1911 - E94 George Close Candy Cards
This is my only one for now but there will probably be more in the future. Anyone else like the Close cards?

George Close's card offering of 1911 is one of my favorite sets, the imagery, quality of the cardstock, and printing puts the set well above many sets of the era. And you can't beat the color saturation. A Candy card set should look like a bowl of lifesavers and with 7 different background colors the E94 hits all the marks.

I’m an e93 collector and that’s mostly because I can’t afford e94. E94 are the best looking cards in the hobby in my humble opinion.

Pete it is blue like the Evers but they look grey because of my crappy scanning abilities...Jerry

Thanks for sharing Jerry, fantastic cards, especially the "floating ball Lajoie at dusk"

Leon knew he would trigger the E94 guys with this thread, it's such a special set. Wouldn't be complete without Tbob weighing in, 3 short of a Master is unbelievable. Some private guys on this sub who won't post that hold some pretty special E94!s, can't thank them enough for accepting a relatively new E94 collector and giving their knowledge generously.

E94 is a GREAT set. Phil, our resident aficionado, and Jerry great post.

Great cards everyone. E94 cards have always been tougher to come by and more expensive than other caramel cards, so I have never had much from this set. I believe tbob is another resident expert on this set.
For fun, here is my mystery E94-esque ghost of John McGraw card. Anson from Prewarcards.com has written a couple of articles on his site about this one and a similar Murray that he has: https://prewarcards.com/2021/07/18/b...y-of-intrigue/ https://prewarcards.com/2021/09/01/t...crap-surfaces/ Brian |

The Lajoie is one of my favorites. This one and the green Moore came from Steve Falletti's Beantown find and are likely scrap.

Sorry for the cell phone pic but here is about half of my graded E94s. It's definitely my favorite set.

Mr. Speaker says he would like to join the fun. And since we're on the lookout for orange E94's, these guys say they would more than willing to welcome their orange friend to their home.....

Hello to all! I’m glad to see so many collectors love the E94s. I’ve been enamored by them for many years. One of these days I’ll get around to scanning my (almost) master set but I’m not quite ready yet. Since I hit a brick wall on the dark green Cobb, blue Crawford and violet Lajoie, I haven’t crossed the finish line yet but I still have hopes that I’ll reach it one of these days. My other great hope is that the Vikings win a championship in my lifetime. I saw my first Viking game in 1961 at the old Met and have waited 61 years for that one.
I could write a long winded treatise on the orange E94s and bore everyone to tears but that’s a story for another day. Stay healthy and thanks for remembering me and my happy obsession with the Close cards. I will begin to enjoy my retirement once the virus slackens and I hope to see you all in Chicago next summer! Tbob. |

As a Cambridge MA resident, I'm duty bound to note George Close's place on the city's candy tour.
https://historycambridge.org/self-gu...-in-cambridge/ ...and I bet a sharp E94 Cy Young can net more than $25K these days! |

I only have one, a Cy Young. Great set though, enjoy seeing the big collections some of you have.

Great thread
Great cards everyone!!...Bob no one on this thread would be bored by a long discussion of orange E94s...Steve that is cool...when I first starting putting my set together many years I had no idea about the rarity of player/color combos...I had a mangled purple Wagner without realizing how rare it was...Jerry

Love this thread, fun to see the old school E94 guys post some of their gems. Bob, I think a lot of E94 fans here would like to hear your theory on the Oranges.
