These books were given to soldiers being deployed to Germany. I just started to read it and it is very interesting. Great read.:D

Jimmy- great Beatles packet. You can tell that photo is from 1963 by the collarless jackets, which they wore only during the summer and fall of 1963. By the time they played the Royal Variety Performance on November 4, 1963, they were back to wearing collars again.

Wow Greg....
Congrats are definitely in order for that one. A holy Grail piece! The one currently in REA is not nearly as nice as yours. May I ask how/where you acquired it? A magnificent acquisition... |
That's an incredible example of the game Greg. Wow.

Was happy to pick this up... another toughie to find in nice condition!

This is the one I had before:
http://www.huntauctions.com/online/i...=374&lot_qual= It was restored and I paid (well you can see what I paid from Hunt's) and I consigned it to Bill Mastro a few years back and said I would wait for a "nicer" exemplar. Well, after what I paid, it "sold" in Mastro's for ~$1100, and I netted close to $900 after commission, etc. So, one day I am perusing the boards here and, lo and behold, Dr. Mark Cooper, noted baseball game expert (of whom I have had his book for years) and he helped me acquire this magnificent specimen. He is the best. |

Picked up a couple of Original Type I photos of Shea Stadium. One from the 60's and the other one from Game 1 of the '86 World Series.
I have lots of memories going to Shea Stadium. Now that it is gone, I don't know what to think. Citi Field seems like a whole different venue. Sure Shea had its problems, however, I'm glad I was able to get the pair, gives me a smile from the good ol' days. |
Nice pick ups Anthony.

Jimmy, I must say that I've known a lot of collectors over the years, but you are by far the most "on top of things" as far as your collection is concerned. I've never seen anyone that can find these companion pieces as well as you. Nice pick up.

Name change
Jimmy,
I still think you should change your name to the"kingofcompanionpieces" There is no doubt who "the man" is on collecting items together that relate to each other. Great Gehrig pic BTW, but not my favorite. Mark |

1989 Guernsey's Topps Auction Catalog
3 Attachment(s)
Picked up this catalog to go with my two TYPE I photos that I acquired from the TOPPS Vault that were used to make Whitey's 1962 card, and a vintage signed card.
Now if I could only find those other two photos... Attachment 18324Attachment 18325 Attachment 18326 |
pick ups
Jimmy,
Dont forget you now need these 2 pins that were also the same pics as the Jimmy Fund pieces. The one on the right was a repro pin made in the early 80s and the one on the left is period from the 50s. The way you can tell is the name band on the repro extends more past the shoulder and is a little longer.Just another useless fact some of us crazy pin people know:eek::eek: |

My first vintage real photo autograph!
I picked up a 2.5"x3.5" real photo (looks to be 1950s?) of Larry Doyle (of T206 fame), autographed on the back in ink and inscribed "To my friend Edward, Best Wishes, Larry Doyle" and in pencil is written NY Giants 1907-1920. Its authenticated by JSA. I just thought it was a neat piece and decided I had to have it! When I figure out what the heck is wrong with my scanner, I will post pics.
|
A study in patience
I've been watching this on ebay for about a year at a $299BIN.
They finally put up for auction and I won it for much less. Great book in excellent condition. My scanner isn't big enough to get the whole book. Now I feel like Yoda. "If you wait, come to you it will!" June 1928 Strength Magazine http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ngthMagLou.jpg |

This 1964 Koufax patch companion piece took me a few years to acquire, but it was certainly worth the wait. The TYPE I photo is by the legendary lensman William Jacobellis, and his work is very tough to come by.

Koufax patch companion piece
Hey Jimmy,
What a cool companion piece for a GREAT photo of Koufax that I've never seen. Where do you come up with some of these items? Do you know what year the photo was taken and what year the patch was produced. VERY, VERY NICE! Good job! |
Not to be a buzz kill, but are you sure that the photo is the same one used on the patch? The scans make it seem that the placement of the glove and the position of Koufax's left hand are different in the two images. Even the expression on his face seems a little different. I'm probably wrong; just wanted to throw it out there.

Good eye Rob! However it's a good thing I'm not that anal about stuff like that. Here is a TYPE I photo of Gehrig and Ott and the companion piece "Famous Sluggers" booklet. Once again, not a perfect match, but once displayed together, that pretty much doesn't matter. Attachment 18649Attachment 18650 |
Where do you find this stuff Jimmy? I agree though, you can't be too anal about some of this or it will drive you mad.
|
Yep, neat stuff, but those are different Koufax photos...
the length of sleeves are the proof

Plus, how his glove is positioned differently against his right leg Plus, the different background scene, seen between his legs... Lots of subtle differences, but it's still a wonderful companion piece (taken by the same photographer during the same photo shoot). That is the first patch of that type I have ever seen... and still in its original packaging, no less. Has to be insanely rare... another amazing tie-in by Jimmy! |

Ben, that really is a great Burke photo of 'ol Diz. Just so everyone knows, I went to Ben for his expertise on Type1 photos, specifically regarding the Dizzy
Dean, and although he wanted to add it to his collection, he was willing to back off and not compete with me to purchase it. It wasn't until I contacted him to say I wouldn't be bidding due to some great autograph opportunities that had presented themselves, that he decided to bid. Thanks Ben for sharing your knowledge and your friendship! Also thanks to Mark, Jimmy, Scott, Jodi, and all the other members of this great board that have helped not only with my collecting, but that have helped provide a great place to shelter myself from a very hectic job. You guys are what's good about this hobby! Now, I was able to pick up a couple of minor Burke's for a price a just couldn't resist. |
Geez,
It's becoming quite the Burke thread. Nice pick ups all! And Mike, glad I could be of assistance providing you with shelter for your addiction. If you want to show your appreciation, that Henrich signed Sport mag you have would be a fine token of your gratitude.:D Mark |

Well....I think this shot is fantastic and worth every penny and then some.

Nice Pickup Mark! I'd been tracking that Bottomley for several days and woke up confident that I'd pick it up...that is until Mark kept me preoccupied with a purchase/trade that pretty much took me out of the bidding. I'll have to remember that trick:D I'm real happy with our deal though Mark!!
|
Love that baseball game Greg... congrats!!!!
|
Shock and Awe!
Mike,
That was my strategy all along. It's a two pronged approach. 1)Offer you something you couldn't pass up so you would not bid. Even though, I didn't know you wanted the Bottomley, it still works keeping you from bidding on anything : ) 2)Get you to send me the money you would've spent, so I can spend it. The items will be coming your way shortly. I hope you enjoy them. Best, Mark |
Winning the hearts and minds
3 Attachment(s)
Ah, the 'ol two pronged approach...that's the second time I've fallen for that this month! I swear, I've filled more holes in my collection in the last week then I had all last year.
Anyway, here's the deal....Mark gets to fill a hole in his signed Sports Mag collection by getting my Tommy Henrich and some cash considerations, and I get a 1925 TSN record book and a Mantle/Berra Sport Mag (signed by Mantle), which I will be sending away shortly after receiving it to Yogi to sign. Life is good!! |
Mike,
Man it's been a busy couple of weeks for me too. Glad I could help fuel your addiction. Mark |
Here's the other major piece that plugged an enormous hole in my 1934 Cardinals team project...Red Worthington. I've only seen two of these, and I was very fortunate to find that Jodi Birkholm had one available.
That leaves only two autographs to have every player, coach and GM for that team...and one will be picked up later this week, and the other next month |

Haven't posted any new pickups in a while, so here goes...
1. Comical Italian Baseball Figural Players (idiotic looking but also endearing, and impossible to find in this MINT Condition) 2. Johnny Bench 1970 Lithograph by LeRoy Neiman 3. Baseball Player Original Sculpture by celebrated Mexican artist Manuel Felguerez 4. Golfer Original Sculpture by Felguerez 5. 1940 Cincinnati Reds Jacket worn by either Jimmy Wilson or Hank Gowdy (both wore #2 during that time frame) |
5 Attachment(s)
Also wanted to post this beautiful piece from REA. I kept the Athletics Sign for myself, but wanted to post pics of this Giants Sign before having to part with it (it has been sold to a fellow Net54 Member...)
This Giants Ad Sign features some amazing Carl Horner Portraits, including Matty. McGraw, Marquard, Snodgrass, Merkle and Meyers. Great D&M Lucky Dog Mascot and long-forgotten team logos as well... |
Great pickups Mark! The Reds jacket is killer and you're not kidding about those Italian figures being impossible to find in that kind of condition. Those things are normally wrecked! I've never seen any near the pristine condition of yours.

In the spirit of Jimmy's magnificent tie-in pieces, here is a neat little item I was thrilled to find... a newspaper ad from 1909, featuring this very game. Not many of these survived, but it looks like they did promote it pretty well a century or so ago...

This just about completes my busy month and my 1934 Gas House Gang project. Another hard to find autograph...Jim Winford. Would have preferred a nice 3x5 but I'm afraid beggers can't be choosers on this one. May upgrade later but for now I have only one person left out of 34 for this project...Branch Rickey, and he's a fairly easy one.
