As it is, I went to a show today and managed to knock off 4 out of the 7 cards I need to finish my 1960 set. And, thank God for small favors, only 1 of the 3 remaining cards is a Mantle. |

It has been a while but I am 54 cards closer to finishing my 1972 Topps Baseball set as of today.

Spent the day Sunday at Chantilly, the biggest show I usually attend any given year. Picked up a couple of '52s, a dozen '54 Bowman, a handful of '64s including Gibson (which was a tough 6th series card), four '59 Fleer Ted Williams and a small stack of 1980 Topps.
Current standing at: '52 Topps Low numbers: 299/310 '54 Bowman: 194/225 '59 Fleer Ted Williams: 58/80 '64 Topps: 577/585 '80 Topps: 694/728 I can taste the finish line on these, except for the '52 Mays. After knocking these out though, I'm going to pause the set building and concentrate on slimming down the collection. |

Down to 1 more for a 1963 Fleer set.....# 57 Elroy Face.
I know check ebay......but I refuse to win a single card, pay $4.50 shipping just to have it arrive in a PWE. Bob |
Robert- you are a man of great patience. I think if I was down to one I would not be able to contain myself. Good luck on wrapping up that set. One of my favorites

My 1963 Fleer baseball set is complete thanks to bobbbcards for the last card (Elroy Face) I needed!
WooHoo! Bob |
So, what’s the next project Bob ?
|
I don't know. maybe you guys can help with suggestions.
My budget does not allow for anything expensive which was part of why I went with the 63 Fleer. I like doing smaller sets like this one. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bob |
Topps 1964 Supers ? Small set, affordable, great looking, and lots of star power
|
The 2 sets I would love to do are the 1964 Topps Stand Ups and the 1971 Greatest Moments. Both out of my price range.
However, the 1964 Topps Supers are a possibility. |
Still need 2 cards to finish my 61 Topps baseball set. Show in town tomorrow, hopefully I'll find them.
Congrats on the 63 Fleer set. |
I know I've posted here a couple of times bout my 1958 Topps set. But I've got some bad news this time. I am 1 card away from finishing, however, I've got to give the set up and sell it.
We were informed last week while on vacation in Disney World that my wife's job had been terminated. Long story, but they decided to terminate her instead of paying her the 2 weeks of vacation time she was due. So she's out of a job right now at Christmas time, so I'm having to sell my starter set (I've already got it listed in the BST for $965, but it surprisingly hasn't drawn a bit of interest to this point). I'm hoping it sells pretty quickly. I guess if she can find a new job fairly quickly that I won't have to sell and can, maybe, finish it. But for now, I've got to stop building my 1958 Topps set and let it go. Sad news as I hate being so close and not being able to finish. |
I finished series 3 of my 1972 Topps set this evening. Onto series 4, 5, & 6 now. I am sitting at 593/799. That includes the variations that I know about.
|
Picked up Grady Hatton, George Metkovich, and Bob Lemon to put me at 272/310 of the 1952 Topps low number set. The only "big" names remaining are Phil Cavaretta, Billy Loes, and Johnny Sain. The majority of the rest are the short prints between 260-280. Chipping away at it!

I first put this set together in the late 80's/early 90's. Then my son put it together several years ago as a first foray into vintage cards. Since then, he and I have been working on a signed set and am down to three cards - Clemente, Farrell and Mays. Been holding steady at -3 for a while now. |
Just picked up my last card for my 1978 graded set (Ruppert Jones). :)
|
After picking up a large lot from Wheatland Auction, I'm down to just 3 cards to complete the 1971 Topps Greatest Moments set - Perez, Bench and Murcer.
|
Picked up the 1955 and 1956 Yankee team cards to "finish" my "set" of 1947-66 Exhibit cards. I've got all the confirmed checklisted cards, which is where I'm stopping. I'm not going for sepia/b&w variations or the differences in the lengths of the Printed in USA or Made in USA legends like whiteymet.
|
I made a lot of progress on 1959 Topps on Black Friday/Cyber Monday on COMC. I don't have many hall of famers, but I'm at 27/66 of the high numbers.
1959 Topps 213/572 37.2% |

Completed the 1972 set, which means I have the Topps run from 1970 to present day finished. On to the 60s!
|
Congrats on the 72 set. I like the way all of the binders are lined up. Very nice.
|
Working on the 1967 Topps set here, having fun and cracked the big 2 of 4 with pickups with Carew rc and Robinson. 48 more needed…….
|
I managed to win this card in last nights The Collector's Connection auction.
https://thecollectorconnection.com/i...71_1_48975.jpg It was the final card I needed to finish my 1968 set. I started working '68 about 4 years ago. Two years ago, I needed 6 to finish the set and added 4 over the course of the subsequent year. So, for the last year, I have needed two to finish. I managed to win the Lou Brock a few weeks back with Greg Morris, leaving just the Ryan RC. I've really struggled with Ryan because $300-$400 is the upper end of what I can afford and this card consistently sold for more than that. Obviously, the card has some serious fading on the left hand side, but that doesn't bother me since the condition otherwise is right where I would want it. Now, on to 1960, where I only need 2 to finish, and 1965, where I am 21 cards short of the full set. |
I wouldn't have even realized it was faded. Look at those corners!!! Suh-weet!!!!

(re)completed 1957 set!
I had a complete '57 set until I sold a PSA 4 Ted WIlliams to a Net 54 member back in April. Figured I'd upgrade quickly, but it's taken until now to find a card I liked.
Lesson I keep having to learn while upgrading - don't sell the card I have until the replacement is in hand :D Anyhow, here's the new Williams along with a few of my favorites from the set. So my son and I walk into one of the local card shops to look at a few cards that my son was interested. The owner had just purchased a collection. My son picks out a few from the ones set aside for him, and as we are getting ready to leave one of the guys pulls out a large box of cards that he says he needs to go through for pricing. They are more cards from the recently purchased collection. We ask if we can take a look. My son takes a hand full of cards out of the box. The first card he sees is 1961 Ernie Banks all-star card. Woo hoo I'm now down to needing 1 card to finish my 61 Topps baseball set.
It was the only 1961 Topps baseball cards in the collection purchased! |
1966 topps
It's been a 50+ yr. journey, some years being more assertive than others when I started putting together my '66 Topps set. After a little luck and kindness shown on net54 I'm down to now needing just 30 cards, all but one being a high # card.
Still searching and enjoying the process. Currently looking. |

This has been a huge year for me as I completed the 1954 Red Heart set (finished with a generous gift from a board member) and my 1964 topps set.
Even better, I completed my dream set: 1953 topps. The last card I needed was Mays and I bought it from a dealer friend at a great discount. Still, $1,100 is the most I have ever paid for a card by far. I had a couple opportunities for side jobs and my wife was encouraging of me getting at as she understands it was probably now or never. Love this thread and happy hunting |

Nice cards Irv and Anthony!
Finished my duplicate 1965 Topps set...really love this iconic set. This is the 4th time I've built this set, and have watched my brother build it twice, so lots of experience around the nuances of this one. Sitting on two of these set is also a lot of fun. While working on 2nd 60's sets I'm also upgrading my other sets to EX+, which is also fun to involve the others. Last time I built this set, Bob Uecker was the last card...this go around...Mr. Perez Rookie. My original is NRMT, so to finish out a nice VG/EX that was priced right was a-ok with me... https://i.ibb.co/BZKZy0L/65-Perez-RC.jpg |
Congrats John. I've always liked the 65 set.

down to 24 on my 53 psa 5 or better set

I went to a great card show in Milwaukee and picked up a dozen 67T high numbers, which all look about like Larry Sherry below. The dealer, who basically threw in the Ryan No Dot for me, said he bought a 67T set from Uncle Jimmy's collection, used some of the cards to upgrade his set and had the rest up for sale (which was most of them). If these were his rejects I would love to see his keepers!

Yowza!!!

I just finished my 1960 Topps set. This is my second completion in less than a month, but I don't expect to finish any other sets this year.
Here is my last card: Attachment 497239 |
I am not a set collector, but I am working on the 1951 Topps Blue Back set. I got a bunch of cards from someone whose husband died, and it seemed like he was trying to put together the set. I felt obligated to finish this journey for someone I never met.
Today the following from eBay to add to my 1951 Topps Blue Back set. These are getting harder to find and more expensive. They are not perfect and most have surface wrinkles and a few have creases, but the color is good and no paper loss. Four of these are new to my collection and two are upgrades. If anyone has extras, I would be willing to trade for them! I am at 25/52, but still need upgrades on almost all of them. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d1404634ef.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...468f080f4c.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...86575e400d.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6fc24850ba.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9267a7970e.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...20ed2dc87c.jpg Below is the Flickr of the cards I have so far. My goal is to have all of them in SGC 4 or higher grades at the end. Blue Back Album |

Took me almost five years, but I filled the final spot in my mid-grade 1952 Bowman set today. The honor went to Johnny Pesky. Here's a pic of me filling the final hole in the binder. I'll organize some pics of the "good stuff" and post them soon. Attachment 499640 |

(Case in point, page 1 in the set binder has HOFers Berra, Minoso, Reese and Robin Roberts all in the first nine cards, and Bobby Thompson also makes an appearance at card #2 with the back of his card describing the "shot heard 'round the world" as it was printed the spring after that game. Great set.) |
I'm working on a PSA graded 1960 Leaf set. I just picked up a #96 Kucks and that leave me three from finishing the set. I still need #75 Culp, #85 Stigman and #101 Noren.
|
I picked up a 74 Topps Baseball set in trade from Gorditadog over the weekend. It will need some work, but I'm happy to have it. The 70 set will hopefully come closer to completion with some possible deals in the very near future. After that, all that will need to be acquired is a 73 Topps set and upgrades for my other sets, particularly 1972.
|
I had promised myself I'd try to finally get some sets completed here in 2022, rather than always be working on so many sets at the same time that I could never seem to finish any.
Just a couple days ago got the last card I needed to finally complete my '48 Sports Thrills set. Had needed card #12, "Most Dramatic Home Run", featuring Gehrig and Ruth, for quite some time. Finally pulled the trigger on a really nice raw VG-EX+ one Gregg Morris had. Felt really good to cross that last card off my want list. |
After a couple of trades, 1977 set now at 472/660.

I've finished the '67 Topps set with the last few cards from the high numbers arriving in November/December. My procrastination on this one cost me dearly. I remember passing on Seaver rookies going for under $200 thinking I'd find better deals down the road. LOL Same for the Carew at <$100. But it's in the rear view now.
On the other side of the tracks, I put together three Philadelphia Gum football sets ('65, '66 and '67) without much fuss or bother. All since last spring. I had the '64 set done long ago so I've scratched off one hobby goal, the four Philly sets are now in one big binder along with wrapper examples from each.. |
