May 2009 Pickup Thread

Little early but thought I'd get the new board going with a pickup thread.

Bob, be sure to repost that nice green Cobby.

Picked up these nice raw 1911 Zeenuts on ebay this week;

T205 with Cycle back

Brian Weisner 04-30-2009 02:45 PM

Hi Steve,
I thought you already owned all of the Zeenuts on the planet....:)

Be well Brian

PS I think you are padding your post count to get a "Major Title"....:D

DeadBall - what is the qualifier from? front looks good to me.

deadballera 04-30-2009 02:58 PM

the front looks good.

the back is off-center, I didn't mind. Even more surprising to see it with a Cycle back. I know it's not the rarest of backs, but it wasn't listed with the brand in the description.

Matt 04-30-2009 03:21 PM

WOW!

Jeff - you going to pay for that one?

calvindog 04-30-2009 03:24 PM

LOL I'm standing in line behind the last four winners of Tip Top Wagners...so that's a definitely maybe.

deadballera 04-30-2009 03:25 PM

that is a nice Wagner !!! Congrats

rman444 04-30-2009 04:19 PM

That is a funny looking Cobb card.

calvindog 04-30-2009 04:27 PM

Well, that's true. And I bought it on the off chance one of you guys will put a post up in the BST looking for Wagner cards!

Abravefan11 05-01-2009 07:33 AM

That's a nice piece of Cobb trade bait!

Great card Jeff.

Doug 05-01-2009 07:47 AM

It's a bit rough, but the image is outstanding!

I don't like Lichtman.

barrysloate 05-01-2009 08:29 AM

I think Jeff should hold onto that Wagner card...it's a beauty and there aren't too many Cobb cards out there that compare (maybe a couple).

Rob D. 05-01-2009 08:32 AM

Joe: Nobody does.

calvindog 05-01-2009 08:36 AM

Screw you guys...I'm going...home.

Awesome Rob!

I was hoping that one went to you.

(or me :))

Rob D. 05-01-2009 08:59 AM

I think a lot of potential bidders weren't aware that that's Ty Cobb in the back row, far right.

(BTW: Always looking to trade for Boston Garter cards.)

calvindog 05-01-2009 09:09 AM

Ha! I thought it might be Cobb hiding in the shadows...but I measured the ears up and they were about 4 inches off. My margin of error on Cobb ears is 3 inches so I decided not to bid.

Matt 05-01-2009 09:19 AM

That's not too far off - Ty Cobb in a Cleveland uniform in a team picture has happened...

Leon 05-01-2009 09:39 AM

Jeff

I know I for one am just happy that your very best card came from your very favorite company. Oh the irony.....

barrysloate 05-01-2009 09:41 AM

But this is a new company with a new business plan.

calvindog 05-01-2009 09:43 AM

Wait -- are you telling me that Legendary Auctions has something to do with Mastro?

barrysloate 05-01-2009 09:45 AM

When your package comes in the mail, check out the shipping tape. That should go a long way in determining if they are related.

Pssst, Jeff, those aren't Cobbs.

calvindog 05-01-2009 05:19 PM

Yes, I was in a lull. The lull did not last long.

glad to see he snapped out of it on his own.

Joe, I blame the entire spasm of spending on you. Honestly, you made me do it.

Jim VB 05-01-2009 09:34 PM

Those are the nicest Pittsburg Cobb and Boston Cobb I have ever seen.

All kidding aside, great cards.

latest pick-up

i picked this one up on eBay a few weeks ago. It was either this one or the REA SGC Plank e95. I thought the eBay would be better value, but both ended around the same price. Both were bargains!

Congrats on the E97! FYI - you don't need to both embed the image and attach it. Either one by itself will allow everyone to see it full size.

tbob 05-04-2009 09:52 AM

Thanks Doug. In the REA thread I posted the other new pickups this week, the 1955 Bowman complete set and also the E94 Young, Bates, Lobert, Cicotte and Evers. The gold background Young cost an arm and a leg but it's the first gold color variation of Young I've seen so I had to have it. :)

Doug 05-04-2009 10:02 AM

Sweet cards too! Lots of great stuff this month everybody!

Matt 05-04-2009 10:08 AM

Because of the ability to have limited posts per page (which will avoid the slow loading issue of a 100 post thread) and also because we're not using a host anymore that loses the images after 2 weeks, I thought maybe we could try having just 1 pickup thread per month.

I love the Boston Garter and CJ Cobb. Great cards. I picked up these items in the last 2 auctions:

Lionel Carter's 1933 Delong set (Combining my favorite set from the 1930s with the connection to Lionel Carter makes this my favorite set):

Dan,
They're British so they like to mark their spot like a good dog if you know what I mean. The ever so slight oil leak occasionally but other than that, no. I have owned an MGB since 1975 so you have to learn how to work on them. Once you get the electrical issues worked out, they are a labor of love.
