March Pickups
Starting off March with an underrated (and historically significant) Hall of Famer. Glad to add his RC to my collection.

Nice Doby.
I picked this up at my LCS yesterday, so techincally a February pickup, but we've got a new thread so what the hey. 1956T Warren Spahn in NM condition (except for a little tape). The scan would have come out better if I took the card out of the screwdown, but that lucite was part of the excellent deal. |
Another nice ‘67 mail day:

Pick Up
Really happy to have landed the Mantle...works great with my 1952 Topps set. Presents very well for a PSA 1 in my opinion. Thanks guys.
|
Congrats Ethan that’s awesome. Well done.
|
Wow, heck of a start to March...
Great Mantle and John those two 67's are on my short list right now! :) Great cards! (JEALOUS) Down to only needing 10 cards for my 1964 Topps set...got these two in the mail today (with a couple of high number RC cards). The Mantle is a little OC but sharp corners and is an upgrade. 10 more! https://i.ibb.co/H4Bdgn4/64-Mantle.jpg https://i.ibb.co/Pz9tRsL/64-Ernie.jpg The Larry Doby is amazing as well...I love the couple of cards I have of his...classics! |

Congrats. :) |
Congrats on the 52 Mick! That’s Huuuge considering today’s prices.
Also very nice sharp looking Doby! I kinda like the Green SGC label with this card :D https://photos.smugmug.com/Willie-Ma...4D1FDAB-XL.jpg |

A few folks asked if I would share better photos. Sorry for the re-post...some glare and shadows, but hopefully these are better.
Go Red Sox! Ethan |
Love seeing the '67s keep coming in. Such a great looking set, John. And that's a really nice Reggie, Ed!
This arrived today. I've never been a huge fan of the 52 Bowman set, but I think this card has terrific art. Looks more like the '51 set, IMO. Minnie Minoso rookie card, and under $70. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a24a0e17_z.jpg |

The "54" off to another strong start, keep them coming guys. Nice looking Minny there Sir. Picked up this 1952 Berk Ross Willie Mays last week. Trying to get some early cards of his before they`re just too far out of reach.

Wow Hugh, the centering on that is great! Such a tough issue to find well centered.

56T Reese
2 Attachment(s)
Has anyone else noticed that post-war cards have become pricey? Every time I bid on a Jackie Robinson or Willie Mays card, I'm like the 27th under-bidder. Here's a Reese, one of the few cards I've won on eBay in the last couple of months.

2 Attachment(s)
I picked up a 56T Berra and Robinson in 2016. The Robinson is an sgc 86 and I paid $406 including the BP. A Robinson SGC 86 just sold for $3827. The Berra is worth about 20% more than I paid...I want to buy a 52T Mays, but I just can't hit the buy button at today's prices.
|
Ed, that is a nice Jackson rookie. Those are very hard to find centered as well as yours.

Not exactly new pickups...
Not exactly new pickups, but I haven't seen these since I sent them off to PSA in July.
Happy to have these four hall of famers back https://i.imgur.com/0bosx9cl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/FpaJQKUl.jpg |

Thanks, Matthew, I'm glad I managed to win the Reese. I agree that the 52 Doby is a nice card. I have a low grade example and need to upgrade. Here was a nice one that I was thinking about bidding on the other day. Other than the border chip, it was a blazer.

Great pickups everyone. Love looking at people's purchases/trades. I got this today at my LCS out of a $1 box. Didn't know anything about it, but I knew it looked old (they had other teams as well like Yankees, Reds, Red Sox, etc, but this is the only one I picked up).
Anyway, I think it's a 1961 Fleer Double Bubble, although Beckett doesn't list that brand when typing in 1961 Fleer. So not sure. But still a cool find, especially for $1. https://i.imgur.com/Pw2tXPm.jpg?1 |

Speaking of early integrators, these three have arrived in the past few days. The Paige speaks for itself, of course, but let's focus on the Doby and the Irvin for a minute. Such beautiful cards. Irvin has that classic early/mid-20th century follow-through pose from when hitters were taught to "swing down on the ball" and lunge out onto their front foot. A lot of Goudeys and earlier cards have that same pose.
The Doby...what amazing, vivid colors. It's odd, because Topps apparently kept the Cleveland color scheme and cap in the head shot, while the background shot and the team designation reflected his trade to the White Sox. The card is definitely better for it, though - the red and blue add so much. |

My recent plan is to purchase nice raw Mantle and save them for a 'rainy day'- at which time, I would hope to get them graded accurately and resell them for a profit.
These first four are still in transit: Attachment 444640Attachment 444641 Attachment 444643Attachment 444644 These two have arrived: Attachment 444645Attachment 444646 |

I made a few recent raw purchases of players who started in the NL and eventually made the MLB. One of my favorites- and one of the coolest cards I've never seen- was this '51 Bowman Sam Jethroe. The stance, the colors... the art is great. I know Sam was a switch hitter, but his hands are holding the bat "backwards" on this card. Anyone seen the original photo this is from (or any photo of him batting right-handed)? I know when batting lefty he held the bat normally. Unless this is supposed to be the follow-thru from a lefthanded swing? Hmm...
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a8e669f5_z.jpg |
Yeah, I think it’s the downward-plane, front-footed follow through shot, like the Irvin above.
|
Great looking card!! 👍

Early delivery. Per my tracking, this guy wasn’t supposed to show up until Wednesday. But I guess like Robert himself, this card was “rapid”: [emoji851]

Hell, maybe the centering isn't for everyone, but I have always adored this card due to the strange mystique surrounding its rareness (a short-printed card - with a huge number of them found 'checked' - in a set that had a very short shelf-life). Sort of my own personal 'Cardboard Bigfoot,' as I love catching even a glimpse of one...

1952 Topps
2 Attachment(s)
Needed this guy for my set. 1952 Topps = 405/407. Likely the coolest card that I have ever owned. Love everything about it...the player, the condition, the color, the set...love it! 😊
|
NICE Jackie!!! I hope one day I will own that card...
Darren...count me in as a lover of the 63 Fleer Checklist...I've owned a couple over the years and my current card has light pencil markings and soft corners, and I love it. BTW...the reprints have "Printed in CSA" on the back at the bottom right, and the real cards have "Printed in USA". Amazing to see just how many reprints are on ebay at any given time aged to look old. It's one of the better reprints out there (I bought a mint one for whatever reason that sits next to my original)... John...LOVE the Bob Feller! After my 60's are complete I am going to finish up my 58 Topps and begin the 55 Bowman...I've always loved those TV cards... |

Went on a bender this weekend...added to my SGC run of Hank Aaron's and Harmon Killebrews...here are a couple of Aarons. Both solid for 2's...I just looked for cards with no creases. Both have not even a wrinkle...
https://i.ibb.co/ZKjY2jJ/SGC-Aaron.jpg https://i.ibb.co/kXgY9tL/SGC-Aaron-55.jpg |
Getting so close to finishing out the 60s I can smell it...:)
Down to 5848/5989 base cards, or 98%...needing 141. Only need 1 Mantle (63), 1 HOF rookie (63, Stargell) and I see the light on the 62 and 67 high numbers (picked up a ton this weekend). Here are a couple of cards I've owned previously...used to have an SGC 5 Rose...prices have changed just a bit, didn't know if anyone knew that...haha...so a 4 will have to do. I was hoping for a 5 in my Carew Rookie but couldn't pass up the deal on this one. The Carew will be "freed"...the Rose will not...it will be the only graded card for my set run due to the high amount of reprints/counterfits. I have one of those counterfit Rose cards for my binder...can't have a hole! :) https://i.ibb.co/G2SmRDS/SGC-Rose.jpg https://i.ibb.co/2N8FtPP/SGC-Carew.png The Rose fits with my set standards...I need crease free cards above all else...soft corners are ok but has to be centered...OC is OK (gotta have border showing) if the corners are crisp. Everyone has their standards, those are mine... |

63 Fleer Checklist
Scrolled through the "Sold" on Ebay and saw this one that sold for $175... https://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-Baseba...p2047675.l2557 Sucks...you can see on the back scan "Printed in CSA"...total reprint...someone got hosed. Edit to add another reprint that sold for $145...hosed again...at least this person got free shipping... https://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-FLEER-...p2047675.l2557 |

Glad your guys are good...phew... Yeah, in hand it's a no brainer...feels like a 2021 Topps card, one of the chrome 52 replicas if you know what I mean. Same thickness and feel. Troy...I saw that Eddie, that's a hell of a card...tough to find that centered! Classic Minoso... |

I've been wanting a well-centered 68 Ryan for a while. With how much prices have gone up, I probably should've gotten one a few years ago. (Purchased right here on the B/S/T board!)
https://i.imgur.com/q3rsGuR.jpeg |
Anyone who has collected these 63 Fleer knows how poorly centered they tend to be. This card especially...I might see 1-2 cards each year like this. I've been outbid on it about 10 times over the past few years, so I was thrilled to overpay a little for this example. When I got it in hand, I really think the grader must've been having a rough day. IMO, it wouldn't look out of place in in an 8 or 8.5 holder.
(Also, this bring me to 18 out of 24 on my Brooks set.) https://i.imgur.com/127HMBE.jpg |

Add me to the list of people that hadn't heard about these reprints. At least by putting "Printed In CSA" on the back they made them easy to spot. |
If you think about it, Printed In CSA is actually pretty amusing. A fake card printed in a non-existent country. Seems like the counterfeiters decided to have some fun.
|
Due to "life issues", my pickups have been virtually non-existent for months.
Perusing Ebay, I came across this one, and for the grade and price, the eye appeal really floored me. Not having any Frank Robinson cards, I had to have it. Worked out a deal, and extremely happy with it. The colors are great in hand, and the clarity is very strong for '57s, which can have a multitude of problems. That said, it does have a slight wrinkle on the front only, which you can barely see at the exact right angle and light. https://i.imgur.com/tzD5YpRl.jpg This is just a cell phone snap, so excuse the cell phone and back lighting reflections, but you should get the idea. Happy to own this one now and add it in to my collection. |

Over paid for it, but what else is new for me?
|
Legend says that when US Grant accepted Lee's sword at Appomattox Court House, he gave him a pack of unopened baseball cards to help ease his loss.
|
Printed in CSA would date the card to around the 1860's. So, the conversation should probably be moved over to the pre-WW2 chat group :). When I started collecting cards I picked up one of the fleer checklists mixed in a large lot. Not knowing how scarce it was, I gave it to my daughter with some junk cards to sell at a yard sale. She was thrilled to get $10 for the goofy looking thing. Of course I had to pick one up later in life for a bit more $. Just one of a handful of oops moments. She had a blast selling those cards though.
