastic. I now have to search for that c/u of Rixey (a beauty ken!) and that Marx Bros card. |

Personally Exhibits are my favorite pre-war cards! I just wish I was able to hang on to what I had, but I still have a little left over.........

1926-29 Exhibit Ruth blank back. Does anyone know, definitively, that these were not produced by the company that produced the Exhibit cards. I noticed that the same image was used in the 1920's four in one Exhibits.

Martin:
Those cards are definitively, absolutely, positively Exhibit cards. I wrote an article on this issue years ago for Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector and another one in Old Cardboard (#12, Summer 2007). In a nutshell: there was a lot of conjecture that it was not an Exhibit issue because the backs of some said "Not to be used in Exhibit machines." I ran an ad in VCBC back in 2000 asking for data on the set and I got a response from Elwood "Woody" Scharf, the man who took the first stab at detailed check-listing of this issue for The Trader Speaks in the 1970s. In our correspondence he sent me an article mentioning that another collector had informed him that he'd seen one with the Exhibit coupon on the back. Woody did not have an example or copy. Since then I have personally seen three other cards with the coupons on their backs, with the "not to be used in Exhibit machines" slogan right beside them. One of our members who does not publicize his holdings has one and I had the chance to go over it carefully. It is absolutely an Exhibit card. Here is another example from that mixed baseball-boxing 4 on 1 issue you referenced that was made using the same artwork, an issue that Woody alluded to it in his articles but could not confirm the existence of (probably because it is really tough to find): http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...sas%20back.jpg Just for a fun aside, here is an example of a strip card made from the same artwork as the PC back Exhibits (note that it is not a cut down 4 on 1--those exist too--but is readily distinguished from the Exhibits due to the thinner smoother stock used. Also below is a strip of the boxers from the related issue: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Unc%20Cobb.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...en%20Strip.jpg |
