I always thought these banners were screen printed. They were not. Most likely they were manufactured by a company called Superior Hand Blocked Textile Co. As their name suggests, they printed these banners on 100% woven cotton twill using the hand block printing method. Hand block printing involves carving a design onto a block and stamping it onto the fabric.

Superior made others similar novelty items for the Dodgers; and, most likely, other teams. I believe they also manufactured a popular item known as the "crying towel" which featured crying mascots representing all of the AL and NL teams.

Would love to find the "War Cry Towel". Just another item to add to the "They could never make it today" list.

I don’t believe there’s a Giants crying towel. Giants fans don’t cry.

I used to have all 3 towels displayed along with my pennants. And it was ok until my granddaughters learned to read and I had to try and tell them why it was ok to use terms like "Moider", "Hang", "Poison" and "Kill" players on the other teams. So I sold the War Cry towel to a local collector who is trying to obtain every items ever offered in the Dodgers mail order catalogs. I thought that was nuts, but he actually has most of the items. The War Cry towel was one he was never able to find, so he was happy to get mine. Oddly, I still have the other 2 towels which are quite similar in word usage still on display, I just moved them into a corner.

I like the idea of trying to get everything from a team’s mail order Golden Age, which for the Dodgers and Giants, I would put at 1958-68. I’ve seen 5 for $6 Weirdo bobbing heads in a Dodgers catalog. Worth $6-7000, today. Does your buddy have those?

Yes Rob, he has all the Weirdos and several walls displaying bobbleheads. It is interesting what he is missing, things like 12" cloth tall dolls, made in Japan, that came in sets of four. He has two, but missing the batter and catcher. He also needs the exceedingly rare 1963 Sandy Koufax Strike-out game, the top of which was made with thin cardboard and is almost always found in bad shape if at all. I have a really nice one which he wants, but I am holding on to it for now.

BTW, I have an extra 1965 Murder the Minnesota Twins banner if any one is looking for one. A little faded, which is pretty normal for these 1965 banners. The 1963 banner is much more available is great condition as there was a warehouse find of these about twenty-five years ago.

Too used to misery, no more tears remaining.

Says the guy whose team doesn't have many problems winning their division, but after that they're Mendoza line level.

Wow. You're friend has a pretty impressive collection. I struggle to find the mail order catalogs let alone all of the items sold in them.

I would try a bleach pen.

IMO...Your best bet would be to paint over it. Any attempt to erase or remove will likly make it look worse. You can get some fine tip brushes and antique white paint. Even if the white isn't perfect, it would look better than pen.
