Show your Tobacco, Candy, Gum, Bread, etc. advertisement pieces
Not a "Tobacco, Candy, Gum, or Bakery" advertisement; nevertheless, this is cool enough post here....circa 1920's.
Discovered it hidden away in a small Antique shop today in Quakertown, PA. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...vegetables.jpg TED Z . |

Well, this ain't a Tobacco, Candy, or Gum advertisement....however, I guess we can loosely classify it as a "Bread" adv. :)
Toots Shors restaurant in mid-Manhattan was the quintessential "hang-out" for Sports celebrities (and, of course many other celebrities from 1903 to 1977). http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...Feb25x1956.jpg I'd date this gathering at Toots Shor's circa 1952 **. Nine of these 14 ballplayers started their BB careers in the deadball era. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...1956capt25.jpg Check-out the menu for that day http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...MenuP1x25x.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...MenuP2x25a.jpg ** Note......My guess as to the date of this gathering is based on the passing away of Arlie Latham in Nov 1952. Arlie was a very colorful guy. Arlie is depicted on several OLD JUDGE cards (N172). And, T206 cards (460-only series). http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...athamSGC35.jpg TED Z . |

Geeze ... these old advertising pieces are addicting! Now I have to add another item to my wantlist? <sigh> Seriously ... there are some really beautiful art pieces within this thread. I hope to one day add a pre-war advertisement display to my collection ... as a companion piece. Thanks for sharing all these!

Thanks Leon! I shouldn't have said "most" - all the EPDG boxes that I could find are paper/cardboard. I just don't know a ton about these so was trying to be careful.
It measures 6" x 4.5" x 2". The colors really look cool in the light too, almost a bit iridescent. Quote:

A Mecca Cigarette ghost sign
2 Attachment(s)
.....a faded 1910 Mecca sign painted on the side of a building on East 70th Street and York Avenue, NYC, likely a with similar consequence as the following sign.
The second sign is a Mecca Cigarette sign also painted in 1910, subsequently painted over with a Cola Cola advertisement. As the top paint wears away over time it reveals the older painting. The reappearance of a painting of an underlying image that has been painted over is called a pentimento. This Coca-Cola and Mecca pentimento is on a building on the corner of Bleeker and Carmine Streets, NYC. __________________________________________________ _____ The Homepage on this site displays samples of three collectible hobbies - it does not imply ownership of the samples. http://bcc.anaclubs.org/bb.htm |

Bob F.
neat advertising mirror but missing a few parts. I went back and forth all week about it - contacted the seller - tried to justify the retail - aesthetics - 90.00 shipping - whatever. I have a slightly earlier Duke advertising mirror with globe and wicks (also includes a tobacco insert card) made by the same company although a little "prettier" and complete. Ginter is a core of my accumulation so I was faced with a real predicament. I was fairly sure it wouldn't get a bid and I might have a shot to negotiate. You have some super advertising but didn't think of you. Curses!! ......and congratulations.
|
Quote:
that's no minor contribution! Great piece!! Brent |
Bob, I too was watching that mirror, pretty neat, similar sentiments as Henry but sometimes you just need to bite. Congrats! I suspect Henry would have been all in if it were more complete.
JC, awesome 1892 Schedule, very nice. I normally don't gravitate outside of 19th century slide and shell cigarette packs but couldn't resist a Detroit chewing tobacco by the name of "WOLVERINE". This wooden storage bin/bucket has a 10lb Series of 1875 tax stamp that was canceled in 1876. The top and bottom have clear stamps for Nevin & Mills Wolverine Tobacco, very complete, everything is present. |
Agreed
I had a suspicion pieces were missing however given the choices of owning this or nothing, I obviously chose owning it. I guess my other rationalization was that it displays pretty nicely as is and I have no issues displaying it as is.
Joe, that is a killer display piece, definitely worth stretching your collecting area! |
Hi...do you still have the Dukes Mixture crate? Great item....would you ever consider selling it? Just curious....my family has a connection with the Dukes. If not, enjoy it. Congrats. Thanks.... Tony

Some really fantastic pieces everyone! Tony as usual your collection amazes. And Bryan love that CJ sign! Where the heck did you find it? Give us some details!

Thanks AJ! It came from someone in Indiana.
I actually might end up selling it as I am finding that I only have room for a few framed items and this one might not make the cut. It is pretty fun to have discovered what is the only the third of these signs (that I have been able to track down). Quote:

Piedmont store display
1 Attachment(s)
Here is one for you NY Giants and Polo Grounds guys. Has anyone ever seen this Piedmont Cigarette store display? It is a massive 31" x 60" in size and double-sided. The other side is plain white with Piedmont Cigarettes logos and advertising for 10 and 20 count packs. The old Polo Grounds stands with the crowd is awesome.
There are slots in the piece. It looks as if something hung on it over the baseball infield portion of the advertisement. The white infield is an original part of the litho. I would really like to find out whether a rack hung on it with cigarette packs. Or was it a 3D baseball scene? If anyone has any idea, please reply!! |
