I just received the catalog for Legendary's Live Auction at the National. I know they've had some problems in the past, but their lineup for this auction is very impressive.

As I'm away from my home on business travel, can anyone describe some of the highlights?

I'm surprised that this is not available online yet, if catalogs have already been distributed. Excited to see what they have either way-

I'm at work and don't remember everything, but a few that I remember are:
- Joe Jackson autograph
- 1924 Frankie Frisch overseas tour uniform
- 1935 and 1936 DiMaggio Zeenuts w/ coupon
- Peck & Snyder Red Stockings
- several Ruth balls
- Gehrig book signed / inscribed to his Mayo Clinic doctor
- big Temple Cup print

oh, and just about every rare Philadelphia Phillies card imaginable!

I couldn't find the auction online either, and I normally receive the print catalogue here in Vancouver the day after the auction ends.

Each year I have gone to the live auction and had absolutely no aspirations of bidding. Almost every year I end up winning something......(you know you are an addict when that happens)

I don't need complete sets of any of the cards listed. I might buy one card, but no chance in this auction.

Minor correction, but this is the only Speaker/Evers box known, not the only full box known.

Marc - the only Phillies item I recall was for some reason I think they had a silver bat from Mike Schmidt, but I could be completely wrong.

The 1910 Obak Display Album is incredible. The cards, other than being pasted neatly in to the appropriate spaces, appear NMT. If I weren't taking the lids and grandkids to Disney World I'd go strongly after it. I wonder if the winning bidder will carefully remove the cards and have the #1 set on the Registry or leave it alone. I hope he leaves it alone, this is a 1 of a kind item.

Since I don't have the catalog yet, I can only imagine the 1910 obak display album. If I recall correctly, the other album I saw had the "cards" printed as part of the album, and they weren't separate. Perhaps that is something different.

Hi Max! Nope, these are actual cards, not images of the cards. Absolutely gorgeous. 2 cards have shaken loose but the rest are all firmly mounted with back paste. If the paste is, and I believe it probably is, that flour based paste you see from the 1910's, they COULD be removed and despending on how neatly done, you would have an incredible set. I hope the winning bidder leaves them as is but I wouldn't blame him for being tempted.

If I recall, the catalog says $4,000-$5,000 estimate, but we know how close those estimates are. :D

If I had to guess I would say it will go for more than the high estimate.

Would someone kindly post some scans of this catalog?

Old Gold Ruth Sign
 

I just started reading The Card by Michael O'Keefe, and in the prologue, he mentions an Old Gold Babe Ruth sign being in Bill Mastro's collection. I have no idea if the one in Legendary's auction is the same one, if it was previously sold by Mastro and now reconsigned, etc.

Not trying to stir the pot; just pointing something out.

While Old Gold displays are certainly not common, it is not a unique item so odds are it isn't one from Mastro's collection.

I just got the catalog. There is some unbelievable stuff in there. Fortunately there is nothing I can't live without. That is also what I have said the last several years when I won a lot or two.... :(.

I would guess closer to 15k, but that is just a guess.

Joe- I've been asked if it is yours but I think this one is different. Doesn't the photo on yours go all the way to the bottom of the card? The one in the Legendary Auction has some blank space beneath the image. Also, I don't recall yours having that advertising on the back.

The photo on mine does not go all the way to the bottom of the card. It is just like the one in Legendary.

People weren't allowed to write a message on the back of the postcard at the time (it was for an address only) - - so I would guess that space was intended for a message to be written.

The postcard I have is postally used and has writing on the front.

I am pretty sure the back of mine is the same as the one in Legendary..... but I don't have a back scan handy (can't seem to find it on my computer). I plan on going to the bank soon, so I will check it out then.

$75 this year.......I went to the first one. It was a nice evening 3-4 years ago. Probably won't attend this year though.....some incredible stuff in the auction though.

Wow! The price for the T-207 set, #2 on the PSA Registry, was an absolute steal. I was shocked. :eek:

Bob- I was looking at that price also but the set is really not that high grade. The majority of cards are VG or less. But it still went cheap.

Bob, I'm stunned at the low price on the T207 set as well as many others. Also, 15% of the lots didn't even get bids or reach the reserve.

I also thought the Peck & Synder card would go higher than it did.

I was there. Legendary ran a great auction at an exceptional venue. Some lots went a little low, but most did fine. This company appears to be doing extremely well. I was also at Heritage the prior day which appeared to have many more lots not meet what were in some cases unrealistically high reserves.
BTW, the Peck and Snyder in Legendary was heavily stained and the printing was faded. How SGC gave it a 40 I will never know. The realization on it reflected its condition, not its grade.

Judging by all the folks hanging around Legendary's booth at the National, I think it's safe to say more big things lie ahead for this company.

I appreciate everyones participation in what we judged to be a successful event!

Although the Science Center was a last minute replacement for the ESPN zone I think everyone agreed it was perfect especially with the rooftop view of the Inner Harbor on what turned out to be a mild night.

Our crowd stretched beyond our limit of 175 people but everyone seemed to have a good time.

The highlight of the night was Brooks Robinson who is a gracious ambassador for the game.

The highlight for me was hanging out for 3 hours after the event with a hobby pioneer who was outbid at $25k for the Hage's dairy collection. I asked him if $150 a card was too rich he said he only needed 12 of the cards so it was really $2k a card!

I truly appreciate the support at the show from the many Network 54 members that stopped by the booth and showed up at the event. Look forward to something special as we move to our home town next year. After the success of this event we already have a number of great items committed for next year.

I, for one, was disappointed that they started the auction early. The literature said it was to start at 8:30. Additionally, three people from Legendary said it was to start at 8:30. Upon arriving at 8:23, we discovered they were already closing Lot #5. Others arrived at a similar time (before the scheduled start time). Potential bids were lost by starting early.

All in all, though, the venue was nice and set up better and much more comfortable than the one the night before. Some head scratchers both high and low, but that is typical for most auctions. I enjoyed myself at both of the live auctions.

Thought $8400 was a great price for the Falk Giants postcard. Speaking of which, another surfaced at the show and some very lucky person got it for only $1500!

That was actually Joe D's card; he spotted a trove of Taddy cards and needed cash quickly.

The one at the show that you mentioned selling for $1,500 was at the Sporting News photo booth and I don't believe it was an original RPPC as the other one was but instead I believe it was a photo of the original postacrd on a postcard-back. I had the opportunity to buy it for $1,500 the first night but passed because of that reason as well as not really needing it for my collection's current focus.

For me the highlight of the evening was trading old hobby war stories with said pioneer after he was out bid on the Hage's lot -0--

What a great venue for the event and although I don't bid on anything -- just hanging out and seeing what is going on is a treat in itself.
