Robert Edwards Auction
Once again, the world's most impressive baseball memorabilia auction was a gathering ground for the hobby's premiere collectors. REA brings out the
competitive fire inside all of us. It was truly a fun event. Unfortunately, we were not not very lucky last evening. We only won one lot, despite aggressively bidding on 16 lots. We were surprised that the Tattoo Orbit advertising piece doubled an guesstimate that Rob shared with us, and truly stunned by the $18,000 price tag for the Buffalo Fed League pennant. To the best of our knowledge that is 6x more than a Fed League pennant had ever sold for. Looking forward to hearing who won what. Our single win was the Landis-Cobb photo. http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...x?itemid=14536 Best, Bruce Dorskind America's Toughest Want List |

I thought, once again, that some stuff went cheap like the t208s and some was in outerspace like the Boston store Ruth and the Drum Johnson both in the $30k range. |
I thought the T210 Jackson @ $95,000 and T210 Stengel @ $20,000 were about right but I was stunned by the $18,000 for the 1914 Buffalo Federal League pennant . I thought my early bid on that item was excessive -boy was I wrong !
|
Got outbid for a lot I really wanted at 3 AM....while the auction says it is not geared towards people who can stay up the latest, it sure seems like it is....
|
I struck out unfortunately.
I hope a board member picked up the Jimmy Collins cabinet. I would've loved to have picked up that lot and the Fatima premium. I'm looking forward to hearing how everyone else fared. |
Let's see your 2010 REA winnings!

I went 1 for 3, here is my only winning.
How did everyone else do? |
I agree

I agree with you Bill. I thought the SGC 40 Plank at $50,000 w/o the BP went a little cheap. Just my opinion. Tony |
General trend in cards?
I only track T202s and I definitely noticed a softer market in T202 singles than in past auctions. REA normally beats the "book" price by a wide margin, but that wasn't the case this time around. Did anybody notice that trend on any other of the popular sets?
Take Care, Geno |
My biggest priority was the Sol White cabinet card but $17.5 was out of my price range........
|
Nice pickup Tony.....

The Plow's Candy Collins was the only thing I really wanted and it went a few thousand more then I wanted to go. I couldn't justify paying the condition premium.

Guys, I went ahead and merged the two "REA pickup threads" into one thread for us.....
For myself, I won three things either alone or with teams. Both e103 lots will be headed my way and I also won a large stake in the massive e93 lot - the one with 81 cards, 44 HOFers and 5 Wagners.... |
My First Judge
This is my first Old Judge! I have a crazy goal of getting just one card from each HOFer in this set. This may never happen due to how expensive that would be, but to try will be fun.

I hope my invoice is wrong , it states $ 1000.00 shipping for 2 small items I won. MUst be a mistake.

I know Rob gave fair warning about the possibility of the auction closing anytime after 11PM EST but bids were coming in at 100 every 18 to 20 minutes for a few hours before the Rob shut it down. And if you look at the Recent Bids you see several big ticket items being in play several minutes prior to it closing. I know the guy has to sleep but seemed premature based on what I could see. Only 5 minutes had passed without a bid.

Happy to have "purchased" my first choice out of some 16 cards I bid on.

Is it just me or did others half expect the bidding to still be taking place by time they woke up this morning? :p
I think I did OK. Had several bids in and was happy to walk away with these |
Jeff, I have a feeling I was up against you last night on one of your winnings.
Would one of them be senior Chase?? It was a beauty!!! |
The M110? Yes, that was me.
|
Great pick up. Will fit your collection nicely!

Thank goodness someone else got a $1000 S/H charge. I saw this on my invoice after I won one lot last night, and I was going to have a meltdown if this was the charge. (I didn't win the Jeep either. :) ) |
My shipping shows a "Grand" to. I wouldn't sweat it. It will be corrected.

Fat City
Won the three items I really wanted plus one of the '53 Topps artwork cards. Also partnered successfully on a lot which I am not at liberty to divulge yet. In general I was pleasantly surprised that the bidding, at least on my cards, wasn't as ferocious as I feared it might be. The M110 Cobb, une pièce de résistance without the resistance, just the way I like 'em, is the same card for which I battled and lost two years ago and which came a whole lot cheaper this time. Likewise I wondered why an N173, with Roger Connor on it no less, had zero activity in OT. Too much nice stuff in one auction? Too many strapped collectors in this economy? Don't know but for some of us, me included, last night at REA was Fat City.

Amazing David - 3 of my favorites in the entire auction!
|
I know a lot of folks comment that REA can be a relatively expensive place to buy - and there are certainly plenty of lots that demonstrate that.
But did anyone note any "bargains" in REA this time? From my perspective, the lots added at the end (they were not in the print catalog) were fertile hunting ground. This included some nice mid-grade Dockmans. My theory is that these got overlooked by bidders (the Dockmans that were illustrated in the catalog got strong prices - the Wagner throwing, SGC 40, went well over VCP). A late consignor put in a horde of E-cards...including several lots of Dockmans. I know Dockmans are not "rare" cards, but many of these late-added lots went for quite a bit under VCP. A couple of these lots would have been great dealer break lots. Also (on the subject of the flip), I bought the high grade '39 Moe Berg for $500+juice this time - this is the exact card that REA sold one year ago for $700+juice (a fact that was noted in the write-up). Cheers, Blair |
I thought the d380 Joss was a good buy, thought about another bid at the end but didn't pull the trigger. I'm sure I'll regret that.
Also thought the 1891 Conly Studio cabinets went cheap. On the other end, this for $9400 is crazy... http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...em_13623_1.jpg Someone really overpaid for the e107 Keeler too. |

Rea lot 260
|
Hi Scott,
I think I know exactly which one you won. Would the first name be Honus and the last Wagner?? ;) And no, not the T206......:D |
Lost out on both lots I wanted: The 1869 Red Stocking CDV ($11,750) and the Wheeling Imperial cabinet with Sol White ($17,625), both with juice.
Yeah Phil, I figured you'd be after the Wheeling cabinet! Sorry you didn't get it. I was also surprised how high it went. |
I picked up lot #44--Nice N172 Louisville Wolf and uncatalogued 1890 "NL" version of Mullane kinda hidden in there (amongst some other stuff).

Wow Jeff. I didn't notice that that Ruth had gone for that much. You're right. It seems crazy even considering that the card appears from the scan to be a great candidate for a grade bump.
J |
That Ruth #53 only makes sense if you can have a wrinkle removed, resubmit and voila a 7 or 8 appears on the flip
|
That Ruth was a card that Peter S was after; that explains the high price. :)
|
Wow!
Amazing how thw the words "cheap" and "deal" are used for single cards that cost more than my first house! Don't let the media know about the prices realized in this auction or the "recession" will be officially over. I never new there were so many multi-millionaires in this hobby, I can't even afford the buyer's premium on 99% of these items.:(
Congrats to all the winners & enjoy! |
I took the plunge into T205's with this card.
Its funny, before this auction I admired the T205's, but never felt compelled to buy one. But for some reason this card came a callin'... Now I'm thinking a T205 HOF set might be in order. http://i672.photobucket.com/albums/v...g?t=1272825272 |

David, those are incredible pickups. It's uncanny, but in every auction we seem to have almost the identical taste in cards.
And PS, my birthday is next month. My favorite color is M110. |
So you liked the Wilmer Mizell, huh?
Jeff: A recurring nightmare I have is that I will finally go off my nut and murder one of the rectal orifices in my life, you will fly out to Honolulu to defend me but that it will cost me the '14 CJ Matty, the signed '34 Goudey Gehrig and the D304 Cobb. And that would just be your retainer.
http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...em_13962_1.jpg |
Hi David,
Adam is closer than Jeff.... And he doesn't have the same Cobb fetish .... So most of your cards of safe, except maybe the boxers.... Be well Brian PS Serenity now..... |
Red Hindu
if you won the red Hindus in REA-I would be interested in the Doc Crandall.:D

[QUOTE=calvindog;804323]David, those are incredible pickups. It's uncanny, but in every auction we seem to have almost the identical taste in cards.
+1 Great pickups David. Love the Cobb, and Kelly. I think you got the Connor for a steal especially compared to the Keefe |
Someone got a terrific deal on the E94 Speaker with Bloom overprinted back. I thought I had it for a steal but alas. Congrats to whomever won it. If the winner of the large T210 lot is thinking of breaking it up, please let me know and I might be able to help up recoup some of your investment on Series 3,5 and 6 cards.

As far as wins I didn't even win the 2 lots I wanted. Might have to do with the extremely low price my card sold for. As a matter a fact I was told by REA that they always got the best prices because they have buyers that wait all year to buy. Just my luck I declined a $9800 offer for it on Ebay to sell it for $5000 on REA because they are the best. Hell I would give 25% of what it sold for just to get it back. Oh well I guess I learned my lesson that if you want to lose money on a card consign it to an auction house so massive that even some of the better cards in the hobby are pushed to the back and shadowed by the monsters:eek:
|
I agree Jeff!
The E107 Keeler is a sweet card, but 22K+ I couldn't believe!!

What is the story behind the PSA 6 T210 Casey Stengel card?
In the October 2009 Heritage auction, the Stengel sold for $48,995. http://sports.ha.com/common/view_ite...=81006&src=pr# Last night in REA, the very same Stengel sold for $23,500. http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...x?itemid=13257 Looks like the winner got a very good deal last night on the Stengel, but the consignor lost more than half his money in six months. |

That really sucks about your card Andrew. My opinion on REA's auction is that there were so many lots and because it's only a once a year gig.....some cards get overshadowed. That T210 Stengel card's price was way low in my opinion. the buyer of that card got a true deal. I also think the buyer of the two large N172 lots got good deals there too. I wonder how many bidders participated this time around ?
|
Matt and Tony,
Congrats to everyone who won something. It was a good night for me. I won the e90-1 Wagner PSA 4 and the Hoy. They were my #1 and #2 hopes. If the person who won the ER Williams game wants to deal the Hoy, please let me know. And the quest continues. Scott (ubiqty) |
T206's - Wow !
Major HOF'ers T206 in PSA 5 & 6 had some very high final prices.
with buyers premium: Cobb - red PSA 5 - $3,525. ............way over SMR Cobb - bat on PSA 5 - $3,525. ...........over SMR W.Johnson - hands chest PSA 5 - 1,880. .........over SMR Cobb - green PSA 5 - $6,462. ............way over SMR Cobb - green PSA 6 - $14,100. ...........way over SMR Matty - portrait PSA 6 - $3,525. Cy Young - portrait PSA 5 - $3,819. ........super way much over SMR Matty - dark cap PSA 6 - $3,525. ..........way over SMR Three weeks ago I had listed on ebay a T206 Cobb green PSA 5 (outstanding centering) listed for $5,200. - nobody bought - scratch head - then this Cobb green PSA 5 goes for nearly $6,500. hmmm. And that Cy Young portrait PSA 5 at over $3,800. - WOW !!! steve |
Unfortunately lost out on the T204 lot of 24 with a low grade Johnson.
Would've put a big dent in my set. Maybe next time. Nice auction. |
I was absolutely thrilled to win lot #1150 - the 1867 Bernards Base Ball Club of Basking Ridge, NJ Scorebook.
It's an absolutely amazing look into the history of baseball in New Jersey, IMO, and an incredible piece that's traveled more than a century through the State's baseball culture, includes game scores from 1867 through 1980, a number of great autographs, and a bunch of news clippings that chronicle the journey that this book has taken throughout the years. Given the Elysian Fields game happened in 1846 and this book is from 1867, I can't imagine that there are many surviving pieces of NJ baseball memorabilia that are older than this one. Best part: I won it for the opening bid. http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...em_14267_1.jpg -Al |
I didn't bid, so nothing to show. Although I have been given the opportunity to go through a few lots that were won by a dealer/acquaintance.
Nice pickup on the Cobb/Landis photo Bruce. By the way.....welcome back. Jantz |
Hi Rob,
I was thinking the same thing on the 23 t204s. I ended up being the underbidder on that one so I could focus on the e103s. Nice group, someone got a pretty good deal there.... |
