As far as I know
[QUOTE=docpatlv;1803123]Great pickups Howard! That uncut sheet is very nice. At first I thought it was the same as the photo I picked up from you, but then I noticed it was slightly different. Any idea who issued the photo you sold me?
https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ssueGlossy.jpg It is a team issued photo. PSA doesn't grade them, but other than the couple I've owned, I don't recall seeing them around. |
Day 226
This next item is fairly common and can easily be found... Feb. 1973 Roto Magazine... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...tPressRoto.jpg ...and this next one is not so common. I wasn't even aware it existed until this year. Strange how the previous one is easy to find, yet this one issued 2 mos later is not. April 1973 Roto Magazine... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...Mag_April_.jpg |

Day 227
I have no idea where this next item was distributed, but I believe it is definitely period from 1973. It is on heavy paper stock and measures roughly 9 x 12. 1973 Memorial Sheet... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...orialSheet.jpg |

1977 (or later) Hall of Fame Pennant (Blue)... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...FPennant_1.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...tCloseup_1.jpg |
Wouldn't that be later? Whitey Ford & Mickey Mantle 1974, Ralph Kiner 1975 and Ernie Banks 1977 are on it.

I will change it to 1977 at the earliest. Thanks rats! |

1977 (or later) Hall of Fame Pennant (Green)... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...nant-Green.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...eenCloseup.jpg ***There is also a red version of this pennant that I will eventually try to add to the collection. Those are the only three colors that I have seen. If anyone can accurately date the year of issue, please let me know. |

Team issues/jay publishing
10 Attachment(s)
So, I'm getting ready to send off some team issues to PSA for grading and figured it would be a good opportunity to share them here as well. While the "price guides and PSA lump together some of the Jay photos -I have narrowed each down to specific years - both from communicating with Jack Webster who has a wealth of knowledge about these as well as owning and going through multiple full team sets. So here is the breakdown of the Jay issued photos - Some of them are identified through subtle cropping differences (1959-60,1962-1964)

1966 Sealed team photo pack

I know there are a lot of questions about the 1966-1971 color issues - while I can't resolve them all, I believe I can shed some light.

1971 team set
2 Attachment(s)
I have not seen this one around. It is similar to what PSA identifies as a 1971 set, but the coloring is much whiter. This is sealed in the original bag.

1970? 1971?
2 Attachment(s)
PSA identifies this as 1971 - It could be or possibly 1970. This is a sealed pack with no year identifier on the back.

This is likely a 1970 autograph card

Familiar images - unidentified

These have slightly different textural , size or cropping differences - I presume them to be various appearance or team issues (except the postcard - no idea there!)

Awesome resource Howard. I recall asking before but we didn't finish the discussion: your sense of why PSA will authenticate/label some of these but not others? Is it just a question of what they can know for sure, and if they are unsure about provenance then the default is to not be willing to slab at all and therefore not include in the master list?

My (not so humble) opinion is
Quote:
Read the forums for a little while and you will see the general consensus on consistency of their qualitative grading as well. I've gotten stuff back from them and just shake my head sometimes - items that are solid nrmt - come back with a 4-5 grade. For selling - they are a necessary "evil". For collecting they are a choice - I chose to work on a registry set because I got bored with so little to look for. I am not looking to get 100% complete on it. I have complete bazooka boxes from every year (but 1960) - I don't care about the panels (except 71 numbered) or singles. I will not even send in my 68 or 71 boxes as PSA will bend a flap to fit into their holder!! Why they do what they do? Because people like me keep sending them money to do it:confused::cool: |

Thanks for all the great info Howard. It is a little confusing between the Jay Photos and team issued B&Ws. Day 231 1968 Topps Managner's Dream...I really like this card, I wish Roberto appeared on more multi-player cards. https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...erqusDream.jpg |

Love the team issue and Jays! Please post again when you get them back from PSA. I think these are under appreciated, but I really like them. Is the postcard a Jim Rowe? The writing on the back looks similar to the one’s I have. |

I think that is a 1971 issue. I purchased series A and B individually in sealed packs. I later purchased the undated Blue card from a collector who was breaking up a complete set. His set did not have the Series A and B checklists. He claimed to be the original owner and that they were purchased as a complete set without the checklists. |

1969 Topps Decal... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ToppsDecal.jpg One of my favorite Topps insert sets from the 60s. I remember trading for these in junior high. I scrolled through all 70 of the pages of this thread. I did not see one of these pins posted. I purchased two Clemente pinbacks the other night. My suspicion that one was home made unfortunately was confirmed on the memorabilia side. This one looks right to me. However I was posting it here to determine if anyone has seen another of these pins. Thanks!

Sorry about the pins Mike, hope you aren't out too much. If you bought them off of eBay, you can probably get a refund. There are a lot of fantasy pins of Roberto out there. They really didn't issue a lot of pins of him during his playing days.
Day 253 I don't go to many shows these days. But back when there were small card shows every weekend, a seller had a box full of magazines. I found these and they look like they were right off the newsstand. 1972 Baseball Yearbooks... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...llYearbook.jpg |

The numbered 1971 bazooka were never issued as a full box, full of gum that you could buy at the grocery store. They were sheets cut up.. by someone... probably at Topps along time ago.
The numbered cards are on a white card stock, while the unnumbered "official release" is on grey card stock. Numbered panels can also be found... Very rare to find the 3 card panel. |

Day 256 When I first saw this next item, I immediately noticed the color & clarity of the photo. When I compared it to the photo above, you can really tell the difference. I do believe that both were issued in the same time frame, but maybe the matted one was in a first print run and then later they printed more of a slightly lesser quality. I'll post a side by side to show the difference. The photo on the right is the more common variation. I believe the photo on the left was part of a small booklet (which Howard made reference to earlier), mine has been cut from that I believe. 1970s Matted photo... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...eawayMount.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...wayMountBk.jpg Side by side comparison photo... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...Comparison.jpg |
