OT, but very important for the security of your home!
I'd like to apologize to Leon upfront for this post as its not about cards, but rather about home security (and the security of our collections).
I just learned of this today...very scary indeed! Have any of you guys heard of this technique before? Are you worried now? I will probably be replacing all my locks soon with bump proof ones. http://lockbumping.org/ |
i got a dog..... hopefully his bark would chase most away.... he sounds meaner then he is.
|
bumping
It's a bit tough to learn, but yes it can be done with cheaper locks. There are some that are not susceptible to this technique.

I have a couple of "lead dispersal" units on the premesis, but they only work if me or the wife is home. Now im concerned about the security of my home when nobody is here. How do you know for sure if the current locks on my doors (8 locks in all) are bump proof already or need to be replaced?
|
well i have a dog, alarm system, .38, 9mm and a bad wife who taught me how to shoot. we installed pick proof locks 5 years ago. with that said, God bless their soul if they get in:eek:
|
Seriously?
|
yep
|
We do not have any locks on our doors...Seriously
|
Sorry, my first post came after Larry's: we appear to have been writing at the same time. Heck, I take you seriously: I ain't coming to your house uninvited.
But, guys, let's honestly get back to cards, square pieces of cardboard, remember? |

Are you in THAT safe of a town, or just have nothing worth stealing? Its hard to imagine not needing to lock your doors, but then again Im on the southside of Chicago! |
Use Medco locks can't bump them...only really works on very cheap locks.

Just a thought: Maybe ask a locksmith or security specialist?

I haven't locked my front door in four years. I don't even know where the key is.

Wait. Is that how Shoeless Joe Jackson got his nickname?

We learned this technique in locksmithing class. It's certainly possible but the report is misleading. The locks shown as the example is about the cheapest you can possibly have on a door. A saavy home owner, as most of you probably are, would never use such a lock and more likely have something like a medeco or mul-t lock. With these you will be fine.

I collect door knobs. Much too valuable to put on doors.

Thats your 3rd reply to a thread you feel is unimportant. If you truly felt that this thread doesnt belong here, you would have stated so, and then ignored it like a man. But much like my 3 year old, you keep harping on it. In fact, the thread is so good that I actually received a private message thanking me for posting this info! True story. |

Politely reminding an individual that 4 bumps per day is inconsiderate is NOT "interference". I think that Leon would agree with this completely! Interference is an act of making disparaging remarks about price, quality, or past sales prices of a card offered. Its a shame that I needed to point out the difference to you. I have always taken you to be one of the more intelligent members on this site. |
My cards are in a safety deposit box at a bank. I hope their deadbolts are secure.
|
It's easy, put guillotine blades above your doors and let it go. Why is there a hollier than tho stench about you pre-war dudes? is it middle age intitlemnetent or nerd rich guy revenge? Let it go.

My post about the loss of prairie dog habitat in the northern plains states should be appearing in the BST momentarily.

I am just waiting for him to state that the good locks cannot be found for less than $8.00 and he will be putting an offer for any and all locks at $5.00...

Keep bumping the BST posting under the guise of it being perfectly fine. It isnt. You know it, I know it, and so does everyone else. To bump a thread 4 times in a day just because a card in your original post sold is abuse. A simple "edit" to the original post works just fine. But in light of your recent financial loss, you are SO hard up to generate some cash that you have resorted to this shameful tactic. You claim that bumping a BST listing once per 24 hours is "far worse" than what you are doing? You cannot be serious! I may be new to collecting vintage cards, but im not new to forum ettiquette. Bumping a BST ad once every 24 hours is very standard and acceptable. Bumping it 3-4 times a day because a card has sold is a desperate attempt to raise cash!;) |

Do yourself a favor this time and don't try to futilely argue the point. |

Fear tactics work on people
These are the kinds of "news" items that my 85 year old grandmother hears about in the local Brevard County rag and then worries that her family isn't safe. So she'll send out an email to everyone in the family warning them of the perils of locks on the front door.... or con artists making house calls..... or misleading telemarketers.... or whatever.....
The last place for these kinds of alarmist (pun intended) notes is on a vintage baseball card forum. Save them for the spam emails you like to forward to your "friends." |

bumping posts
Bumping a BST post on this board, every 24 hours, is not acceptable. It might be elsewhere but not here. I suggest an email to me if there are questions or you can post here. Every several days (read at least 4-5) is ok but the edit feature should be used more often. If you have a BST post, then several days later add something else to sell (in that post) then it would be ok.
Interference in a BST post is defined by any post that doesn't have to do with an item being sold, however benign or informational posts can be ok. If you don't know the difference than you shouldn't post. And yes, I have occasionally broken a rule too, but not very often and it's when a thread is already derailed. I still shouldn't do it though. |

Santa=Satan? Both wear red and have never been in the same room at the same time! |
I leave my doors and windows open and encourage intruders.
|
Once again, I'll post about how every valuable collection should be locked up in a fireproof safe that would give any thief a whole lot of trouble. A house is a very easy thing to get into, and not just through the door, but any window, garage, etc.

all Chicago was doing was making people aware of a potential problem and security issue. He shouldn't be given a hard time for that regardless of how you feel about him or what else he has done. He meant no harm, just provided information.
If you knew about this potential risk beforehand, then skip to the next thread. I am personally glad he posted this because i had never heard of it before. How many of you have ever heard of FLEXISPY? It is a security risk to your cell phone. thanks Chicago. |
thanks for bringing this to my attention Chicago206. I had heard about this technique in high school and had totally forgotten about it. Getting my safe from my Dad's house this weekend so I can store my best cards in it.
