O/T ..Do You Collect Cards From 2000 to Present?

I am curious how many of our members collect cards, or have some, from 2000 to present.

ullmandds 01-06-2022 08:08 AM

I rip some packs most years for fun...and I dabble a little in modern.

brianclat11 01-06-2022 08:11 AM

I do collect cards from some of the modern players that I really like. Joe Burrow and Mike Trout are two examples.

bnorth 01-06-2022 08:16 AM

I have a few Wade Boggs, maybe 40-50.
I have most new Topps versions of the 1952 Eddie Mathews cards.
I have the slabbed Cobb Cobb from the National.
I also have a few SGC slabbed Ted Williams cards from his estate.
Not baseball but I have a Leaf Jay North Rainbow.

I think they look really cool with all the different shiny colors. I just don't buy many.

Hirbonzig 01-06-2022 08:26 AM

I have nothing newer than 1992 after a wise dealer got me interested in the old stuff and I been very happy since.

BCauley 01-06-2022 08:28 AM

In my glacial speed of picking up cards for my collection since getting back in, I do aim to pick up a RC of any modern players that get in, or definitely will be getting in, the HoF.

I'll also occasionally go to the local card shop and pick up a few packs of whatever is cheapest, usually Topps flagship, just for the sake of opening packs. I then just send whatever was in the packs to my nephews along with a few unopened packs for them.

Cmvorce 01-06-2022 08:39 AM

I buy the Topps flagship factory set and a hand collated Topps Update set every year. Glad I do - that practice got me my 2011 Trout.

Dead-Ball-Hitter 01-06-2022 08:54 AM

Ive got several LeBron James and Luca Doncic cards. Bought David Ortiz rookie year cards from the late 90's. I try to pick up the occasional generational talent's cards. I don't "collect" the modern stuff though in the true sense of the term.

Eggoman 01-06-2022 08:57 AM

NOPE! I would struggle to even identify most cards after 1992...

...AND I DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT IT!

Jim65 01-06-2022 09:00 AM

I collect Topps Heritage Mets.

parkerj33 01-06-2022 09:02 AM

Yes, Topps Heritage...Full Master runs including refractors and all HOF autos.

yanksfan09 01-06-2022 09:14 AM

I voted yes but wouldn’t say I actively collect it. I buy occasional packs to open with kids and buy the occasional key rookies of modern players I like but on a very limited basis. 99% of hobby $ goes to vintage/pre war.

jchcollins 01-06-2022 09:24 AM

I occasionally add some modern Cubs for a diversion, but 95% of what I do is vintage. I also like the Topps Archives type things, and "cards that never were" creations. They don't scratch the itch like real vintage cards, but can be a nice and super cheap alternative when you are bored and sick of spending real money.

Prince Hal 01-06-2022 09:36 AM

I really enjoy the Heritage product. Current players on vintage board and designs!

Natswin2019 01-06-2022 09:45 AM

I'd say the vast majority of my collection is Post 2000 as I started collecting when i was like 9/10/11 or so when my uncle gave me a lot of cards and my parents started buying me packs. Since I re started collecting in 2020, Ive bought a hobby box or 2 of each series(1,2 and update) of flagship and then a couple of blasters of Topps gypsy queen.

I don't have any fancy modern cards but like to buy them just to stay connected to the players I get to watch every day. I plan to keep in this way, opening a few boxes of flagship and Topps gypsy queen to have something cheap and fun to open and then spend most of my money of vinatge.

darwinbulldog 01-06-2022 09:54 AM

A little. I'd guess it's no more than 5% of my collection.

bigfanNY 01-06-2022 09:57 AM

Like a couple others have posted I do have a small Mike Trout collection. I collect 500HR items and some are post 2000. But most of my real money purchases are pre world war 2 cards and Memorabilia. As a sports fan I have Colts 76ers and Devils items and some are post 2000 as well. But Baseball my collecting passion is pre 1910.

darkhorse9 01-06-2022 09:59 AM

Only a complete set of Yopps to keep my run from 1951 on complete

I buy post 2000 all the time. There is a financial component to it. I have been flipping modern guys for a few years now. I'm in no way a big timer. Only making maybe a few hundred bucks a year, I swim in the low end of the financial pool. But it is fun to speculate on guys and follow them throughout the year and see how it turns out. Keeps me connected to the game in a way.

I have a couple High end cut auto's from Flawless and Sterling,a few very nice jersey/patches for various products, but to say I still collect modern is a bit of a stretch. That being said , I do bust a Walmart box every few weeks, just for the fun of it.

Frank A 01-06-2022 10:08 AM

With price of cards going sky high, I decided in the spring of 2020 to pick up a few modern cards. Ohtani, Guerrero, Tatis, and Acuna. Have bought some auto cards of these also. Fun to open some packs again, but I still like the vintage cards better.

KMayUSA6060 01-06-2022 10:18 AM

The Hall of Fame project requires modern Hall of Famers' RCs. I also have a huge Jim Thome PC, and collect Cleveland Indians occasionally.

I collect several current players, including the great YORDAN

jayshum 01-06-2022 10:44 AM

I buy the basic Topps set and the Topps Heritage set every year.

LEHR 01-06-2022 10:53 AM

I voted yes.

I mostly just stash a few unopened boxes every year and occasionally rip a few as I still enjoy opened packs. I definitely stash more boxes than I open though.

pawpawdiv9 01-06-2022 11:02 AM

i do it all of the nookie (ripping).

Exactly as above but mostly hockey players Young Gun's cards or similar from other manu's. (RC's)

I have a few post 2000 baseball cards that were purchased, and have only ripped an occasional hockey pack here and there when I can find them.

Exhibitman 01-06-2022 01:00 PM

I will pick up some rookies opportunistically. It sometimes pays off (Trout) and sometimes doesn't (Cano). I also bust packs and boxes occasionally if I like the set. Besides the 2020 Heritage (1971 Topps, which I love) the only one I've really done much with is 2019 Topps, which I think is a really nice design. I bought and busted a lot of Walgreens retail boxes for the yellow bordered inserts. Base modern cards are basically a waste of money compared to the box break costs but are very attractive cards:

I used to collect Topps & Bowman & their side issues, up to 2000. Looking back, I wished I had spent that $$ on T206 HOF or rare backs.

I'm very surprised how close this Poll is, considering it's a Vintage page.

wdwfan 01-06-2022 01:26 PM

I collect the newer Rangers, and also have a few Astros as far as collecting. But I have lots and lots of modern stuff simply because I buy collections and most are of modern cards. However, I dont' keep much of the modern stuff outside of Astros and Rangers (I run a booth at an antique store, and I sell Rangers and Astros in there). I bust packs to build a Topps Flagship set every year (Series 1, 2 and Update) then try and trade off any extras for Rangers or Astros I don't have or put them into my piles/boxes of stuff to sale. Pretty much everything modern I pick up (outside of Rangers and a few Astros) in collections will go into my piles of stuff to sale (inserts, colors, SPs sorted by team, and base, no matter if RCs or other, sorted by brand).

Yeah, I see your point, but at the end of the day, all of us on Net54 are card collectors. Most of us probably PREFER vintage, but that doesn't mean it's not ALSO fun to rip open some packs, or buy cards of guys we can currently watch in person and on TV.

I'll bet some of those said they don't buy modern cards probably secretly still open a pack or two. They just don't want to admit to owning the "shiny stuff" :)

z28jd 01-06-2022 01:32 PM

I buy random Pittsburgh Pirates cards, but almost everything is a throwback design. I have bought all of the Pirates in the Living Set, but I have no other Living Set cards.

RCMcKenzie 01-06-2022 05:05 PM

I voted no. I may have a base Altuve that I paid $1 for, but that's about it.

I consider post 1980's card collecting to be a completely different hobby, like concert posters or Welcome Back, Kotter lunch boxes.

Yes but only one. Playing the long game with it.

Rich Falvo 01-06-2022 07:36 PM

I’ve got a Mookie Betts rookie and I get Mike Trout’s base Topps flagship, Heritage, Archives, Update, and Bowman cards every year.

butchie_t 01-06-2022 07:42 PM

I thought I would complete Topps sets to when they stop producing them. But upon reflection and seeing the ungodly cost for little in return between 2000 and current day sets, I am stopping at 2000.

I am gonna get rid of my Donruss, Fleer, Bowman, Score, and Upper Deck runs and just focus on the Topps run I have now. 69 - 2000.

So if anyone is reading this and is looking for the above sets between 88 - 97. We can talk needs if you would like.

Cheers,

B. T.

Peter_Spaeth 01-06-2022 07:57 PM

Once I am confident someone is likely to make the HOF, I will buy their RC whatever year it is. There are lots of great modern cards IMO including Heritage and similar issues if you don't like the look.

kkkkandp 01-06-2022 07:59 PM

Generally speaking, I do not collect anything past 1900. I have a few things, but not anything like current rookie cards and such.

You're missing a hell of a game if you don't dabble in modern. The modern sets (some) offer beautiful artwork and designs and great pictures of great players.
I am by no means a fan of modern cards but I'd not consider my collection to be complete without a nice Ichiro or Kershaw card, or other HOFers from the era. i try to get them signed:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...e/Halladay.jpg

I too will pick up RCs of guys I think have chance at the HOF. I picked up a couple of Buster Posey RCs last year because his numbers are better than several HOF catchers and they sell for very little.

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...an%20Posey.jpg

I'll even pick up some of the modern art cards if I like the way they look:

Some post 2000.

Tere1071 01-06-2022 09:55 PM

When I returned to collecting after a 20-year hiatus in 2012 I began collecting Topps Heritage, Allen & Ginter, 2007-2009 Goudey, UD 2003 Play Ball, and some other miscellaneous Topps sets. In late 2009 I rediscovered vintage cards and now virtually all of my post-2000 cards are gone. I still have a few Heritage cards and the UD Play Ball sets for sale. I am keeping the Heritage card sets given out at the National Convention and the Heritage 3 card panels, however, because I like them.

Phil aka Tere1071

Working on a 1970 Topps Baseball set
Would like to add the 1969 Topps Stamps, 1970 Posters and Scratch-offs, 1971 Coins, 1973, and 1974 Topps Baseball card sets to the collection
Upgrade my 1953 Bowman Color, 1971, 72, and 75 sets.

I must be old - nookie used to be something completely different.
I bought a 2000 set since it’s my youngest son’s birth year, but I really have no interest in anything after 1970.

babraham 01-06-2022 11:34 PM

I don't have anything in my collection past 1986. :)

BobC 01-07-2022 12:45 AM

I'd buy a box/pack or two every so often in the early '00s to open up, really no complete sets to work on though. Stuff like Topps Allen & Ginter, or SP Legendary. Think the most recent post 2000 card I'd specifically purchased was a raw, 2012 autographed Bowman Sterling rookie/prospect card of Frankie Lindor. Wish he would have stayed with Cleveland.

I do have a collection going of all the autographed and game used cards from the 2002 Topps 206, and the 2003 Topps 205 sets. In fact, I'm only shy a single game used card from the 206 set, and I'll have that one complete. Been looking for that last card since 2002, but only seen one for sale in all that time, but asking a ridiculous BIN price no one in their right mind would ever pay.

And the Topps 206 and Topps 205 set buyback cards are pretty cool as well.

Agreed. I have nothing post 1990, and I've contemplated moving late 80's stuff just to lighten the load. I wouldn't even know where to start to collect modern.

GoldenAge50s 01-07-2022 04:45 AM

I voted NO even tho I did buy some packs & boxes in the early 2000's, but I certainly don't go looking for them to complete or make sets!!

My OLDER brother is 63 and he STILL collects Modern, but NOT vintage. I DO appreciate some of the Modern stuff, but I HATE the contrived rarities and scarcities, etc.

I'm happy to stay in my pre-War lane...

Just saying...
