|
Rare Topps Test Issues
Posted By: <b>Bob</b><p>Randy,<br /><br />No, I don't have the Nye (rats). I have Gentry, Hartenstein, Higgins, Laboy, Motton, NL Playoff Game 3, Niekro, and Santorini. I also have partial cards (located at the edge of the sheet, similar to the '72 cloth sheet if you've seen that one) of Alston, Culp, and Lowell Palmer.<br /><br />I have no idea how many exist. I've never seen two of the same player, but that doesn't mean much. I passed on a Jerry McNerty in the '80s because the guy wanted $100 and I wanted to pay $75. I'm an idiot.<br /><br />Bob

I'm also not sure whether that's one of the few that Larry (sflayank on CU) is missing.<br /><br />Since you talked to Steve W. at the National, he probably mentioned the large number of Punchout panels that he had recently seen. Gibson was not on any of those.<br /><br />Bob

Posted By: <b>Al</b><p>I still need 6 to complete that set, including Gibson. Larry also needs that one. I have not seen it in any condition. Nor have I seen the Brooks Robinson that is supposed to be in that set.<br /><br /> Dave--great picture of Carl Furillo. How do you suppose Topps managed to get 3 of the 8 cards in that set wrong ? Also, I mailed you one of the 80 scratch off games. Per our prior e mails, I still do not think they had anything to do with the 80 test coins. The big book list 4 different materials used in the 76 Cloth prototypes, which version is the one you picutred if you can tell ? Did you know each of the 68 deckle prototypes come with any of three different colored autographs, red, blue and black. I know one obsessed collector who has the "set" all three ways, but don't worry Bob, I will not name him. Also, did you know there is a 1991 version of the 76 Garagiola card you posted.

Rare Topps Test Issues
Posted By: <b>Dave Hornish</b><p>Yeah, Topps had a bad day at the factory with those 53 Reprints!<br /><br />The 76 Cloth have a backing and are similar to the 77's in texture. I also have what is likely the sheerest of the 4 types as well in separate pieces. I missed out on an Ebay auction that had three of the four and the other two I did not have looked like thicker and thicker again versions of the sheer, flannel like ones.<br /><br />I still need the blue and black 68 Deckle Proofs. I have seen them and passed at what were good prices last year and regret that now. I relly need to get to the next National to search for some of the remaining types I need for the Topps run from 49-80.<br /><br />I was not aware of the 91 Garagiola at all. I cut everything I collect (or at least track and try to obtain) off at 1980 although I do have some research material on post 80's stuff and have a bunch of 80's issues but I haven't tried to checklist all those sets and then what I have as well. Not enough time in the day unfortunately to do that any time soon.<br /><br />I have to say I am not regretting just going after a type of each of the Topps issues. The values on someare really zooming right now.

Rare Topps Test Issues
Posted By: <b>Anthony</b><p>I"ve heard of a lot of stories of Kellogg's cracking in the holders, it seems to always be from collectors in cold climates. Last I checked none of mine had cracked, but cold here is 65 degrees. I would think since the same company produced the Topps as the Kellogg's that the same issues would be encountered.<br /><br /> Bob, have you had any issues with yours cracking?<br />
|
Rare Topps Test Issues
Posted By: <b>Paul S</b><p>My Kellogg's 3D-s (not test issues, and not in holders) tend to warp. Maybe those that are restrained from this tendancy, such as those in a holder, cause the card to instead crack -- sort of like the weakest link in a chain...the card is "looking" to give at some part. (Anyway that's my theory...conversely, I could be full it it.)

Anyone know anything about this - 1967 Topps Pinup Sticker - Sticker backing similar to 1967 Pirate stickers and 1968 Action all star stickers, glossy front, no #??

Anyone know where I can get a sheet like this cleanly cut? Here's some incentive - I'd be willing to sell some panels if I could get it cut!! Anyone know what the story is with these - seem to be "plenty" of singles around, but I own the only panels I've ever seen - 1 set and this uncut sheet. Anybody. Anybody.

There is no known 66 Clemente Punchout
I may have created the misconception the Clemente exists a long time ago based upon an erroneous assumption on my part but have seen no confirmation it does. Here is the known 66 PO checklist:
http://toppsarchives.blogspot.com/se...%20Punchboards However, there are possibly a few more out there if my theories are correct so it's possible I guess. |

Dave,
Thanks for the update on the 66 punchouts. I bought the 66 PO from the Mastro auction 10 years ago. Unfortunately, I sold it 9 years and 11 months ago. I don't know if you've confirmed through your research multiple copies of any of them , but the one I sold went to a Mays collector, so if the guy who has the small group of them has the Mays (and is not the Mays collector), they produced at least 2. I too would be interested in taking a shot at buying some/all of them. Larry - Firstly I think you'll need an extra ? in your starting bid - Secondly, I'll split them with you:) Any comments/info on the 67 Pinup Sticker I posted?? How about were a guy can get a 1971 Bazooka numbered sheet cut? -Howard |
topps test
hi
yes i should have put 5 ????? in my bid im just hoping it doesnt need 6 larry |
The '66 Punchouts in the large collection had finished backs from what I remember of it; I can't find the confirming e-mail at present though. I haven't heard from the gent in months but he was hanging on to the cards at least until the economy improves IMO. He didn't seem in a hurry to consign them, that's for sure.
I was trying to confirm the Mays in Mastro so this is good intel here. I believe another Mays exists as well in addition to the one in the gent's collection but it could be the resale of the Mastro one. Our man had duplicate copies of some as well, not sure which ones. I believe 2-4 copies of each probably are known at this point, similar to the pop of the '61 Dice Game cards. |
Oh yeah, the 67 Pinup Clemente Sticker-I want to compare the sig to the one in the latest Clemente thread on this board, which has a solid blue auto of similar vintage. Will try that later if I have time (may not). I am presently thinking that sticker was a one-off produced at Topps as a lark, the quality is realy to good for it to be a fake I think believe.
|
Dave,
I posted the Clemente sig in the other thread. Although the sig on the 67 pin-up is close, I am 99.99% certain it is not legit. I have about 12 Clemente sigs and have collected him for a long time. I did a fair amount of research on his auto too in the past, and I don't believe it's good. I have talked with other serious Clemente collectors over the years, and we've had discussions about one of Clemente's friends (associate?) who used to sign some of his mail. I have a couple of examples similar to the one on the 67 pin-up that I purchased early on and from experience and discussions with other Clemente collectors I began to differentiate legit and non-legit. Once you've seen a significant amount of signatures, it becomes easier to pick them out. Mike |

I have not had the signature checked out by anyone so I do not know if opinion would leave it good or bad. That said, I HAVE had the Pin up sticker under a 20 power loop. Having been the unfortunate victim of counterfeits in the past, I took a REAL good look at the sticker - I saw nothing that would indicate to me it was a counterfeit. It has been a little while, but if my memory serves me correctly, the print was much tighter on the sticker than on an actual 67 pinup - to me indicating it would have to have been printed from an original source (How did they print these things back then?). Dave if it would help I could do a magnified high res scan of a part of it to share what I saw - even putting it next to a pin up. Probably wouldn't get to this for a while as life is a bit crazy now.
-Howard |
Dave and Howard,
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. It's just that I was burned on a couple of Clemente sigs early on, and I vowed never to let it happen again. I remember the name of Clemente's "alleged" ghost-signer, it was Phil Dorsey. It's possible this item was signed in the late 1960's by Dorsey and then the test could have been produced. I don't have the knowledge on Topps test issues that the both of you do, my opinion was only on the auto. Here are some more of mine to compare: http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...teSigned1b.jpg http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...esTmSigned.jpg http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...menteAutoA.jpg http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...emente3x5a.jpg Here are some that are not mine, but I saved scans: http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...gleSigned1.jpg http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...rd1CloseUp.jpg http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...ck10-14-72.jpg http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...hot1960sBk.jpg Note the differences in how Clemente formed the letter "T", also the "Best" in Best Wishes, the formation of "b" in Roberto, the legs in the "R" in Roberto, etc. I would not bet my life on it, but like I said I have seen A LOT of Clemente autos and although there are some variances in his legit signature, they still have the same characteristics. Thank you to Mike and Dave for all the input trying to solidify an opinion. As much as I AM a self proclaimed expert on Clemente issued cards and memorabilia, I am NOT in the least bit qualified to offer an opinion on his signature. I decided years ago not to even try as the thought of forgeries was too scary. Scared to the point that I passed on an opportunity to purchase a 30+ year collection of over 100 signed Clemente items(about 18 years ago). That said, I am very familiar with Phil Dorsey ( A close friend of Clemente's )and the realtively universal thought that he signed many Clemente ghost signatures. I did not buy the pin up for the autograph. In fact, I bought it despite it. I wish it wasn't there - perhaps one day if I get a consensus of opinions that it is not good I will try to wipe it off
(Just kidding. Did I get you?) While some might disagree, imo the scarcity/potential unique status of the item far outweighs any value/added value the signature has. To end, a question, would there be some potential variation attributable to the style of pen and surface? And the conversation continues................ |

1973 Topps test issue (of 1953)
Topps issued a limited production test issue designed in the style of their 1953 cards.
<img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/1972toppspaige.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> Only these 8 cards are in this set........ 1......"Satchell" Paige 2......Jackie Robinson 3......Carl Furillo (picture actually Johnny Antonelli) 4......Al Rosen (picture actually Jim Fridley) 5......Hal Newhouser 6......Clyde McCollough (picture actually Vic Janowicz) 7......"Peanuts" Lowery 8......Johnny Mize I will post the other 7 cards later. This test issue has always been a quite a mystery to me. Why only 8 cards; and, (as you said said) how did they foul up on 3 of them ? My understanding is that less than 200 sets were issued. Perhaps, some one on this forum will chime in that has some knowledge of this issue. TED Z |

Thanks for posting the link regarding this 1972 Topps test issue......very informative.
I always thought this set was a 1972 issue. But, Krause's Standard Catalog identifies it as a 1973 issue.... So, which year was it issued ? ? TED Z |
The whole thing is bizarre if you ask me, almost like they were sitting around having a few pops at the plant in Duryea and some had a "fun idea". Any why are they not referred to as "Baseball Stars", which appears to be the proper name for the set.
FWIW some people have questioned the accuracy of some items that appeared in TTS over the years, including this particular story. I think my explanation makes as much sense as anything else. |

Bump. Anymore test issue stuff to show? Still don't have an answer as to how/where to cut my sheet? Anybody? Thanks.

I only have 3 Topps test issues - the 1968 Plak and Disc, and the 1969 Super of Harmon Killebrew. I used to own most of the Plaks, several 1955 stamps, a 1961 Dice Game of Earl Battey, some 1970 Cloth Stickers and Candy Lids, some Punchouts and full sets of some of the easier issues like the 1974 Puzzles and 1967 Boston and Pittsburgh stickers. I never dreamed when I sold everything off around 20 years ago that it would be so hard to find them again; as late as 1991 the scarcest things I had barely fetched $100. Oh well. I'm still looking for a 1968 single panel Killebrew Action All-Star Sticker, and a 1967 Giant Stand-Up...

Can any experts out there educate me on what Topps test issues are somewhat misnamed, in that they were probably never test-marketed?
It seems to me that the 1967 and 1968 discs are just proofs that never made it to the marketing stage - correct? How about the 1967 Giant Stand-Ups? Were the non-proof variety ever tested, or is this issue in all its variations just something from Gelman's closet? I know there was a wrapper, but I think I've only ever seen one example. How about the 1973 comics and pin-ups? I think I've only ever seen (a picture of) one example folded around gum - all the others I've seen have been fold-free. Any reason to think these were ever really tested anywhere as gum wrappers? Is it safe to assume the 1955 stamps, 1970, 1972 and 1976 cloth stickers and 1966 punch-outs never saw any kind of test distribution? I think there's some anecdotal evidence that the 1968 plaks and 1961 dice game may have been tested on some very limited basis? How about the 1970 candy lids? Are they ever found attached to a tub, or with bent tabs? All the ones I've seen have looked unused/unissued. Thanks. |
I had 68 Plaks at one point
Which I bought at my local grocery store in New Jersey

I have an unopened 68 Plak pack and set and a set ot the 73 Comics and Pin Ups, plus an unopened 73 Comic pack. I have the 67 Discs, both Giants and All Stars, but they are on uncut sheets. I only have a handful of the 68 discs, all cut. I still need 4 of the 67 Stand Ups, but my partial set has a mix of proofs and the finished die cuts.
I have the 67 Punch outs, and a damaged package with 2 uncut strips. Do not have any of the 66s. I have all the Cloth sets, with the exception of the 70s....Bob is pigging all those :-). No Dice either --Larry and Bob are both pigging those :-) . I have only I one 55 stamp and unfortunately it is Don Mossi and the only thing you can see is ears. I can't argue with your conclusions other than I do not think the 61 Dice saw any real distribution to the public |
Major Topps proofs (that would be a great name for a drunk soldier), never tested at retail IMO:
55 Stamps 61 Dice 66 Punchouts (not the ones with the lineups) 67 3-D (the Brooks Robinson prototype) 67 Stand Ups without die cuts 67 Discs 68 Discs (all types) 70 Cloth Stickers 71 Rookie All Stars 72 Cloth Stickers 76 Cloth 80 Coins |
I have the 80 Coins, the 72 and 76 Cloths, and the 67 Discs.
Zip on the 61 Dice, 70 Cloth, 66 Punch Outs and 71 Artists Proofs. Have one 55 Stamp and 4 68 Discs. About half of my 20 67 Stand Ups are the proof, non die cut variety. I have a set of the 68 3Ds minus the Robinson prototype, but, Dave, there are two other proof cards involving that set that have surfaced that should probably be included with the Robinson...Can not recall the names, one was a no name Reds pitcher. Bob will remember. He remembers everything |
68 3D wasn't there an issued card of John O'Donoughue? I think that one had no writing on the front..just the 3D image...if I'm not mistaken.
