I'm not working on this particular set, but I LOVE checking this thread and seeing everyone else's progress. Keep up the good work, you guys! Some very cool autos.

My favorite player growing up came through for me again this year! I got the base card signed last year and sent one again as well as the all star card for my set. A great surprise/success.

This is a great thread. I am currently working on this set and I am 449/792. I am averaging about $4 a card right now. I have just started to do TTM for a lot of the players.
However, I did end up with a Ricky Wright #202; I am sending it to be authenticated. It was in a lot from a dealer here locally, I didn't even notice it, but I got a lot of 300 Cards for $2.25 per card. When I sorted them out. Ricky Wright was there.... Now we wait to authenticate. |
Went through a few boxes today. I found Brunansky, Kevin Mitchell, Mike Marshall,

Another two beauties from Donnie baseball this week. I know he only signs TTM around once a year so I have sent a card every month for the last twelve months in hopes of success. I only wish he would have signed my Yankees Team leader card as I still it signed for my set.

Thanks for the Mattingly tip. I sent TTM to him a week ago. |
No problem....my first success from him took over a year so be patient.
|
Mattingly
Nice Mattingly's Andy...thanks for the FYI on him signing, I have also tried TTM in the past with no luck.
|
Just acquired a Roy Lee Jackson and Randy Myers... It took awhile to find them. That puts me at 491/792 Ricky Wright is still at JSA

Just got in Robin Yount TTM 492/792
|
Nice Robin Yount!!!! I mailed to him recently hopefully he comes back signed.
No word on your Ricky Wright yet ?? |

He took less than 2 weeks to get it back to me. I hope yours gets in soon. The Ricky Wright!!??? Well, PSA, just today, said it’s coming back to me as “questionable authenticity”. I thought that might happen. As soon as it gets here it’s headed to JSA. I contacted the they guy who sold me the lot of cards. He’s a good dude. Here’s what he said. Is it authentic? I absolutely believe 100%. I purchased around 1500 signed cards for multiple sets in which I am completing. The gentleman in which I purchased them from has been a family friend for years. He spent every spring training from the early 70's until around 2000. I have well over 200 other "tough" signatures from him, some I've sent to TPA's and they have passed. My long point is, I have absolutely no reason to believe he'd sell upwards of 1500 cards and toss in one that was a forgery. All were obtained by him, none purchased. |
Anyone have any duplicates for sale or trade?

A few have arrived over the last six months.
Danny Heep Roger McDowell Bill Krueger Karl Best Ruben Sierra Record Breakers - I did a mail order for a show for this one. I would have sent his regular card, but it wasn't in good condition. 383/792 |

A relatively easy TTM and great signer but for some reason I had not been getting success from him. Rich Gedman on the Boston Red Sox Team leaders card.

John McNamara, not Joe Morgan.

Just curious.......I thought Tom Seaver wore 41 in 1986 for the Red Sox?
Andy |
I was incorrect on both id's. Looked real quick on a small screen and got them wrong. Using a larger screen I can see it is McNamara and Seaver. Stanley wore #46.
|
For anybody interested, there's a signed 1986 Topps signed by Ricky Wright on eBay. I don't mind the 1986 set, though I'm hoping one day he'll come around on the 1987 cards, depending on if the ones we've seen are authentic or not.
|
Just curious as I have zero idea, but what might expect to spend (super rough ballpark) in total to start the set from scratch assuming all cards are purchased (no TTM)?

Good to see John Kruk signing again........took over a year to get back.
|
Nice Kruk, Andy. Kruk was always a favorite of mine, and I'm sure glad he got to stick around long enough to get his lifetime avg back up to .300.
|
If anyone needs Donnie Baseball, I have a private signing with him next month for his charity and may be able to accommodate. PM works best.
|
For the few living players who refuse to sign their 1987 Topps card, we all know if given enough money, they will sign :D

Is there anybody besides Ricky Wright who doesn't sign the card? Also, has he ever signed it? I've heard stuff from he's never signed it to he signed very few when they first came out. |

Hi all --
I have over 200 different signed now from a through-the-mail campaign. Thought I would "color up" this thread by posting scans of some of the more popular cards. (I have some dupes -- but not of players I'm posting -- and am open to 1-for-1 trades). Thanks for indulging me — this has been a fun project. |

Out of curiosity what do those of you actively pursuing the set do about the checklists? I had a thought to have Peter Ueberroth sign them as he was commissioner in 1987. Does anyone have other ideas of who would be best to put on them? Or do you simply discount these cards?
|

I was a big A's fan growing up, so I have some obscure A's people for some of the checklists. #128 - I have 2 outstanding requests. Mike Gallego (A's) and Joe Wathan (Cubs interim manager). #264 - Sandy Alderson - A's GM in 1987 #392 - Working on Dave Duncan, Rene Lachemann, and Dave McKay (A's coaches in 1987) #522 - Frank Lucchesi (Royals 3d manager after Howser and Gardner) #654 - Billy Williams w/ HOF 1987 inscription #792 - Peter Uebberoth (Commissioner in 1987) - great signer but he signs in ballpoint (I've tried twice - both ballpoint and one signed on the back) #132T - Walt Weiss w/ Oakland A's 7/12/1987 inscription - Debut I may upgrade some of the CLs. Thinking McGwire and Santiago w/ 87 ROY inscriptions, Frank Viola w/ 87 WS MVP Inscription, Bell and Dawson w/ 87 MVP inscriptions, or Clemens and Bedrosian w/ 87 Cy Young inscrptions. Takes some cash as McGwire w/ an inscription runs $155 through a private signing on SCN. I'm also picky as Big Mac had a very different signature early on than he does now. My Mac #366 has the old signature. I won't upgrade the Williams HOF, Ueberroth, or Weiss Traded. Also - I have Bill Mazeroski on the Clemente TBTC since they were teammates and Maz is a HOFer. Most people seem to try for his kid or wife. I'd rather have Maz, that's just me. If you have any other questions about this set (players, returns, etc), let me know. I'm pretty far submerged in it so I feel that I have a lot of knowledge on this particular set. |
Those are some neat ideas. I sent the checklists to Ueberroth and included a Sharpie. He signed all in rapid fashion but like you, he signed the backs. I considered resending with sticky notes on the back to indicate to sign the other side.
I like the Maz idea on the Clemente TBTC. He's not terribly hard to get and there's a strong connection there. I really like the idea of the HOF guys from that year. Too bad I never thought of that while Catfish and Dandridge were alive. That would've been a neat solution for half of the 6 checklists. I started collecting in '86 so I'm pretty knowledgeable on the set, who the toughies are, variations of signatures (I have the rookie era Big Mac sig as well), etc. I never focused on completing the set but as I've collected over the years I've gotten 500+ different done, so I thought I'd try to see how close I could get without putting a ton of effort into it. I'll probably never pay up for Dick Howser, and I know Ricky Wright is next to impossible. Even the ones that have sold for prices far beyond what I'd be willing to pay have questionable authenticity. It's a great set though and brings me back to my early days in the hobby. Thanks for the input! |
I find it interesting that Ernie Camacho is on most of the want lists I see for this set. He has an educational foundation he uses to host clinics and provide scholarships in the Salinas area, has anyone ever tried contacting him there and/or inquiring about him signing for a donation?
|
Derek,
I got Ernie Camacho through that very same foundation, with a donation of course. Andy |
