Ok... its a few hours early, but I thought I'd kick this off...
I've just picked up these GQs... and another I don't have scanned yet. http://www.247hq.com/N175/N175DORGAN.jpghttp://www.247hq.com/N175/N175GUNNING.jpghttp://www.247hq.com/N175/N175KRIEG.jpg http://www.247hq.com/N175/N175KEEFE.jpghttp://www.247hq.com/N175/N175WHITNEY.jpghttp://www.247hq.com/N175/N175FARRELL.jpg |

Also, happy birthday Bill :) I actually got these two cards two days ago, but it's now July so I'll post them here. Thank you Mike Healer :D |

Greenies are "olive" with two coats, imo. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/E94Moore.jpg Napoleon, the first player to wear batting gloves! http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3.../E94LaJoie.jpg |
A Few Lefty Grove Cards.....
I have been looking for a 1936 Overland Candy Wrapper of Grove for many years... I finally found TWO! And they are different colors!
http://www.bandkgreen.net/lefty_grov...ndy_colors.jpg I also picked up a red 1931 W517 mini.... The card on the right.... http://www.bandkgreen.net/lefty_grov...ini_colors.jpg |
Brad, those wrappers are really rare. How did you find two at once?

I was looking at Eric's Gypsy Queens- they are indeed beautiful- and I see one of the labels read "salesman's sample." I've never heard of a saleman's sample before in that context. Is that labeled correctly? If it has a very thick mount wouldn't it have been cut from an advertising sign? Curious if anyone knows more about it.

Happy to add these to the stack of Hindu SL'ers...

Apparently it was acquired years ago from a Terry Knouse find. I'm told Terry is one of the foremost experts on 19th century cards and he believes that this GQ Keefe was a sample card that a salesmen traveled with, and SGC holdered it as such. It is thicker than a standard OJ or Gypsy Queen card. Personally I don't buy into the hype, I'm just happy to have the HOFer GQ card. Eric |

Beautiful Doby RC!

Thanks Eric. That explanation doesn't sound right to me, but I suppose it doesn't matter. I say it was cut down from an advertising poster. Nice piece either way.

Very nice pickups Bruce. Hope to see more in the future. |
|
Barry-You are correct; it was trimmed off an ad piece. I have a few of those. Terry had "interesting" explanations for cards he was selling.

I agree with you and Jay's comments, as I said I don't but into Terry's hype either. The designation will be gone soon enough once its crossed over to a PSA case. PSA just added the N175 set to their registry yesterday. |

Congrats Joe, the photo quality on that Watkins is superb. Glad to see you knock off a card from your want list.

You must have some "savings" savy. When I went to college, I amassed a huge debt. I wasn't even thinking of cards in the 1980's much. Wish I had. Would have been a good investment. Those cards of yours aren't cheap. |

Another for my HOF collection. Only $60 on ebay!

Eric- as Jay said, Terry does not always know the real history behind many of the pieces he has. But where did SGC get that from? They're the ones who wrote "salesman sample" on their label ( I realize you can't speak for SGC).

A few really nice pickups

Pre-war pitchers...
|
Pretty excited about this one. The card is not pre-war, but it's signed by a couple guys we all know. Great thing about this card is that it's got Doyle's signature on a card relating to the 1912 season, which he was MVP of. Smokey Joe went 34-5 that year. I wasn't aware of the Loughlin set before I bought the card.

Thanks to Net 54's own Brian T. for a great transaction! For now the Gehrig becomes the centerpiece of my 1933 Goudey set as well as my collection. Only 23 more to go!
