I am YOUNG at heart- collector's age poll
So with the great thread about who will be buying our stuff in 20 yrs I thought this would be a very timely poll. First of all I am 48 and hope I AM the one still buying in 20 yrs. So, lets see how old our members are.....
|
54 according to my birth certificate.
74 according to how I felt when I got out of bed this morning. 14 according to my wife's Behavioral Age Index. |
Can you vote for more than one category?....I'm 57.:)
|
I guess
I should be thankful that you posted this poll now, since in a little over a week I move to a new age group. It should also be noted that my IQ is still higher than my age, although that too may change one day.
|
That 41 to 50 demographic seems to be pretty dominant so far. I'm 47 but I will say that I got carded yesterday to buy a can of chew.
|
I am 63 and hope my first Grandson (3 Granddaughters) who is on his way next month will be a collector. Found the post on getting sons interested in collecting very interesting. Great post Leon. D.

I'm 47.
|
39 and have been collecting since 1978 but still learn something new about the hobby everyday.

I am 51 but 29 at heart!:D:D

I'm a youngster. 23 years old.

48 and chasing women half my age and cards twice my age!

I'm still a youngster
27 years old....
Ken, I like the anaolgy you uses! Tony |
Just turned 39 this month, and plan on collecting pre-war cards until the end-hopefully that's later than sooner..................:D
|
I'm 32 years old and hope to be around for the next 20 years.

I'm 34

Seeing as how this is a pre-war forum, and pre-war cards are, generally speaking, somewhat costly, I'd be interested to know how closely the developing curve above correlates to a general US wealth by age distribution. It may simply be a case that most pre-war collectors are in their 50s because that's when people, on average, earn the most. If that's true then such a poll in, say, the CU forum, might have a greater distribution in the younger ages where the majority of cards are not as expensive.

I agree completely (I'll be 48 later this year) :p Steve |
very valid observation

That is a very valid observation. I would have to guess the CU forum or the Beckett forum would have a younger age demographic, overall. But, this is about who is going to buy OUR cards....and this IS a pre-war forum. I would like to see this poll on either of those 2 boards. I am quite sure it would be far different numbers and a much younger general age. Just my opinion.... |
66
|
I am 19.
|
Half the board is between 41 and 60. That's a little older than I would have predicted.

I'd venture that had you taken this exact poll 20 years ago, in 1990, the distribution would be similar, with very few 20 year olds collecting pre-war, but we seem to be doing OK now as many have moved over from the modern topps cards they collected as children. |
I am now 65 and this is my 30th year in the hobby. This is a great hobby and I am looking forward to many more years in it. Frank

I am YOUNG at heart- collector's age poll
I just turned 34, and will enjoy collecting and selling for years to come

Turned 46 yesterday....seems like there are more in our late 40's by a mile!

Considering I am 33, I would get into some serious trouble with the first half of that statement. But it made me think of a movie scene quoted many, many times.... Or what was said, "That's what I love about these high school girls, man: I get older, they stay the same age." - WOODERSON (Matthew McConaughey) in Dazed and Confused (1993) |

interesting point, ole buddy, but do note that you and I, and a couple of others, are about to topple off the far range of that 'continuum'.:) best, barry |
I know Barry, I find it a little hard to believe that in a couple of years I will turn 60. How can that be?:(

Jon,
See post #17. |
Looking closely at the pole it appears that the 31-40 and 41-50 range are close. Overall (up to this point) the 31-50 range is at 60%.

Fred, Check your math. It's almost 65% :) |

42, though I read at a 44 year-old level.
I'm also starting to appreciate why Jack Benny stayed 39. |
42 now
I agree that this demographic will tend to be older than the collection of posters at CU or Beckett. In my case I "graduated" from 50's-60's Topps when I finished up that run and began my pre-war collection with some aggressive intent only recently. Affordability figures into the equation.
Quick question for Leon, How many votes to the Bruceii get in the poll? |

Re: I am YOUNG at heart- collector's age poll
I'm 41 and starting to feel it. Starting to wear glasses
a little bit more now. Just found out I'm going to be needing surgery and yes, I'm going bald. Getting old sucks!! |

I am 35 and was just looking at my first steal. I pulled an '84 Mattingly rookie out of a wax pack at the Little League ball diamond. It is slabbed now...gum stain and all. That is where it started. Now I am looking for a Walter Johnson portrait. I think he played a bit before Donnie Baseball.
|
I'm 51 and have been collecting vintage since 1989 and switched from cards to photographs/memorabilia almost ten years ago.
|
I'm 49 and have collected non-stop since I bought a pack of 1968 Topps for a nickel.
|
49 for me. I remember collecting 66 Topps and I kept them all in a little red suitcase that 3 years later was decorated with the 69 decals. Boy did I not keep them in good shape when I was a kid. Loved them too much and it showed :)
|
I'm 29 - I just got back into the hobby after many years away.

47
Lots of us in the 41-50 age group...and many near the top of that group.
I'm 47 now but will turn 48 in September. I've got 22 years in pre-war, 40 years in baseball cards. Getting bald, grey haired and less energetic. Yes, I'm growing up! |
i'm...
I'M 21 and i hope im still collecting a long time from now unless im broke!

age
If someone would kindly cut me in half and count the rings I'll know my true age.
This old oak has pretty much whittled down collecting these days. |
Im 15 and started collecting around 2nd grade. Plan on continuing collecting for a long time to come.
|
52 and still enjoy collecting cards. Ken's early post would really get me in trouble with my better half!!
RC |
I've met your wife. You sure you want to stick to that "half" thing?
I was thinking it was more of a 70/30 split! (How's your season going?) |
Jim - you're absolutely right about that, it's probably closer to 90/10 if I were to be totally honest.
Season-wise, we're getting better.....a team that beat us by 61 (yes, that's not a typo) a month ago beat us by 25 Thursday and we were only down 12 at the end of 3, so we're getting more competitive with teams. I have great kids and they are playing hard and still learning. Plus, we won our first game last Saturday. Thanks for asking. RC |

You're right Fred, we have an equal split at the moment. I re-racked the results into equal bars of 10 years each. I'm sure most of the 31-40 and 41-50 groups will continue collecting for the next 10-20 years, sliding to the right as time passes. It will be interesting to see how the 31-40 age group looks in ten years. Will the current twenty-somethings grow in numbers to allow the 31-40 age group retain its share or will the average age grow as time passes? Hopefully the former coupled with growth to give the hobby we enjoy stability (price & value wise).
And for the record, 36 years here. |
