June Pickup Thread
Just got this nifty pinback off of ebay. The "Murphy Did It" team of Omaha, NE...the picture is out of a book on Omaha baseball...I once bid on the postcard but got outsniped for it...have never seen another since.

Dan was Murphy's some type of automaker/dealership or was it just the name of the team? Neat little pickup.
I got this 1919 panorama of the Ft. Leavenworth 49th infantry teams. Pretty long panorama at 42". |
Blair, Wisconsin
Nice one Dan! I'm not sure why a town of maybe just a few hundred would have a baseball association but they are very near a few towns that did have minor league clubs.

Clint, Murphy's started out making wagons and then moved to automobiles in the early 1900s. Sweet yardlong there btw. and nice pin Andy.
|
Thanks Dan. That was a complete guess on the automobile part. It just looked like some similiar automotive pins I've seen in the past.

Hi-
I acquired the two pieces scanned below last month, but I did not scan them until recently, so I am counting these as June pickups. Thanks to BigFish (Toby) for the cabinet card! The picture of the Wesley team (most likely from Wesley Maine) was an antique show find. I love the puffy pants in the cabinet photo as well as the possible identification on the back (Churchill, not a known ballplayer, but I still like having a name to go with a photo). With the Wesley team photo, I was drawn to the knob on one of the bats as well as the catcher's mask on the ground. |
I don't post much over on this side, but I'm quite happy with some old Life magazines that I purchased at a yard sale the other day. The time honored gentleman had 3 stacks of Life magazines dating from 1957 to 1967. I took my time and searched each magazine looking for sports articles. I ended up buying close to a dozen. The nice man drove a hard bargain, asking me for a dollar for each magazine and three dollars for the one issue with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Thought that I might share this story. I will post half of a scan since the magazines were so large in those days that they won't all fit on my scanner.

Hi everyone. Im new to the forum, and this stuff is awesome. I am a semi collector, but due to finances, of not a lot, but LOVE the old memorabilia and stuff. Some really cool finds in this thread, esp the Negro league Postcard.
|
I'm sure many of you saw this on ebay, but I'm happy to add this one to the collection.
Matt http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/IMG_2554.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/IMG_2547.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/IMG_2549.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/IMG_2548.jpg |
Wow Matt, that bat looks even better with your pictures. Awesome pickup and I'm glad you got it.
Clint |
I just got this from the UPS man here at work a little bit ago...it doesn't fit on my scanner (which is why it's blurry) so that's the best I can do without a camera...the photo is actually a cabinet photo. This also came with a scrapbook of the team from a young gal that followed them from the first day of the season to the last and cut out every single article from the newspaper.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...orfolk1940.jpg I can't wait to get home because my wife called and said a package has arrived. I'll take photos and show that item tonight. |
Dan, very cool WL item. Show us the book when you get a chance too.
|
Congrats Matt! I thought D. B. won that one!?!?!

These were waiting for me when I got home....they were sold in a lot, but I really only wanted the Nebraska State League sealed baseball. The rest are up for trade if someone has any Nebraska related memorabilia or cards.
the rest are Florida State League (Sealed), Eastern League (Sealed), Northwest League, Northern League, and Sophomore League. |

Clint, here's a shot of the 1940 Norfolk scrapbook and photo.

Dan,
Send them in to Coach's Corner. I'm pretty sure they have some "big" signings scheduled. |
Dan, very cool I love those old scrapbooks.

I'm anxiously awating the arrival of this from Huggins and Scott . . .

Just got this in the mail. Not vintage but another O's favorite.
|
Nice Clint....how many O's jerseys do you have now?
|
Thanks Dan. This is my 9th knit and I have one flannel too. I bought this about 2 months ago and it took shipping it twice through the post office and once through UPS to get it. It was worth the wait though.

I know this is really far from baseball but it's my only june pickup so far, it's still vintage though. It's a 1943 Smith-Corona 03-A3, 30-06, most likey used in WW2.
|
Smith-Corona made rifles? Was this during the war years only?
|
Dan,
When the war came around the government had them start making rifles. They went from typewriters to military rifles then switched back after the war. |

my first day at net54...
Hello everyone. I'm brand new to the board but not the hobby. Am basically a news service photo collector but dabble in memorabilia, autographs, and ticket stubs. Here are a few items I just picked up...

Great stuff.... love those Willie Mays Sunglasses. Did those come from Inside the Park Collectibles? I know they recently had a pair. Very cool!

Carlton, do you have any information on Frederic Stanley??? It didn't even dawn on me about other works that he had done (including Coca Cola). My dad and I own this ORIGINAL painting by Mr. Stanley (assuming he's the same Frederic with a "c") that was done in 1913 for the James Hanley Brewing Company. Back in the thirties, the painting was actually insured by LLoyds of London by the brewery. Any help would be most appreciated. Greg Edited to ad that I wonder if this is the same artist. Born in 1892 would have made him 21 when he did the painting. Not impossible, but... |
FINALLY got something new worthwhile posting. Picked this up at the Shriner's Show in Wilmington yesterday from Phil Castinetti at SportsWorld.
1904 Regular Season Scorecard proudly stating "World's Champions" from the 1st WS victory over Pittsburgh the previous year. Nice pickup there Greg!
and love that Rochester minor league stuff. Looks like June has been good to everyone. |
Outstanding additions Greg. It's nice to see you back in action. I know you are torn between the brew and baseball collection, but keep fair balance will ya?...ha ha.
|
Hey Guys,
Glad to have finally posted something. It's been tough, Mike, real tough finding sports over the beer. :D Anything I've seen lately for the Sox has been either not to my liking, or way too expensive. It was nice to pick up the '04 scorecard. Carlton, Any chance of posting a close-up of the artist's signature on that piece? I would love to compare it. From what I can see on your scan, it looks pretty darn close to that on my dog (also known as "The Watchdog of Quality"). Thanks again, Greg |

Freeric Stanley
Greg, That's a great painting, probably one of the best bull dog paintings extant. Reminds me of a bull dog poster I have that may be my favorite non-sport poster ever though it's a bit beat up, see below. Don't know a whole lot about Frederic Stanely off hand. Below a shot of the signature on the poster, plus another non sport poster I have that he did.
<img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/FredericStanleySig.jpg"> <img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/arrowother.jpg"> <img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/BullDog.jpg"> |
Thanks for posting those pics Carlton. Love your dog as well. I'll have to check the signature when I get home. Seems a little different, but it could be a timeline thing.
The Hanley Brewery used this Bulldog on much of it's advertising in the thirties and forties. I have a ton of stuff showing the bulldog, which in one way is sort of bad because I kind of get tired of seeing so much of it all over my room :D You can see him and all his puppies at our website www.rhodeislandbreweryhistory.com just go to the Hanley section All the best, Greg |
Bull Dog
Greg, You're welcome...just from eyeballing it, I'd be surprised if it's not the same artist...Is that painting the center piece of your Hanley collection? That illustration at the bottom the Hanley page of the puppy in front of the painting saying "That's my pop" is quite something...that would be your painting I assume....great website you have... I like the music intro...if it the same artist, please post a photo of the signature.
|
Carlton,
Will get a photo of the signature, hopefully tonight. I've been swamped with meetings this week at night and have only been home to sleep. Yes, that painting in the puppy print is our painting. Although the painting is pretty cool, it's not really the center of our Hanley pieces. The best Hanley piece in our collection is the round reversed glass sign with the silver lettering and original frame c. 1900. That is hand painted and just a killer piece of advertising in it's own right. Then again, picking and choosing what piece is your best piece is kind of like saying you have one favorite child out of many. All the best, Greg |
June pickups
Nice Wagner fishing photo with names written in Wagner's hand on back-
L/R- Abbaticchio, Miller, Wagner, Clarke, (last one unreadable) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3331/...2b0b85a3_b.jpg |
That's a great photo!
|
Can you post a scan on what was written for the guy far right?
|
June pickups/Wagner photo back
|
Well - I also can't match the last one to a name or nick-name, nor can I match the face. It almost looks like "Reserve".
|
Isn't the last one "Revere"?
|
No one named Revere played for the Pirates or any MLB team. Of course we don't know if that guy was a ballplayer.
|
Do you happen to have any provenance/history on that piece?
It looks like the handwriting is actually in Abbaticchio's hand. The "EJA" matches up to a couple of examples I have. Note that it is also written in ballpoint. Wagner's signature was in the infancy of aged shakiness by the time the ballpoint pen was beginning to be used on this continent. |
Cap River sounds like it could be the fishing destination.
|
I agree with Jodi--that's not Wagner's handwriting.
|
Wagner photo
My understanding is that it came from Wagner's Grand daughter. The Wagner name looks like very late period "Honus Wagner" signatures. Cap was his pet name for Fred Clarke, the manager he spent nearly his entire career playing for.
My guess is that with the last name he is just referring to the river man, probably a local who helped them find the good fishing spot. (which they obviously found) The photo and writing are pretty consistent with other examples I've seen of a very old Wagner documenting his life and friends for posterity. The writing with pen probably occurred in the late 40's or 50's. I do have some similar photos that came from his estate with similar writing. I will check when I get access to them and post later on this board if there is any interest. This one came on it's own. |

Usually, the only people to refer to a person using a monogram is the person who the monogram belongs to or, once in a while, a biographer of that person. And, of course, if the person is actually well-known by their initials (such as Yves Saint Laurent, Hunter S. Thompson, etc.).
I am convinced that it's Abbaticchio's writing. Attached please see my findings using letter-by-letter comparison. Perhaps it was an old photo that Abbaticchio found years after the fishing trip and sent to Wagner in the 1950's. That makes sense, as Abbaticchio maintained correspondence with his teammates, and this also explains how the item originates from Wagner's estate. |

Look at the "W" in these two Wagners:
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...gner_check.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...iratesball.jpg Quite different fom the "W" on the photo (which is identical to Abbatachio's.) |

Jodi- thanks for the scans/info. That's the fun of collecting this kind of stuff. Trying to figure out how it came to be. Can I send you or post a Barney Dreyfus auto I have for an opinion? Thanks again, Bob
|
1 Attachment(s)
Here is another one for comparison.
Also, my opinion is that Abbaticchio probably got sentimental and mailed this photo to his friend Wagner with notations to remember the event and that is how it got in Wagners estate with Ed's handwriting. I also do not believe the guy in the photo looks anything like Fred Clarke and I share the sentiment that the handwriting is Ed Abbaticchios and the last notation is "Cap River" which is probably the fishing spot. Whether that is the actual name of it or a name they gave it is unknown but that is my feeling on it. Rhys |
As to Abbaticchio, Dots Miller and Wagner - it certainly is them.
On Clarke - I would say it could be him - but I can't tell for sure either way. Is there a Cap River? |
Abbaticchio
I found an example of Abbaticchio's signature that I've had for awhile. It's a 1956 GPC. After comparing the sigs in person, I would agree, that is who wrote on the back of the photo. (gotta love the internet, thanks to all who had input!).
I am convinced that Cap=Fred Clarke after looking at some old Pirates team photos I have. Guess I'll be doing some photo scanning this weekend (between managing 4 Baseball games). Thanks Again- Next will be a Barney Dreyfuss signed 1923 season pass. |
1888 Detroit at Philadelphia
1 Attachment(s)
I won the original glass plate negative this image was developed from early this year but just now received the image from the negative. Doug Munson at Chicago Albumen Works (actually in MA) did a fantastic job of obtaining a strong image from a fairly light negative (and adding a sepia tint). The negative measures 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" and came with period paper stating it was Detroit vs Philadelphia, 1888. Detroit is batting with what appears to be an RBI double (if umpire was initially behind plate, maybe a single if umpire was by pitcher to begin with). Notice the bat and catchers mask to the right of the plate and the lone umpire running towards second to make the safe call. The outfield fence is loaded with neat advertising (far easier to see on hi res scans), would like to know what the baseball figure in straight-away center represents. You just don't see this type of material very often. Has anyone seen this image as a cabinet?

A little better look . . .
|
Joe - great image! Do you know if was in Detroit or Philly?
I'm assuming Detroit is the dark pants team. (Thanks for the blow-ups which you posted just as I posted this - the sign says Broad St. Station Philadelphia) |
Joe, I was hoping whoever won that negative would show us all a good shot of what was on there. How rare to see such an early action shot of a major league game. That is simply amazing. Congrats!
|
Joe - amazing image. If you dont mind me asking, which auction did this come from?
|
Jon, IIRC it was in a Hunts monthly internet/phone auction.
|
The negative actually came from eBay, well sort of. I was high underbidder but the winning bidder sold it to me (after Kevin Cummings put me in contact with him). It was one of those items that stayed low and it was tough to decide on an appropriate snipe. What was a couple hundred dollars became $2,800 in the final ~5 seconds. The original eBay seller purchased it years ago from an auction house.
|
Thanks for the info guys - its really an amazing image.
|
I'm almost certain that negative was in a Hunt's monthly auction within the last 6 months...I think I even bid on it. I'm at work so I don't have my catalogs handy, but I'll check when I get home....I didn't see it on ebay, but it sold for a lot less in the Hunt auction.
Unfortunately the Hunt's website doesn't archive the monthly auctions, and I can't find it in the google machine. |
Hmmm, I would be interested in anything you could dig up. This negative ended on eBay Christmas Eve (12/24/08). I would be disappointed at myself if I missed an earlier sale (but still completely satisfied with the item itself). I'm pretty good at keeping up on all the auction catalogs and internet offerings.
|
Here you go Joe...it was in the December 3rd Hunt's internet/phone auction. I bid on it, but was probably the third or fourth underbidder.
http://www.huntauctions.com/phone/im...56&lot_num=284 |
Thanks Dan, not sure how I missed that one. I frequently bid and win Hunt items. Several people brought it to my attention when it hit eBay, none of which noticed it a couple weeks earlier. I'm happy to have it in my collection regardless of price paid.
|
Wow Joe. How great is that? I don't think I knew that it was possible to get an action shot in 1888. I guess I thought (without really thinking about it) that photos at that time were still long sitting sessions in studio. What a great image and nice surprise.
And now for this question. Anyone think that maybe there were more home runs hit to that acreage in left field without the fence than there would have been with a typical-distance fence? It looks like hard liners and even ground shots that might normally bounce off a wall could go a long ways in a field with that design. That's as cool to think about as anything. If it weren't for the loss of seating and concessions in one part of the outfield, it would be interesting to have a modern club think about such a design. J |
Joann -
The image below from Library of Congress is claimed to be a c1886 Chicago at Washington NL game played at the Swampoodle grounds in DC. A companion image (with the batting/pitching teams reversed) appears in Baseball in Washington DC by Frank Ceresi, Arcadia publishers, on page 14. http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/s...188628299u.jpg |
