REA -- What Did you Get?

In my opinion, it was an amazing auction. I like the old and the rare, and there was plenty of that. I thought prices were very healthy, especially in T206-world, and with Cobbs and Wagners. Here is my haul. How did you do?

WOW. What a haul - congratulations. I was the underbidder on the nadja and I think you got a wonderful card.

Here is mine:

More than I wanted to pay for an A, but its very clean appearance-wise and I needed to cross this one off my list and Ruth isn't getting any cheaper. Happy to make this #50 in my M101-6 set...

Bicem 05-07-2018 08:09 AM

Huge card, congrats Chris

h2oya311 05-07-2018 08:12 AM

Congrats Chris! Beautiful Ruth and quite the accomplishment to get to #50!

I’ve been slowly building up my pre-war stamps collection. I made a huge dent with the large lot of 1914 Piedmont Stamps! I paid exactly what I had budgeted for them, so I’m thrilled.

I wish my negro league consignments had done better. Some people got some great deals...or perhaps the market is really just that soft for negro league material. I doubt the same guys who were spending big on negro league items have now shifted to T206! Although it feels that way after seeing the closing prices.

btcarfagno 05-07-2018 08:18 AM

My first foray into the world of cards (for my personal collection) in a very long time.

These are two of my favorite images ever produced on a card, and two of my favorite pre-war players. Really nice eye appeal on them, though the creases on the Cobb it could be a bit of a technical overgrade.

Scarcity-wise, tough to argue with an iconic Cobb card that is likely one of 10-15 that exist...maybe far less than that even. These no-offer backs are just so tough.

i was watching the cobb all weekend and think it is one of the best buys of the auction. having seen other T3s from that find on display at REA's table, the colors are amazing. i think you will be stunned (and happy). what a great price for that card, given the crazy hard back.

shammus 05-07-2018 08:38 AM

Did anyone happen to win lot #2642, a small group of seven e104s? I could use one or two of the cards if the winner was in a sharing mood :)

Thanks!

I am usually not one to post on these sort of threads but super excited to pick up the Betz Cabinet card ... as a die hard Orioles fan this is certainly a fun one to add to the collection.

Yes, Derek... the prices were a bit soft. I picked up a few items of yours and a few other but let some pieces go that were exceptional bargains as I just do not have unlimited funds! The ones that "hurt" are not placing an initial bid on the Detroit Stars photo and not making one more bid on the DiHigo Matanzas photo.

Did get the Irvin El Indio, Wreckers photo, Poinciana Cabinet, Torriente photo and the small Charleston photo (which I do not think was yours).

The Newark Eagles Team Photo with Irvin / Suttles / Day / Wells went for 3X what I recall it going for in the past (Hake's?). I thought that the Santurce Cangrejeros went cheap, I thought as did the Rube Foster program.

Thank you for that. I am thinking that maybe the "snow" on the card may have kept the price down a bit, but beggars cannot be choosers for a card as rare as this one. I am just amazed by the corners. T3's almost invariably have worn corners and this one (and the Waddell as well) has such great corners. And there is no possible way I could have gone after the prior Cobb from this find that went for almost four times what this one went for (graded SGC 60 and has the same "snow" as the one I won).

Any idea why the 1962 Topps set went for $45,000?? Seems fairly high grade but more than half of it isn't. Not sure I understand that one.

Thanks Al! Glad to see that many of these awesome items stayed "in the Net54 family". And I'm glad to see that my Betz Studio Cabinet stuck around as well....lots more selling this time around than buying (for me). Might be lots more to come as I trim down my collection a bit.

BTW, I think the Torriente team photo is the coolest item I've ever owned. You'll be floored at how clear the image is when you get it in hand!

I was shocked when I saw that price also....most of the "key" cards are midgrade at best. However, about half the set is described as being in NM-MT to MINT shape....if half the cards NM-MT to MINT slab as PSA 9s and average $300 each, the buyer will have at least broken even. Based on the description, seems like the "estimate" may have been a tad low.

Of the 50 "keys" that they gave the eyeball grading test, only four are said to be "mint". Maybe one of them is low pop? Looks like at least two people saw something though...

Tom - that T3 is awesome. Those colors just pop.

Jon - that poster is super cool. That would be on my wall in the most prominent position in my house if I had one.

You guys did tremendous! Love the Cobb T3! And Jon the goudey poster is sweeeeet! The E92 Wagner looks way better than a 1.5. And Chris that Ruth is big baller!

Would love to know who I battled with over the 1912 Red Sox World Champs panorama. Went down to the wire but I'd been bested with my other bids so wasn't about to let it go. Kudos to REA for the very reasonable $30 shipping fee.

Awesome pickups everyone!

I was after a bunch of postwar stuff as that is what I have collected.

To involve my kids in the hobby, we started collecting Pirates team sets from 1952-1973. Been at that for a few years - it's been awesome and fun (Stupid - 1952 Tony Bartirome! - probably never get that one)- my 11 year old has been really into it. He loves going to shows and perusing auction catalogs. He mentioned to me recently that he would like to start collecting some of the "older" cards - like the T206, etc. Then I read the post about the T3's REA was offering. Then I looked at them. Then I got attached! Then I won 3 of them. Looking forward to surprising my son with them. Not being familiar with the nuances of the issue - Is what REA posted about the "no offer back" thing accurate?

I also got a couple of postwar goodies - 59 Bazooka box (Mantle) - thought I got a great deal on that one - crease not withstanding, 59 salesman sample panel (Mantle) - someone else was fighting hard for that one, and the Exhibit advertising posters.

Any thoughts on the Heritage PSA 9 Mantle going for a record almost 3 million a week ago and then the REA 8 "only" selling for 300k, an 84K drop from what Heritage sold the same flip for last August??

Great Bazooka Mantle. I have seen only one other one that had the tab although I am sure there are others. Speaking of the tab, I wonder why it says the complete set is 9 players when it's something like 23?

I have had my eye on these for a long time. I have been an under bidder in the past. I am aware of 3 other 1959 complete boxes with Mantle - could there be another 1 or 2 or 3 - maybe. Regarding the "9 players". Bazooka first issued the set with just 9 Superstar players. Not sure why (presumably because it sold well) they later added 14 more - These are the super tough short prints.

That is tough losing a card like the D350-1 Standard Biscuit Ruth at the last minute, but at least you still got a nice consolation prize. I honestly was expecting the Ruth to sell for another bid or two as it was a very nice looking card and so, so rare with that back. I always thought that this specific back (along with D329 Weils, D352 Morehouses and H801-9 Globes) was cool since Burdick saw fit to give it is own ACC designation, while most of the rest are all lumped into the M101-5/4 number.

That Goudey advertising sheet is beautiful. I am surprised that REA did not offer more information regarding the restoration that they mentioned in their write up. It sounds like they are the ones who help facilitate the restoration. It would have been nice to have seen before and after pictures along with the "treatment report" that should have been supplied by the restorer.

I can confirm that Peter is a very reasonable buyer on the BST board and will pay strong if the card warrants it. However, using a Spaceballs analogy, he will not go up to "ludicrous speed!" I can not say the same for whoever spent $50k more on a Mantle Dice Game card than a decent Ruth rookie, but maybe I just don't get it.

Nice card! The portrait 7.5 went for over $10k - a high for that card.

The glove in air, throwing, and leaping no scoreboard cards were steals imo.

Such a cool box. I have always wondered the story behind someone saving the entire box all of these years.

Chris--I knew you'd chase Ruth hard. Congratulations on a great pick-up! You're going to have to sell lots-o'-cards in Cleveland. Ha-ha-ha!

Cheers,
Mike

Love that Red Sun! Studying them, getting to know them, and beginning to appreciate how tough that card is!

Could someone explain to me how to 'grab' a pic of the card I won?

Thanks

Right click on the picture on the website and click "Copy link address". Then come to Net54, start a post and click the Picture button (mountain with a yellow background icon), then right-click and paste the address into the box. That will create the image.

Thank John...I just knew a Tech Man would know.

The only card I bid on:

I'm in trouble if the card is the same size as the image below.

IMO, I overpaid, but I can't seem to resist them...its not like I going to collect the entire set especially since one of our members is not willing to part will his Frank Seele. Oh, well, this is number eight...let the 'set builders' come to me!
