Happy New Year, everyone!

Saw Jimmy's recent post. I think I read recently where Marshall Fogel spoke about collecting "horizontally". Spreading your interests, so to speak. It's hard to focus on that very one thing, when there are so MANY great options to choose from - pennants, print material, photographs, pins, etc.

For me, it's the early Yankees and a fascination with the Deadball Era. These were tough to pass up.

Jacksons. I do believe you were referring to this post...

You know, come to think of it...
most items in my collection I found while searching in a much more broader fashion. I just don't really use specific terms when searching for stuff. I know it sounds pretty goofy and if you're married I certainly don't endorse it, but it has served me well over the years, although it can be VERY time consuming.

Same with catalogs. I will go through them over and over until something catches my eye.

I write this cause I think this is a great thread and when I started to think about what is tops of my want list for the coming year now that I got the '51 Bobby Thomson Ticket Stub... I really couldn't come up with anything specifically.

So...anyone else collect in this fashion or am I the lone nut-job here?

First off Jacksons. The items you posted are flat out tremendous! Absolutely superlative.

Regarding collecting themes, I tried about nine or ten years ago to put together a set. Now, one of my strengths as a man is I know what my weaknesses are. So I set out to putting together a 1968 Topps Baseball Card Game in high grade. I think it's only 33 cards that are not that tough to find in high grade although they do have some centering issues.

Anyway, after acquiring about half the set, I was bored out of my mind. Let me say that I have tremendous respect for all of you set builders out there. I admire your patience and determination. But I'm just not cut out for it.

Once I realized I could buy vintage photos of Babe & Lou for a small fraction of the price that their cards were fetching, I sold all of my card collection, about a hundred PSA 9 HOF players from the late fifties, the sixties and early seventies, and then started to focus almost entirely on vintage photos.

About that time a mutual friend had introduced me to Marshall as he knew Marshall was very passionate about photos and it didn't take long until I was completely emersed into collecting vintage photographs. One of the best tips Marshall ever gave me was to always keep an open mind when collecting.

Marshall is a real gem and very unique in his approach to collecting. First off, he put together the finest card collection in the hobby, which since has been bettered, and all the while he was also collecting pins, photos, advertising pieces, the finest game used bat collection extant, signed balls, pennants, game used uniforms and gloves, and some of the most fantastic odds & ends you'll ever see. And all the while never compromising quality.

So under his guidance, I started putting my collection together, with a decent but limited budget. For me, I love the fact that there will never be an end to what I collect, but my main focus is adding companion pieces for my photographs. This by far gives me the greatest pleasure.

There is something to be said for collecting things that can't be found in a monthly or even yearly price guide.

What Marshall taught me was the most simple lesson in the hobby... "Collect what you like in the best condition possible." Still the best advise you can ever get.

So Happy Collecting to all of my fellow board members and stick to your guns, no matter what others may say. I hope everyone gets the pleasure I get from collecting and also, the thrill of the hunt.

Sincerely, Jimmy

Thanks for the compliment. But the regular-season scorecard cover is generic--there's no way of telling the game, or even the team played from the cover alone.

jacksons 01-05-2010 10:13 AM

Thanks Jimmy...

Jimmy - well said. Thanks for your insight and input, as always.

I have many more items to share - I unfortunately have most of them already framed and matted archivally, hanging on walls in a dark room of my home.
My plan is to try scanning many of them through the UV glass - hopefully I can pull that off - we'll see. The material shared here on this board is tremendous - I would love to contribute more.

Always appreciate the quality of your posts, as well as the quality of your collection.

David - sorry - meant mine was from an April game against Boston. Noted in pencil on the inside...

McGraw's refusal to participate in a "World's Series" in 1904 led the Giants scrambling to appease frustrated fans.

This "Old Timer's Day" game against the 1889 squad was their solution.

Now that is one beautiful--and rare--piece!

Kawika 01-05-2010 02:38 PM

When I purchased the Falk photo the auction description said "circa 1905" and on the back in period ink was written "1905". Board members have written me asking when the picture was dated to and my answer was 1905. This fantastic poster nails it down better. Same with the McGraw roto. It's difficult to read but does it say "Photos by Falk" underneath McGraw?

fielded teams in 2 of the 3 major leagues, the American Assn. and the Union Assn. As the summer progressed, the AA team did much worse than the UA team and lost much of its fan support. The AA team's manager was fired after the August 1st home game against the NY Metropolitans (with HOFer Tim Keefe). Following a 6 - 5 loss to the NYMs on August 2nd, the Wash. AA team was disbanded (their final record for 1884 being 12 wins and 51 losses). Below are (1) a scored score card for the final 8/2/1884 game (Keefe played center field), upon which the fan wrote in the margin "Washington Club disbanded after this game," and (2) A Wash. AA 1884 schedule upon which presumably the same fan wrote "disbanded this date" right next to the August 2nd date. Sorry my pics don't do these pieces justice - I don't have a scanner and I am lousy with a camera!

Great programs, Jerrys.

That'll certainly close the book on David's question on when those Falk photos were taken.

jacksons 01-07-2010 09:49 AM

Sorry - one more comment on Jerrys programs (and my 1904 Old Timers program).

I'm always amazed when I see Mathewson's last name spelled incorrectly.

In fact, on the 1904 program, his name is spelled as Christie Matthewson. Doubly wrong.

This is also the case in my Sporting Life schedules.

I can understand a misrepresentation of "Tesreau", for example, but Christy's name was everywhere - how could it go to print like that and not be edited beforehand?

Maybe someone out there has the answer?

Hmm. I posted it here before, but I see that I used the ebay auction listing, which has now been removed. I'll have to take another photo of it. It's quite large--I would think about 24 x 30 or bigger.

On the ebay listing, the artist was described as "Heyendecker", so perhaps the poster did not find its true ending price (at least by my snipe)

By the way, this photo was on ebay about a week ago, and while I didn't win it, I thought I would share. It is a circa 1910 Cornell dorm shot, and you can see a different Leyendecker poster hanging in the background.

Hey man, any show with Vanessa Marcil would have me glued to the chair. Oh wait, she was on 'General Hospital'. And why do I know that???

!!

I gotta say though, there's something about the wartime programs that I absolutely love, especially from the 1942 Fall Classic. And that's even though the 'kid' in the illustration looks like a dwarf to me (look at the knees!!). Either way, very Rockwellian. And that's never a bad thing.

Here is a 1905 Boston schedule for two teams. Amazing how this little pocket sized item is put together in such great detail! Not something I readily collect-- but just an all around great baseball collectible.

This is my first post on the board...not a collector, but just a childhood treasure..

Of course, it's Canadian, so that might not be of too much interest to many of you!;)

Kodi, you are not the only Canadian on the boards. We're EVERYWHERE! Cool program BTW!

Amazing collections here. Especially the old Beantown stuff.

Nice program, Max!

Did you notice how detailed the times etc. are on the piece? We take great care to make things easy for people, (besides always being polite!). :D

Torn inner page... Gonna need a clever idea for a gentle fix.

Here are my only two programs. I 'personally' did the work getting the autographs on the Blue Jays spring training program when I was 14 vacationing in Florida in '91.
