I always fall to the "pushing harder" for completion...:) Really trying to stay patient as I close down some 50's sets...but it's not working well...haha |
Thanks to a fellow net54 member I finally closed out the last card I needed for my 55 Topps set. I've had the set before, sold it to fund something else...saw the prices JUMP...now have it again and will be keeping it...:)
Last card should have been one of the first cards, I try not to save the Mantles or card like this for last...but so it goes sometimes. Stoked to have the Clemente back into my collection! (thanks Chris!) https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1623247951 |

With the card below, I am one card away from completing my 1977 Topps Set.
And that card is Gaylord Perry. Mr. Perry is on his way to my waiting hands and should be here by the end of the week! WOOT!!!! 659/660 with 660 on its way. |
It's been a slow couple of months since the last update, but at least I'm going in the right direction on these few sets. I have added a 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set to the chase as I was able to pick up about half the set at the LCS.
T206 Southern Leaguers, Virginia League - holding steady at 10/12 and needing to 'Shag' a 'Hooker' to finish this one 1952 Topps Low Numbers - 277/310, making good progress approaching 310. Why couldn't Mick have been a low number? - at least I'd have a puncher's chance. 1954 Bowman - 170/224 1959 Fleer Ted Williams - 54/80 - nice set seeing it all together 1964 Topps Giants auto'd - 57/60, still needing Clemente, Farrell and Mays 1964 Topps - 553/585, the 6th series seems to be tougher than the 7th series |
1977 Topps Baseball Set is now completed. Gaylord Perry arrived today and is sitting comfortably with the rest of his 77 yearly cohorts.
Onto 1980, 1972 and 1973 Topps Baseball set quests. Not necessarily in that order of completion at this point in time. |
Still Needed:
T206 (minus big five) - 170 (67%) 1967 O-Pee-Chee - 186 (5%) 1964 Topps Tattoos - 28 (63%) 1958 Kahn's - 19 (35%) 1956 Kahn's - 13 (13%) 1961 Topps Dice Game - 10 (44%) 1963 Bazooka All-Time Greats (Silver) - 5 (88%) 1978 Topps - 4 (99%) 1979 Topps - 4 (99%) 1951 Topps Major-League All-Stars - 3 (73%) An All-Star Cardboard Memories - 5 (98%) 1967 Kahn's - 2 (96%) 1955 Kahn's - 1 (83%) 1959 Kahn's - 1 (97%) 1969 Topps - 1 (99%) 1973 Topps - 1 (99%) 1973 Topps Checklists - 1 (96%) 1977 Topps - 1 (99%) |
1956 Topps - COMPLETE!
What a beautiful set, classic. Didn't end on a HOFer this time as I attacked the big cards first. Funny which cards sometimes come last...this time was #219 Lew Burdette. As with my other over sized 50's sets, I have left a few SGC graded - Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killebrew, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron and Jackie Robinson...I may even send in a couple others like my Mays and Ted W. I place reprints in the binder... Just need 1954 Topps Al Kaline and Jackie Robinson to complete my 54-90 run! Last card - https://i.ibb.co/myBKCzs/56-Burdette.jpg |
Congrats, John. Quote an impressive Topps run you have there.

Starting a 1963 Topps Peel-Off set.
Small set that is within my budget. Question - Do they fit in either 12 or 15 pocket pages? The 12 pocket looks like it might be a bit too small. Thanks! Mike |
I took some time off from serious set completion work over the last year or so but came back to it in May. I've knocked off about 15 1967 Topps hi #s and and am down to seven. I lost out on a couple over the weekend but I've got snipes in on three more so hopefully I can get lucky once or twice.
I was sitting at three missing 1962 Post Cereal cards but found a couple of reasonable ones this morning and had offers accepted. Down to just Gary Geiger to finish off the set. I had intended to be a 'completest' and try to collect all the small variations but I think I'll drop that goal and work on finishing the '62 Green Tints. After that I'll think about my low-key set chases, '67 Philly Gum, '75 Topps minis and the '61 Topps stamps. I haven't given them much thought at all recently and they can wait although I'm sure I'll get them done at some point. None are tough to find items, it's just a matter of doing the work. |

Crazy I posted this way back in 2017 and post 113 (on page 4 I believe). I did finish my 1975 Topps and 1974 Topps. I never finished my 1957 Topps set (got about 50 different cards at this point). And I still have all of the 1962s plus a few more. Up to about 100 different in that set.
Since then I've started working on a 1958 Topps set. But I'm only about 200 into it, so not even halfway. I've tried to trade, but I can't find anyone that wants to trade with me. Seems everyone only wants to buy and sell and no one trades anymore. Quote:
|
I wish I could trade more...I do have two binders of post war doubles but most are cards that have been upgraded or not in high demand. I just don't carry much to offer in trades. I think others fall into the same boat...

Congrats on the 1977 set ! As you know, the set is sneaky tough in great condition as the cardboard is thinner and the borders are prone to chipping. |

Decided that I wanted only clean mid-grade cards from top to bottom, because this is going to be a special part of my collection. No wrinkles (except for possibly those close to the corner small diagonal ones) and nice surfaces. Was ready to be as patient as necessary. But, go figure, the perfect Jackie for the set's goals showed up right away (and went for the right price). Sometimes I love BVG 5s and the steep slab discount you get for the great cards that might be in them, and that's what happened. It's on its way. So, now I'm at 6/252  Also have Yogi, Rizzuto, Parnell, and two commons. https://i.imgur.com/70l9tEp.jpg |
I am looking for:
1963 Fleer (vg at best) - #13 J Kindall, # 32 R Santo, #35 B Purkey, #57 E Face, and # 66 B O'Dell. - I stopped looking on ebay because of the near mint prices on vg cards PLUS $8.00 shipping. Nope not going to do that. Also looking for: E47 Jockey's (vg at best) - C Ginistrelli, J Galway, E Corrigan, P D'Arenberg N72 Coins Of All Nations (vg at best) - Corea, England, Peru, Servia The search continues for reasonably priced cards and shipping. Thanks, Bob |
I'm working on a 1958 Topps set in mid-grade condition. I've been working on this set for a little over a month and have 277 different. I have many of the stars/HOFers, but I have a few left to get obviously. Am always looking for stuff I don't have if anyone has any extras FT/FS. Here's a few pictures.

3 more needed from '61 Topps:
472 Berra MVP, 573 Boyer AS, 576 Maris AS 5 more from '70 Kelloggs, which might be my favorite set of any set: 12 Mays, 16 May, 18 Reichardt, 21 B. Robinson, 27 Clemente, 71a Gibson (1959 IP blank) I could not believe how much the Mays and Clemente go for now. I have a lot of Kelloggs from the '70s to trade. Also if anyone is only missing one or two from a '76-'84 Topps baseball set and it's not Nolan Ryan or a Murray rookie or something like that, let me know. If I have it, it's yours. |
I decided I'd quit whining about prices and just go out and do what I could to finish off the '67 Topps SPs I needed. I managed to track down five of the seven in reasonable shape at decent (relatively) prices. A couple, Clendenon and Tommy John, are nice samples of tough cards and I got lucky on the eBay auctions. I'm down to Mike Shannon and the Rod Carew rookie. I've got bids in on a few Shannons. Hoping to continue my luck.
The best thing that's happened since I last hit this thread was finishing my '62 Post Cereal baseball set. At least I think I have. The last card, Gary Geiger, another hard-to-find SP, came from a source I'd never connected to vintage cards, Amazon. Last Friday, after my weekly fishing for Geiger expedition on eBay I decided to widen my net a bit and just googled the card and clicked the Google shopping tab on the results. Geiger popped up ON AMAZON for about $8 plus shipping. I couldn't hit 'buy' fast enough. In all the years I've been buying cards online I've never considered Amazon as a place to check. I'm still not 100% sure the deal is real but Amazon says my order shipped Saturday. We'll see what happens. |
Technically, I finished my 1972 Topps Baseball set on Friday, it's just a matter of waiting for everthing to arrive, about 17 cards from different sellers.
I've been working on a 70 Topps set as well, but that has progressed at a slower pace. I need 144 cards altogether, the majority between 460 - 680; 104 cards within these numbers to be exact. In addition I'm missing Bench, Munson, Rose, Gamble, many HOF All-Star cards, and the Pilots team card. 78 topps down to 6
6 cards away from completing my first 1970's set ever...…...Big thanks to Dave Hogan, Dan Paradis and Michael Reedy for all the help!! Not sure if I will make it on my 64 and 67 set but this 78 Topps set is a true happy set for me! What seems like small gains for some means the world to others. Thank you guys!!! 6 more cards! Enjoying seeing them in a binder. Thank you all.
|
Went to the National and picked up several cards for my 61 Topps baseball set. I am down to 5 cards to complete the set. Only 1 day at the show or I may have been able to complete there. So the search continues.
|
Received a fantastic 1978 Topps baseball complete set yesterday.
Working on the 1972 Topps set as well. Received 30 high number commons as well as a Bench, Aaron, and two additional 2nd series commons. Picked up 14 commons to finish the 1st series for the 1972 set. I also like to add to each years set when I can with progressive proof cards. So I have a 1978 7-card progressive proof card set on its way and will also add the uncut team checklist card panel at a later date. I just added a 1975 progressive proof set and am looking for the 1975 uncut team set if anyone has one, I am interested. (Unmarked) I have my eyes on a 7-card progressive proof set for the 1972 Topps set that I will be adding sometime soon as well. And I believe the seller is a member here. |
1950 Bowman is now at 70/252. All commons added lately (except for a Duke Snider SGC 5).
This will probably be a long process. It'd be easy to get these in grade 2-3, but not overpaying for mid-grade is going to take plenty of patience. Once you get in the trenches of building it, that's a bigger step up than you might've expected |
Still Needed:

Update on my 1963 Topps Peel-Off set is slightly over 50%. Have 26 of the 46. Mostly have commons but a few stars: Mays, Yaz and Brooks.
Interesting about the 1967 set. I completed mine around 1985. The last two cards I needed were #553 Yankees Rookies and the Colavito. Had been looking for a few years. (This was pre-internet). Finally saw an ad for the Yankees Rookies and sent in my check. In the meantime, went to a large show up at the Meadowlands here in NJ. A dealer had the Colavito! Bought it and he also had the Yankees Rookies card so I bought that too. Mike Attachment 476593 |
1977 Topps
Nothing too exciting, but I started a 1977 Topps build a couple of months ago. I am at about 85% completion at this point, just waiting on a couple of shipments to have the cards in hand. Pretty much down to the subsets (leaders, record breakers, brothers) and star cards but, thankfully, none of those are too outrageous.
|
I found a few more cards for my 1961 Topps baseball set. I need just two more to complete it. #575 Banks AS and 576 Maris AS.

Progress report for me. I've spent the last 6 months selling a bunch of stuff that I had no intention of keeping and really thinning out my collection, and now I am finally getting back into building sets and building my collection.
Current projects: 1953 Topps (raw set): 9/274 - I did pick up a really nice EXish Bolling, so I've already knocked off one of the 10 toughest cards in the set 1960 Topps (raw set): 45/573 - I'm building this in mid+ grade. Right now, every card is EXMINT or better and that is my goal. Piecing it together one by one using greg morris cards. T206 Portraits Master Set: 39/1650 - Have a long long way to go here, lol Non-Sports/Misc: T29 Animals: 37/80 on the basic set, 37/160 on the master T30 Arctic Scenes: 25/25 on the basic set, 26/50 on the master T42 Birds (White Borders): 37/50 on the basic set, 37/550?? on the master T42 Birds (Gold Borders): 49/50 on the basic set, 49/550?? on the master T48 Butterflies: 37/50 T77 Lighthouses: 27/50 on the basic set, 34/100 on the master set T118 Explorers: 3/25 on the basic set, 3/50 on the master set 1929 Churchman: 10/25 |
My projects:
1959 Topps 157/572 1963 Topps 63/576 I started working on both sets last year. I'm aiming for a VG-EX set for both years. For my Dad: 1970 Topps 692/720 1971 Topps 615/752 1972 Topps 783/787 1973 Topps 352/660 These are the sets that my dad collected as a kid, so I'm trying to turn his duplicates into cards for these sets. |

Congratulations, Gary!!! :)
Oh my! I posted my comment, and everybody else's posts disappeared. :( |
I just completed the 1973 baseball set. It took the better part of 6 years or so.
I bought the HoF's first with Schmidt being the first card I bought. $75 bucks for a sharp 5.5. The last card I needed was #590 Deron Johnson. Tough card to find centered, however I found one. Most of my set is un-graded except for the HoF's. The set is fairly well centered, but again, the cards are difficult in centered condition. Iconic rookie card in Schmidt with the last cards of Mays and Clemente. The set is loaded with HoF's. This was the first set I seriously collected as a kid. I loved those cards and while they are long gone, the past 6 years gave me an opportunity to be a kid again. This set of cards will be with me for the rest of my life. They're my time machine. |

1960 Topps I need 103 cards to finish it off of a possible 572, been working on it for almost 4 years now. Been picking up mostly Raw cards and love them in original form
Been wanting to start another set prefer Vintage Topps 1980 or before of some sort. Also may lower expectations on what condition a little |
started the 53 set in psa 5 or better in October of last year.. All need to have good centering appeal with minimal chipping on the black or red edge..
Currently sitting at 215/271 78.47% with the mantle mays paige and robinson as the major roadblocks.. just waiting for the right ones on those and most tht pop up are either low grade or too nice for what I want to pay.. 5.56 overall grade |
I am stuck on 500/792 with my 1972 Topps baseball set. I have 11 coming from COMC. But they won’t get delivered until November at this point.
I have some Civil War books that I ordered a while ago that are going to be here this month. So I gotta pay for them first. Civil War history is my other hobby. Sometimes very expensive, especially collecting 1st editions. Cheers, |
1977 Topps completed
Just purchased the final four cards this past weekend to complete my 1977 Topps Baseball set. They should arrive in a couple of days and I am looking forward to putting them in the binder and wrapping up this project. Not an earth-shaking accomplishment, but I am pumped because this was one of the sets I collected as a kid and it certainly holds some great memories.

Congrats!! 1977 Topps is one of those highly underappreciated sets, most likely due to the overproduced era it was released in. But, man, the design works beautifully, there's a ton of great action shots (the Dave Kingman is one of this Mets fan's all time favorite cards), and the All Star banner adds a wonderful prestige to the cards featuring it. We all hoarded those guys like crazy! Great stuff!!!

Finished my 1951 Topps Redback set today when the Boston variation of Tommy Holmes came in the mail from Batters Box. Paid a bit more than I wanted to but had been looking hard for the card for most of 2021.
Next focus card is 1953 Bowman Black and White #39 Casey Stengel to finish that set |
There are three Dodger team sets I’m working on that are all down to just one card to go. Technically a full Diamond Stars team set would include both Mungo cards (1934 #19 and 1936 #102), but I’m satisfied with just one.
Missing cards are T205 Wilhelm, Diamond Stars Babich, and Bowman Reese. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9f7616dc9c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a65524e632.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...108cc55817.jpg |

I'm down to needing 3 cards to finish my 1958 Topps set. But I'm getting frustrated as I'm having trouble finding them. I've found them for absurd asking prices on eBay, and I'm not going to overpay just to finish a set. So I'm thinking about just giving up on it and moving them all and finding another set to build.
I'm just getting started on a 1957 Topps set, which is my all time favorite set. I only have about 220ish, but I've got a large lot of 100 different (taken off my needs list, so none will be dupes of what I have) that should be here tomorrow or Friday. Most of them are in Ex to NM condition and most are from the very tough midseries set. So that would be put me about 315, which isn't close. But still close enough to try and finish. |

Bill— for purposes of a master set are you using the PSA master list or something else ?
|
Hi Al,
I'm not certain, I started this set a while back and stalled with 3 more to go while other projects took over. I've gone for the "base set" plus all green tints, checklist variations and Buhl & Tasby no logos. Your questions prompted me to check out the PSA list which somewhat confused me as the one I looked at showed 4 different Lee Walls cards: Face Left pinstripe jersey Face Right, plain jersey Face left, pinstripe jersey green tint Face right, plain jersey - green tint Link: https://www.psacard.com/cardfacts/ba...1962-topps/173 I have face left, pinstripe jersey which is what I thought was the green tint and face right, plain jersey which is what I have as the regular card. Have you seen 4 variations of Walls in your collecting? I haven't. Bill |
There are only two Lee Walls cards--the face left is green tint, and the face right is not-so green tint--for a total of 691. :)

You didn’t mention Checklist #6 variation w/ large and small print.
|
691 is what PSA lists for the 1962 Super set with the green tints, as opposed to the base and master set lists which do not have the green tints. But for 1962 and well as every other Topps set from the 60s there are at least 2 versions of each checklist. The differences were not intended like the Buhl and Tasby cards, but exist because the cards were double printed. They may never be added to the 691 but should. Most of the rest of these are just recurring print defects

Set Collectors - Report in your progress!
I rarely post in this thread, as I am rarely able to report progress like this: But today I picked up a lot of nearly 300 ‘72 commons at the LCS to add to my fledgling start that was already at home in the box. Haven’t finished cataloging all of it yet, but with today’s addition I figure I am somewhere in the neighborhood of 380 out of the 787 card set, or approaching the halfway mark.
For somebody who is not a set collector by nature, I’m not sure why I decided to go for the postwar monster as my first endeavor, LOL! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...509b41de26.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5868a82abb.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3a964dd3f0.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b2460626f2.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
