Card of the day. Who couldn't but love the color schemes in this beautiful set?

When I took the pictures of my Zarillas, I realized that the black back was significantly smaller than the red back so apparently it was trimmed when I bought it years ago. Looks like card doctoring is not a new phenomenon.

I forget the poster but they posted an article from a dealer in the 70's, I believe, and in the writing the seller clearly wrote his card was perfect for trimming/cleaning up as the borders were wide/big. I have no idea, but doctoring cards back then, when they weren't worth much, might have been a normal thing? My black back Al Zarilla. |

I believe they are a direct result of what happened in the factory rather than just owner abuse but others with more experience/knowledge will have to chime in about it. Dom DiMaggio and Al Rosen, are other ones that comes to mind but there are others as well that are more prone to having them compared to other cards. |

My 24-hour rule Kennedy. This is a low grade card but I am proud of it because I won it recently on the Net54 auction forum.

I'm not sure how I ended up with the red back Staley. It looks much nicer than the rest of my set. I may have to downgrade it. :)

Card #80, the last card in series 1 and the last of the black backs.
I think my card, with the tilt, diamond cut and the upper right corner pull, was likely the first Herman Wehmeier that came down the assembly line. :D |

There are 3 versions of the Wehmeier, the black back and two distinct versions of the red back. These are both reds

Unfortunately, I don't own any either. |

I think at one point, I had 70 or so grays. I've had one of every player, including 2 yellow tiger gray backs. That's the real anomaly if anyone cares! I talk more about it when we get to #146 if I'm around. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |

Yes, from what I have read and heard, the Yellow Tiger grey backs are the toughest but most desired one sought. Looking forward to reading more so I hope you're around. |
REA has a Reiser gray back in this auction, and it does say that seems to be the rarest of the gray backs. Maybe the yellow tiger one is even harder to find then.
|
The issue with the House is that grey backs are scarce but finding a grey back that is also a yellow tiger makes it rare. The fascinating thing about the House is that the yellow anomaly appears on both the regular and grey back versions. Surely Ted will explain how this came to be when we get there :)

People like, Al, Ted, Toppcat (Dave) and others, however, know a lot more than I likely ever will so I will listen to them and hear what they have to say first before I conclusively say anything more. Quote:
Tedz mentioned he found finding a Martin gray back was rather tough but I am unsure if he owns a gray back Reiser or a Yellow Tiger gray back House? https://www.net54baseball.com/showth...952+gray+backs |

Nobody has the infamous "thumb print" printing flaw to post?
|
Quote:
|
Being the first card.on the sheet, I liked to think they upper right corner "finger print " is from touching a wet sheet. Quite a few have this, but more likely an error on the printing mask or platehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b159e91bdf.jpg

There are also versions of the Law card with a blue line or yellow mark in the right front border. A seller has both for sale on eBay now but they are recurring and can be found for a lot less than he is asking. They are not on the H&S super checklist, nor Ted’s finger print

Now that we are past the low-numbered series, I assume that there will be several people like me who'll be able to contribute more to this thread.
