A Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year to All (especially my East Coast fellow collectors!) ;)
I hope you all start the year off with a bang! :) My first few packages arrived and am thrilled to add them to my collection. First off is this famous 1939 TYPE 1 photo of the Iron Man. (I'm lucky Ben already had it or it could have been a blood bath!) Attachment 30049 This really cool 1965 Beatles "Help!" Whistle in original packaging that was given away at select theaters. Attachment 30050 And this 1964 Beatles Fan Club newsletter with postal cancellation that was put out by a 16 year old fan from Arizona. I just love this piece and won it for the first bid price of ten bucks! :) Attachment 30051Attachment 30052Attachment 30053 |

January 2011 pickup
1 Attachment(s)
Wow, 2011 really started off with a bang!
sayhey24 Greg listed some really cool 1973 All Star game locker tags on the BST section yesterday morning. One of these was for one of my primary collecting focuses, HOFer Nolan Ryan. Growing up an Angels fan in So Cal, Nolan Ryan was always my favorite player. The Angels era portion of my advanced Ryan collection has always been my pride and joy with special emphasis on the year 1973, which IMHO, was Ryan's best year. The site of the 1973 All Star game, KC Royals Stadium, was significant for Nolan because it had been the place that he threw his 1st of 7 career no-hitters just 2 months prior on 5/15/73. The 1973 All Star game was noteworthy for Ryan because it was the 1st time that he actually pitched in the mid-summer classic. He was added to the 1972 AL All Star roster as a special write in vote, but did not play. Ironically, in the year that Nolan Ryan dominated baseball, he got lit up at the 1973 All Star game. I believe that he called his and Angels teammate Bill Singers' appearance in the AS game "like throwing gasoline on a fire!" In an interesting side note, these 1973 locker tags first appeared on eBay several years ago. I've been bummed that I didn't get the Ryan 1973 All Star locker tag the 1st time around, but sometimes in this hobby you get lucky and get a second crack at a special item. Thanks to Greg I added this one yesterday! :D Happy 2011 to all of you on net54! |

Thought I would share the Cap Anson Cigar Box as this was my favorite pickup from 2010. Happy New Year to everyone ! - Ray |

Picked up this ORIGINAL Teds Creamy Root Beer tray and 12 oz bottle(1959). These are hard to find. You see lots of the fantasy pieces and reproductions associated with this issue, but rarely does the real thing pop up.

[QUOTE=thekingofclout;860019]Boy Joe, you're not kidding. Those are very tough. I can't get over the condition. Just tremendous. Congrats.
Just picked this up. Marilyn Monroe Original Vicente Pharmacy Receipt Dated May 12 1962. Just 3 months later she would be dead of an overdose. Jimmy, Looks like Marilyn was buying bottles of peroxide in order to keep up those platinum blond looks. This also makes this a cool receipt in addition to the obvious historical connection... |
What I find fascinating about some of you guys pickups, with the Marilyn receipt in mind in this case, is not just having the financial means, but WHERE DO YOU FIND THIS STUFF? I know there are major auctions all the time, etc etc, but man, some of this stuff is world class and it seems to pop out of the woodwork.

1944 Pacific Service World Series ticket- Johnny VanderMeer
1 Attachment(s)
I just picked up a pretty neat ticket from the 2nd game of the 1944 Pacific Service World Series that was played on September 23, 1944.
In this game, "Double No-Hit" Cincinnati Reds hurler Johnny VanderMeer and the Navy team bested losing pitcher Al Lein (of SF Seals PCL) and the Army 8-2. The 1944 Pacific League Championship Series (World Series) was the brainchild of Army Chief of Staff George Marshall, who in the spring of 1944, determined that there were over 280 former major league players in active military service. The Series that pitted the Army and Navy's best was an 11 game series played at different military bases in Hawaii between Sept. 22, 1944 and Oct. 15th, 1944. Behind the mostly outstanding pitching of the Navy staff the Navy team won 9 of the 11 games. Some of the major leaguers that played in this Pacific Service World Series included: Johnny VanderMeer, Virgil Trucks (he also threw 2 no-hitters while playing with the Tigers in 1952), Phil Rizzuto, Bill Dickey, Schoolboy Rowe, Johnny Beazley, Joe Gordon, Joe Grace, Ken Sears, Tom Ferrick. Hugh Casey, Johnny Mize, Barney McCloskey, Walter Judnich and Johnny Lucadello to name a few. This is a pretty neat ticket. I've got to wonder how many of these survived after all of these years? |

one heck of a score for me. TWO Buster Keaton autographs. It isnt the greatest photo ever but a signed Keaton photo is hard to find. The menu is from 1920 making it the earliest Keaton autograph I have ever seen and it has Tom Mix twice as well!

1941 game used ball
1 Attachment(s)
This Harridge baseball was fouled off by Al Brancato of the Athletics on July 10, 1941. Further research shows that the opposing pitcher in that game was Bob Feller. He went the distance for his 99th career win. He won his 100th on his next start 4 days later.

Very sweet ball. |
How cool is it to hold that ball and to know that Bob Feller held it on a major league mound in 1941?

I just got this guy in the mail:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...teRose1985.jpg Here we have Rose hitting his 4,192nd hit, becoming MLB's all-time leader. Don't know if it's a Type 1 or not (not that it matters), but there is a more modern slug and UPI stamp on the back - if that means anything to anyone, that is. Either way, I thought it could be a nice image for a painting! Graig |

estate auction pickups
Busy day at the estate auction game, as My dad and I picked up a decent group of pennants, and a few early football and baseball relics. In the group was a red and blue stitch baseball and a smaller sized red stitched baseball. The smaller one is probably just about a 1/2 inch less in diameter than the other ball. Has anyone seen a smaller ball like this one? Did they make smaller sized balls for kids in the 1910 to 1920 time period? I know newer little league balls are the same size as regular balls, and it doesn't make sense to make them smaller for kids as they'd be harder to hit anyway. Could this be an earlier 19th century example? Any advice would be appreciated. The football pieces included a Wright and Ditson dog ear, reach shoulder pads, and an unmarked football.
Nice helmet by the way Kevin, any makers mark visible? http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p.../baseballs.jpg http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...n/pennants.jpg http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...in/group-1.jpg |
no makers mark on mine that i could see. what do these dog ears usually go for. are they around 1910.
|
I would guess 1915 to 1920 as far as age, and I think you made a good buy. I think value would be in the $250 to $350 range without a maker.
|
I would say that's much better than a "decent group of pennants" you have there Keith. I would be willing to wager that the Cincinnati pennant is a particularly scarce design. And the Dodgers pennant is a gem as well. That version always seem to bring a premium price. Really nice group. Great find!

Pennants
Thanks Brock,
I haven't seen the Cincinatti pennant before (not that I track Reds pennants that much), and didn't see it listed in Mike Egner's guide, so was hoping it could be a rarer one. |
I love it when I pick something up and it's even better than I thought...I won this 1958 Western League Register (basically a media guide). I had no idea until I got it that it belonged to the General Manager of the Lincoln team -Dick Wagner. Cincinnati fans may know who he was as he held that same position with the Big Red Machine of the 1970s. His name is on the front cover...can it be considered an autograph? As an aside Wagner was the youngest GM in the history of professional baseball..he was only 19 years old when he was GM of the Thomasville club of the Georgia-Florida League in 1947.

Regardless, it's just in the last year or so that advanced Ruth collectors have shown quite a bit of interest in Walsh estate memorabilia and photos (huge prices realized in Heretage's last auction), so your collection is extremely rare and if I was you, I'd sit on them and enjoy 'em. All good things, Jimmy |

Nice collection of pennants from the 40s and 50s. The Reds(legs) pennant is a pretty rare one made by Keezer Mfg., and might even be stamped as such on the back. Same goes for the Braves pennant in your batch. These are identifiable by their very thick tassels, two color print, and simple-yet-elegant designs. (The STL Browns pennant from this "series" is on my personal want list.)

Glendale Show/Long Beach Flea et al
http://sportsantiques.com/fantazdispenser.htm
Mike, I'm not a pin guy but that's a cool pin...I did a story on a Fan Taz syrup dispenser, see link above. At the end of the story is a Fan Taz sign, which has been on eBay a long time. In other news...here's some Jan P/U's....went to the Glendale Show and the Long Beach flea over the weekend...didn't find much....At Glendale got a dummy advertising loaf of Helms bread, stating Helms supplied bread to the Olympics....after leaving regretted getting it since it's one of those fragile pieces I hate...then the next day at the Long Beach flea I found a bottle of Canada Dry water, again advertising it as supplyed to the Olympics...then found a killer horserace plaque marked 1966....also got a cool little c1930's polo trophy on eBay 7 1/2" wide..given to a U.S. Ambasador <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=BreadWater.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/BreadWater.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=CarltonWIthPlaque.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/CarltonWIthPlaque.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=HosrseRacePlaque.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/HosrseRacePlaque.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/?action=view&current=PoloTrophy.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/PoloTrophy.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |

1931 WS Tickets and Press Pass

We had another snow storm in the midwest (KC), so no work today. I was able to make it down to the local antique mall where, to my suprise, I was able to pick up these three 1931 WS tickets and Press Pass for a great price. I was particularly excited about the Pass.

Amazin'
1 Attachment(s)
I collaborated on the pickup of an eBay lot that contained two pristine full tickets to the 1969 Miracle Mets 100th and final win of their Amazin' season that caught the entire sports world by surprise.
It's ironic that this game occured in Chicago. As many of you may remember, the Cubs had been a strong NL front runner until their legendary late season fade... One of my collecting focuses Nolan Ryan pitched in relief in this game and got his final K of the regular season. In 38 years of collecting I have never seen another full ticket to this game. I've always hoped I would find one, and now I have. Cool! :D |

Clint, great pickup on that bat. Congrats! I just got this in the mail today...Thanks to Andy Bower for sending this to me..he and his dad have really contributed a lot to my Lincoln Chiefs collection. This is a snapshot of Dick Stuart and Marcos Cobos in 1956...it is written on the back in Stuart's hand. |

I just got a Lou Brock 3000th hit ticket stub from my friend Scott Garner along with a great letter of provenance. Scott is a good friend and has been a mentor to me on ticket purchases. In fact, and I don't want to jinx it, he found something else that I'll be bidding on and hope to show in a few days.
Thanks Scott!! |
Not trying to be a party pooper, but how can you tell that ticket is from the correct game? I don't see any dating.

There was a clear bottom half to it, that held the candy (just like the Jackie Robinson version). You may want to try finding a Jackie Robinson with the clear base, and buy it cheap... then keep the base for your Wlliams Bust and sell the Jackie Robinson top half. Either way, congrats on another great acquisition! |
Earlybird shopping at a local antique show yielded this great 1910 team composite produced by Weasner of Buffalo. Image measures 12 1/2" x 16 1/4"; original frame is 17 5/8" x 21 5/8".
At least eight of the players made it to the T206 lineup; at least 14 made it to the majors at some point in their career. On August 9, 1910, pitcher Chet Carmichael (second from right in top row) pitched the first perfect game in Eastern League history. Sorry about the reflection/glare off the glass. http://s915.photobucket.com/albums/a...Photos/002.jpg |

Rick, Nice pick up on the Buffalo Composite photo....you just don't come across that kind of quaility at antique shows too often, congrats....actually there's a lot of nice p/u's on here...that Ted Williams Candy dispenser....how tall is that?
I picked up an interesting piece today at a flea...14" tall x 12 wide pillow advertising the 1985 heavyweight title fight between Larry Holmes and Michael Spinks in Las Vegas....never heard of one of these |
Carlton- The Williams bust measures about 4.5" tall. Which is about 1/2" bigger than the Robinson version.
Mark- I've been there before. That last second scramble to try and get a bid in can be nerve racking. Your post has me wondering if there are more, non-baseball, versions of these figural candy dispensers? Any idea? Maybe if he sees this, Lou C. can chime in because if anyone would know it would likely be him. |
I have some gold-toned busts (DiMaggio/Feller/Sain) that are very similar in style and size. I can post them if anyone cares.
But as far as the Candy dispenser type with the clear base, the only ones I have seen are the Jackie Robinson and the Ted Williams (with the Williams being 10 times rarer than Robinson). I am not aware of any others. Since this is right in his "wheelhouse", perhaps Lou will chime in and can enlighten us... I do also have a Jackie Robinson version, which is a bust only... the base is gold like the statue, but it does not pull apart like the Candy Container. I've always assumed it's a prototype of some kind. I can post that one as well (if anyone cares). Sometimes I think the number of people in the world who value this stuff is in the single-digits :o |
I would definitely be interested in seeing the pieces you mentioned Mark. The Robinson possible prototype piece certainly piqued my interest quite a bit. Would love to see that.
