Your Favorite Memorabilia Pick Up of 2016
5 Attachment(s)
Less than a month left in the year time to fire up the 2016 Favorite Pick Up thread. Let's see what you got!
I picked up a lot of stuff this year, but I think by far my favorite is this George Sosnak Lincoln Chiefs ball. |

For me it is a tie between 2 items I bought from fellow member Tony Quinn. I got an awesome Wade Boggs autographed bat and a autographed program from the 1970 Northern League Cubs that played it the town I live in. They are not just the best from this year but all-time favorites.

Always tough to choose...
For my Nolan Ryan collection: The backlit Starter brand advertising sign. For my Vander Meer collection: The showcase that I purchased for $65 that allows me to properly display my Vandy 1938 collection and the 1938 vintage signed Goldsmith ball with provenance. For my no-hitter ticket collection: The vintage signed Ed Head no-hitter ticket from 1946. Happy holidays to everyone on net54! :) |
My God that Vander Meer ball is fantastic!

While not technically a gamer, this jersey was given to Whitey from Joe D.; who wore it at the Yankees fantasy camp in the mid 1980s.
For me, pretty much the ultimate capstone of my Joe collection (mostly because a real gamer is waaaaaaaayyyy out of my price range! Lol.) |
Vandy
For my Vander Meer collection:
The showcase that I purchased for $65 that allows me to properly display my Vandy 1938 collection and the 1938 vintage signed Goldsmith ball with provenance. Scott, That Vandy glove and box have to be one of the most striking display combinations I have seen in a very long time. Dave Grob |
Great items guys. Probably this big ole' thing!

As a ticket collector I knocked off two TOUGH 500 HR Club stubs. Hank Aaron and Mel Ott (Thanks Scott)
And also was able to finally make a deal on Bob Feller's High School ring. (thanks Charlie) I had been the under bidder in the auction it was in but managed to get it a few years later. |
late 50's Roger Maris game bat...
1 Attachment(s)
I was happy to pick up this late 1950s Roger Maris game model O16 bat over the past summer. It matches factory records, but I still want to have one of the experts take a look at it.

I did not purchase an item of any note baseball-wise this year. However, more generally, it was my best year of collecting sports memorabilia ever - and my main collecting habit is soccer.
Although not my favourite pick-up of the year, the below is my favourite American-related memorabilia. All 4 items pictured relate to the same soccer game - an exhibition game between the New York Cosmos and a World All-Stars XI in 1978 which was Johan Cruyff's first game for the Cosmos. The ball is the match ball autographed by the World All-Stars XI side. The jerseys are (orange) match-worn goalkeeper shirt by Bailey for World All-Stars, match-worn number 10 shirt by Rivelino who scored one of the World All-Stars goals in a 2-2 result and, finally, the green "second" shirt, number 30, for Johan Cruyff. He, and the Cosmos, wore white so this ended up being unworn. http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/a...psmcnrlikx.jpg |
ignoring any cabinets or photos, I'd have to go with this 1949 Birmingham Black Barons Team Calendar w/ Mr. Mays seated in the front row with his beaming smile - about what mine looked like after I picked it up:

Aesthetically, it has to be this 19th century tiger maple bat. It's the most beautiful bat I have seen. Historically, it would be this 5/1871 scorecard from the first days of the National Association.
If anyone knows how to increase the size of my scans, I would appreciate the help. Net54 creates a problem for me with my scans. |

It took until the end of the year, but finally was able to scratch an item off my "Top 10 Want List"...I've been after this program for a while.

John and Gary - beautiful bats! I will always have a sweet spot (pun intended :D) for baseball pieces that were functional plus aesthetically beautiful. Great choices and congrats on owning them.

Ira Thomas Types head my list of my top pieces of memorabilia that I picked up in 2016.
Picked up a 1911 Ira Thomas PE2 Diamond Gum pin in trade for some catcher postcards, and a 1913 Ira Thomas Cravat from the National. Two tough Thomas types. Patrick |

My favorite memorabilia pick-up of the year is not baseball related, either. I was very very happy to find this for sale in Italy. It's Marco Pantani's complete cycling jersey worn during the 1998 Giro (which he went on to win). He took the leader's jersey after this stage (photomatched).
|
Pantani was a bad ass. RIP, Pirate.

I don't know if this is my favorite pick-up for the year....but I'm pretty excited about it...just unpacked it a week ago...I'm still sorting it out just what I have...but I'm thinking it's one of the most important cycling broadsides extant...on either side of the pond...I found a reference to this race and learned he came in third...must have been a bad hair day...Another reference on him said Dubois came to the United States the following year after this race...along with a group of other cyclist...and raced here... Aside from being for a big name cyclist..some important aspects of the poster are that it's dated...and the race was in England, thus in English so we can read it...as opposed to being in French...Also this photo doesn't do it justice...In person it's not tan...it's a mustard yellow with black type...so a real eye catcher!! |
