Short Prints: Elberfield, Washington, portrait, Lundgren, Chicago, and Frank Smith, Chicago and Boston. Anyone wanting to trade or sell please email me. Hi Frank,
Can you please bump me up to 204 when you have the chance. Thank you sir! |
Down to 3 remaining..
..and raw ones at that. That is what I still have in possession, not to go :) Still have a Tenney, Joss (Port) and Kleinow (Right) in SOV150. So, I think I drop off the list :(
As previously noted when I first consigned with him, my entire collection (522 - minus the big 4, + two dupes) is now in Goodwin's current auction. Lot #'s 355 to 933. Three 3's, rest graded 4-6, assortment of backs. |
Brendan,
No problem, I've got you down for 812.:D Ed, The Monster Number is an inclusive enterprise. We do not discriminate. I will however pull your threesome from the list if you are suffering from depression and anxiety. A medical note is not required.;) |

Mine just got huge, but not sure how many I'm keeping so I'll defer increasing my official number too much.
For now let's just up it to 85. |
A couple of buys from net54 members puts me over the 100 mark -- 104 not counting several dups.
|
Please bump me up to 120!

My Summit - 518
What began with a Matty ends with a Cobb after 7 years and 7 days.
Thanks to RGold for making the last card possible with probably the best Sweet Cap back in my collection. The image is clean and if you focus on Cobb's nose, you don't even see the two little white spots.:D Justifiably a high end 30 IMO. No fanfare please. The thread will continue and upgrading will as well on my part. For those behind me on the mountain, the view is good up here and well worth the effort.;) Thanks again to all who have helped since I almost fell off the wagon at 489, when this thread started. |
congrats Frank...what's next? Kiliminjaro?
|
Nice job Frank. :) Whenever you recover from your endorphin buzz you can bump me to 335.9. A slow week still produced two.
497. Kaiser Wilhelm (Hands At Chest) P150 364. Orval Overall (Hands At Waist Level) SOV460 |
Great job Frank!!
I believe that I can hear Mssrs. Demmitt and O'Hara calling from St. Louis....

Great job Frank, but I find that the journey is the best part of collecting. Now that you've reached that summit you may find that you miss the fun of collecting. Let us know if you find something new to chase. :) |
Great job Frank! Now you can go out and cut the grass.
|
Congrats Frank!
|
sadly
my monster number is now 0 :-( My Matty portrait was my last one. I succumed to the monsters wrath around 300 and change. Although I'm a 19th century guy it seemed like a good set for me to chase as it had all the elements I look for in my earlier sets - and I figured with my accumulation of tobacco as art - I should have what I consider to be the quintessential 20th century tobacco set in my story. The color and variety is astounding - lots of things that make it special. That being said - rising prices and the fact that it became like buying a commodity after a while and that I couldn't always be as descriminating as I might want to be led me to abandon the hunt. I preferred graded - especially when buying online and had to confront all the grading issues - should/could I get all the S/l players on my budget in only 40/50's etc., this pattee LOOKS so much nicer than my 60 and so on. One reason I abandoned ship was the money- I'm no whale - comfortable but no endless stream of cash and there are some expensive cards in the set. The shipping, the grading, the HOF's. Then there was the time involved. Cataloging, researching, sharing information, looking for cards. That is much of the fun of it for me even now - but nearly 20 years into the hobby and a hint away from 60 - the MONSTER just became too much - and stopped being as much fun. I'm content to not be able to get the cards I need in my 19th century sets. I wish only the best to you guys. Love the set - enjoy the chase!
|
Congrats Frank! Please mark yourself down with the uniform numbers that correspond with Joe DiMaggio, Pee Wee Reese, and Willie Stargell.
|
Great, Frank! How's the air smell up there?
|
Just hit 420 this morning. 100 more to go! All SGC50 or better.
I have been putting this set together card by card (no lots) for a little over 7 years. I originally set forward to put this set together in 10 years and I think I am still on schedule. The final 100, as I plan on getting to 520 (already have an O'Hara, St.L in SGC50). Maybe add a Magie, but not a Plank, Doyle or Wagner unless I hit the lottery. Phil |

Frank, I am new to the Monster List and relatively new to the board. I am now up to 44 cards. I would love to be added to the list.
Also, I have a new display cabinet (which oddly cost more than all the cards combined) of which I am quite proud. |
Andy, love the display....but it won't cost more than the cards for very long. :D
|
Hi Frank,
I have picked up a few this month and my Monster number is now at 17. :) Best Regards, Eric |
Hi Frank, I've decided to come out of the closet so please add me to the list. I'm at 105.
|
I guess you can move mine up also. I am at 472 now.
Oh, so how did you get top place among the 518 list. Is that just a perk since it is your thread. |
A fine man named Frank sold me a nice card named Schmidt, bringing me to 298.

Hey Frank
I'm approaching another near complete set, This one is a "hybrid" (in terms of backs). I'll stop this set at 518 cards.
Currently, I'm at 411 different T206's. This will be my 3rd set on your list....so, sign me up. Thanks, TED Z __________________________________________________ ________________________________ LOOKING for these T206 guys to complete my AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 sub-set (75 cards) AMES (hands over head)....CAMNITZ (hands over head)....CRAWFORD (bat)....DOYLE (portrait) McGRAW (portrait-cap)....McQUILLAN (bat)....TINKER (bat off)....WILTSE (portrait-cap) |
While you are adjusting the numbers, I did just reach 100. Seems like it has slowed down this summer, but 100 different since Oct. of 2012 is more than I thought I would have.

Great thread
I have a number but I havent figured it out...
My main question to Frank is why didn't you include Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back as part of the set? That would add just a little twist don't you think? |
A whopping 2 points thus far, as I just got my first two T206 cards today.
I am sure years from now I will chuckle recollecting when the Monster first bit me, and cringe thinking about how much money it cost me. :D My thanks to Doug (piedmont150) for the first two of what will be many over time. http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/6961/adph.pnghttp://img713.imageshack.us/img713/160/u1oh.png |

Update & Special Offer
Over 36,000 cards now belong to Monster Number sets.
On the main board this thread trails only the classic thriller: "E107 Breisch Williams Scarcity Poll" in total number of views. And to be honest the thread has been outviewed by the Kreindler Ooh-Aah Thread on the other side, which we recently passed in replies though. I've chatted with Graig several times and trust he will not find this characterization of his thread offensive This post is prompted though by passing that pesky MARKEL REPORT this week and by the upcoming National. Now for the Special Offer For those of you, in or going to Chicago, I will be at the Net54 dinner and available to update your Monster Numbers there. Looking forward to meeting as many folks as possible on Friday, both at the show and the dinner. Who knows........I may even be willing to sign a few items.:D:D:D |

Frank, for those of us unable to attend, can we submit items for signature, along with SASE? |

Back up to 2!
Hey! I'm back up to 2 now! After selling the set on Goodwin in early June (he will list remainder in next auction), I have two that were raw and came back from SGC (I pick them up at the National along with others).
I will have up for sale soon... *T206 Addie Joss, Portrait, SC that got a 55 (Woohoo! Bought it raw thinking a 2 or 3) * Fred Tenney, Portrait, SGC30 (bought it raw as well thinking a 4 .. oh well ) So, I am at a temporary 2 now :D |
