June 2009 Pickup Thread
Very happy to have these two, both with help from people here that called them to my attention or I'd never have seen them:
I am wildly happy to have this one. I also wildly overpaid, but was in "have to have it" mode. I think it is from 1890 based on image and uniform similarity to the 1890 Franklin Young Ladies Base Ball Club cab. This thing is in great shape. The gloss is almost perfect and the image is one of the clearest I have. Really cool ring bats and a few compelling faces, plus maybe the youngest girl I've ever seen on one of these photos or PC's - check out the girl top row third from right - leaning on urn. Gah. She looks maybe 12-13? Tony Andrea pointed me in the direction of this one: [IMG][/IMG] A really cool Alta Weiss I'd not seen before. I really like the photos and PC's with identified and famous (in that time) female players. Assist to Mark Perez for taking the time to point this one out: [IMG][/IMG] |

Joann,
That cabinet is very cool! JimB |
Summer school tuition and books have floored me for June. My only pickup will probably be this fantasy card which I created. Unfortunately it only exists in my computer! Hope everyone else has a better month than me!!
Best, Shawn |
|
Shawn, great card! My favorite player in my favorite Topps set (55)!
|
Very nicely done Shawn. Bob Lemke can tell you exactly how to turn that into a physical card...he made me a similar fantasy card of Charley Peete that looks and feels like the real deal.

my pick up...
|
Cool Cards, Guys !
Jason - Love that Confectioner reverse...
Shawn - A tip of the cap to you as well... 55 is one of my all-time favorite sets and you should make that into a nice reprint... :) |
Thanks guys...that is the first "card" I have ever made. '55 is my favorite postwar set and mine is half complete. Gotta love Hal. Jeff, that is your autograph, hope you don't mind that I "borrowed" it. :)
|
Thanks, Jeremy. I'm not quite sure what it is about the card, but it is easily the favorite of my recent pickups.
Great OJ, cozmokramer. |
Shawn, no problem, it looks great.

Quinn...
I thought this was a decent deal for $10... read the bio too. Kinda cool.

I have gotten a little side tracked lately, but these are some of things to show for it.

Sorry, boxing, but I've always wanted this Dana photo. Picked it up in last night's Gaynor/Dent auction:
Attachment 1244 A classic pre-match line up. But the stark difference between the tough and ripped Kaufmann and the bald Sullivan in his bagging shorts makes me :). BTW: Sullivan was a middleweight (won 72 (KO 22) + lost 36 (KO 7) + drawn 42). Kaufman was a heavyweight (won 25 (KO 16) + lost 8 (KO 5) + drawn 1). In this fight Kaufmann outweighed Sullivan by 30 pounds and won by decission. Kaufmann was one of the "Great White Hopes," but never panned out. Attachment 1246 |
Wow Dean. That Young is such a nice, nice card. Not just a nice Young or a nice T206 or a nice 40. It's a really great-looking card overall. I wish all my cards looked that good - especially all the 40's!
Great pickup. J |

Nice Young portrait. I too picked one of those up as I think it is a great card of the winningist pitcher there will ever be. Classic Horner type portrait on a classic green background. Vintage cards just don't get better they only get different.

Jay, that is a fantastic card ! Helen really liked baseball more than your average fan. Great collectable for a fan of OJ era baseball, especially one who likes NY. Are examples of Helen Dauvray tough to come by (I suspect they are)? That would be a great companion piece with one of the Dauvray pins (I'm aware of three from 1887 Detroit team).
|
Joe--Her cards are available, although like most cards from the period not too available, if you know what I mean. She comes listed as Helen Dauvray, or, more preferably, as Helen Dauvray Ward. The only cards I have seen in the latter format are an Old Judge actress card in which she is wearing a large hat, and the Our Knocker Cigar card. I agree with you--she played an important role in early baseball, not only by donating the Dauvray Cup, but by being an outspoken female supporter for the game. BTW, I have always thought that a strong arguement could be made for including her Old Judge card in the baseball Old Judge "set".

Matt - that's a great looking Anson for the grade. Is there staining on the back or a crease I can't see?

My first Turkey Red...
I only have a handful of cards but am fond of the Turkey Reds and have been on the lookout for a presentable top-tier HOF T-3 at a good price. I found this and it fits in quite nicely into my display.

Not baseball but I was happy to recently pick up this N150 Honest Long Cut of boxing Champion John L. Sullivan.
I can honestly say I don't know much about the non-actresses cards from this set, although from the limited research I have done I can't find much out about them. I would appreciate any info anybody has on difficulty, rough value, etc. (I'm sure Adam W. knows as much as anybody about this kind of stuff!). The front is nice but there are two strips of paper-loss on the back. -Rhett http://starsofthediamond.com/n150sullivan.JPG |

After getting outbid on the last two Moran Auctions (Heritage & Ebay), I finally landed this one from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=160340817158 .
I decided not to haggle with a best offer and just said what the heck and "Buy it Now" for $39.99. Now if I can just find that Hoblitzell and Wilhelm (willing to spend a little more than $39.99 for them). |
My latest from the BST.
