Starting the pickup thread for September.
Big card for my T205 HOF set, it took a long time to find one with good eye appeal in any grade.

Picked up this tough 1936 Wheaties Series 4 Gehrig with full borders to go along with the 1935 Series 1 and 1936 Series 3 pair I got at the National in July. My Gehrig trinity is now complete!!!

Plus I can eat my Wheaties in my 1937 Joe Dimaggio bowl every morning!!

mrreality68 09-01-2022 06:26 AM

Wow August went to fast.

Fast start to Sept with these 2 early pickups I see here.

Congrats

Just picked this one up last night, 1928 Zeenut Dolph Camilli. Pretty beat but given how tough it is, I'm not complaining.

1928 Lou Gehrig Exhibits.

Hands down my favorite Lou Gehrig image and one I’ve wanted in my collection from the first day I saw it.

Coming off his record breaking 1927 campaign, arguably one of the greatest seasons put together by any batter in history. This image shows Gehrig at the height of his career following through on a classic power swing that earned him the moniker “Iron Horse”. I imagine him following the ball to an outfield wall in the gap which he did so many times during the 1927 & 1928 seasons.

Just to put in perspective how good a hitter Gehrig was.

In 1927, Gehrig hit .373, with 218 hits: 101 singles, 52 doubles, 18 triples, 47 home runs, a then-record 175 RBIs (surpassing teammate Babe Ruth's 171 six years earlier), a .474 on-base percentage and a .765 slugging percentage.

In 1928, he hit .374, with 210 hits, 123 singles, 47 doubles, 13 triples, 27 home runs, 142 RBI’s, a .468 OBP, and .649 slugging percentage.

Oh, and in a 4-game sweep of the Cardinals in the 1928 World Series he averaged .545, .706 OBP, and 1.727 slugging which still stands as a World Series record today.

Truly, “The Iron Horse”.

Phil,
I'm glad to see the Iron Horse made it in ok. Such a beauty.

When feeling priced out of the current vintage baseball card market, do as I did...pick up some of these T113 Types of Nations cards and imagine that they are baseball players wearing less commonly seen baseball caps.

I am pretty sure the one from Wales wearing an upside down flower pot with wide rim is Harry Wright, depicted as an older gentleman.

Thanks Steve,

I can only blame Al Crisafulli for this months acquisitions, one more to go this month then I'm hanging up my spurs.

Interesting story about Hooper, when he retired he moved to the town I currently live in and lived one street over from the first home I bought. He's buried in a small churchyard cemetery that I can walk to from my current home.

To remain on topic, he also played a mean 3rd base.

It looks like his first name was Frank as per https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=gira--001fra. He is the only person with that last name on Baseball Reference.

I have twelve Zeenuts, and they all only have the last name on the card, and they are all slabbed with only the last name (even when the player is fairly well known, such as Ping Bodie).

I just busted this 1915 Cracker Jack out of one of those dreaded Pro Grading slabs. It wasn't easy because the plastic they use is like rubber and doesn't break. I basically had to pry the thing open, and reach in and quickly grab the card before it slammed shut on my fingers. It was graded an "8," but it's clearly not. Still, I love the image.

Just 2 that are known, one easy (e90-1) and one a bit harder (T216 Kotton).

Correct, from my understanding though, no VE of Young is known. Just to add, I have no reason to suggest a red croft doesn't exist either, but I'm not aware of one existing.

I'm working on a back run with the same circumstance, technically it could exist but nobody's ever seen one. I don't think you can count those, you have to be realistic at some point, good luck on closing it out.

Nice pick up for the back run, DJ. My guess is there are still some cards to be found. I love VE's so hopefully more of those come out in the future.

I won another (not Aaron) Judge rookie!!! This one looks great for the grade IMO, but more importantly, does not cut off the last letter in "Americans". Very few 1916 Joe Judge cards have the complete team designation--many have no part of the "s" showing.
