Kansas City A's

My odds and ends centers around the KC A's of the late 50's and early 60's.
These are in my possession only because I married a KC girl with 3 older Brothers and a Dad who were passionate for this team. I also have pencils, Programs etc. Some cool stuff including the article on the trades between the A's and the Yanks of the late 50's. The running joke was KC was a farm team for the Yankees in those days. |
Love it, Michael!
Bravo! One of the highlights of my life was seeing Mickey Mantle knock one over Charley Finley's 40-foot high chain llnk fence in right field onto Brooklyn Avenue. A mule in left field, sheep grazing on the hill in right, a secondhand scoreboard from Braves Field in Boston and a mechanical rabbit delivering new baseballs to the umpires...to a kid like me, it was Disneyland and I loved every minute of it.
Never seen that Butternut piece...some day we'll do a thread on the A's and it may only interest the two of us! |
I'm really digging this thread guys. Just fantastic stuff!

Draper & Maynard Co. Account Book
Below is an account book of A. F. Burtt, who worked for the Draper and Maynard Company in the 1890s. Burtt keeps track of the production of gloves, mitts, outseems, etc. including the cost and time starting with the year 1890. He also tracks his income from J. F. Draper. What is really cool about this is that A.F. Burtt invented a Catchers Mitt that was patented in 1895. Below, there is a photo of a page in the book that shows Burtt paying $20.00 for the patent on Nov. 9 1895! He also invented a Boxing Glove and Punching Bag... I am guessing there is about 100 pages where Burtt breaks down the individual operations and money for each step--cutting, stitching, welt, trimming, finishing, etc.

Here's a group shot of the baseball player dolls my mother makes for me...she usually gives one to me on my birthday and one on Christmas...There are 11 in the shot, but I now have 12...just haven't gotten around to taking a new team photo. :)

I see old Cy and Shoeless Joe... those are great!
|
Dan- those are sensational. They have a nice folk art quality to them. I see some business potential there. How does she do the faces?
|
Thanks guys...Barry, she paints the faces. They are very much a folk art style doll. About 5 or 6 years back I was up at her house and I saw a couple of dolls in this style that she had made...I told her that if she could make a doll like that and slap a baseball uniform on it, it would be perfect...so she did and the rest is history. I'll take an updated shot tonight that includes the Mordecai Peter Centennial "three finger" Brown she made me for my birthday. I still haven't decided on who I want her to make for Christmas.
|
Do you know the total time it takes to make one of them? I really think they are great.
I see running across the bottom row Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Joe Jackson. Or is that Mike Kelly, with Young to his left? |
I'm not sure of her total time to make one....I'd have to ask, but I know she doesn't just sit down and make it in a day...she does a bit and comes back to it. It is Mike King Kelly in the gray uniform...and actually I had her make Smokey Joe Wood, but sometimes the face doesn't always come out how she wants it to, so if someone sees Cy Young instead, that's fine. She uses the Hall of Fame's Uniform Database for colors and style. My favorite is the first one she made for me...Old Hoss Radbourne on the top row. I should have asked her to make him 'flipping the bird' :D
|
Quote:
I don't know Barry. The ears don't look quite right. :D |
I was identifying them by the uniform. It is a little tough doing it by facial features. And while many African-Americans played for the Dodgers, I naturally guessed Jackie.
|
Just saw Jim's post.:)
The ears may not be right, but check out the funky shoes on Joe Wood and Mike Kelly. That is really amazing! |

Here are a couple worthy of showing...
A mint condition, never-used Lucky Strike straight razor, and a Baseball Anonymous Tie Bar. I got the Baseball Anonymous piece because it looked really nifty and depicts two rather secretive hands shaking. Almost like a tribute to those of us who admit to being addicted collectors... sort of like gamblers anonymous or alcoholics anonymous. Does anyone know what "Baseball Anonymous" might really pertain to? The reverse is inscribed to Jersey Schalk (a nickname or possible relative of Ray Schalk?) Please provide any insight you may have, and thanks! |
Great items Mark. I really love all the oddball stuff the board has posted...

From the DiMaggio estate comes a nifty piece of Yankees luggage that was a gift to Joe DiMaggio from the team for the 1977 Old Timers Game. I don't have a scan of the inside but the lining is pinstriped. It looks really cool. Also comes with the original shipping box with the Clipper's San Francisco address and the Yankee logo on the label.

Baseball Anonymous ???
Hey Perezfan,
I found this online biography pertaining to Red Faber with the following quote. Perhaps your Tie Bar is related?? "In retirement, Faber was among the founders of Baseball Anonymous, an organization created to help former ballplayers (and athletes from other sports) who were down on their luck. Growing to nearly 700 members (at $2 per year) in its first year, Baseball Anonymous performed many good deeds; most were handled quietly, but in 1958, when Faber was the group's general chairman, Baseball Anonymous arranged a Comiskey Park ceremony to honor former White Sox pitching great Ed Walsh, who was 77 years old and struggling physically and financially. The group also staged benefits for other former players who had fallen upon hard times. Faber was a regular at Hot Stove League banquets and old-timers games in Chicago and Milwaukee." |
Perez,
This may help as well... "It was in these later years that Schalk operated a popular bowling and pool hall establishment in Evergreen Park, Illinois. Ray was also one of the founders of Baseball Anonymous, an organization whose charge was to assist indigent ballplayers. In 1965, after assistant coaching at Purdue University for 18 years, Ray Schalk finally retired from baseball at the age of 72. Interestingly, throughout all his years following the game of baseball, Schalk would never fail to call and congratulate the catcher of a no-hitter. Schalk always remained popular with Chicagoans, and was invited to catch the first ball of the 1959 World Series, thrown out by Red Faber." |
Shawn...
Thanks so much for researching that! That's terrific information and seems to leave little doubt as to what the tie bar represents. The Schalk tie in confirms it... I really appreciate the info, as now this piece has true meaning (other than just looking really cool). Thanks again for providing a perfect example of what makes this forum so great! |
