there are quite a few advertising auction companies - behemoths and smaller specialty houses. High end material usually ends up there. In the northeast there are also advertising and paper shows of all kinds. Finally there's eBay. MOST OF THE TIME - interesting, aesthetically pleasing, and rarely encountered items won't fall through the cracks in any of those venues although walking a paper or trade card show would likely be the best place for a "find" in terms of valuation. The good news is there's all kinds of ways to collect endless categories at all price levels. The patient and knowledgeable buyer with a PLAN will get the most enjoyment whether significant and beautiful pieces or a run of magazine ads.

Interestingly enough, I've accumulated more than 2/3rd's of my tobacco related memorabilia/collection from Ebay through the years.
If your patient and know what to search for, many quality items are out there and will pop up. |
Very interesting, Tony
Most of my stuff pictured in this thread has been acquired from the numerous Antique shops here in Pennsylvania and up in the Cooperstown area. In the future, I'll have to concentrate on ebay....as you say. TED Z . |

Excited to pick up this piece. It's a paper advertising poster that has been mounted on cardboard. It's quite large - almost 30 inches in size. Obvious condition issues, but I haven't sen another.

My guess is 1880-90s.

I have two Jon :-)
still a nice piece. I would say around the time of the Paris Exposition. In the album there is a very similar banner on their parade float. Also take note of the slightly more smiling old planter than the earliest 1880 depictions of their famous icon.........

Recent pickups. Cigar box is first in my collection. Well, I guess the jar would be a first as well:p

Nice cigar box Michael.

Thanks Kenny! I know virtually nothing about cigar boxes but its got the look Im after so I couldn't resist.

If the box is from 1883, I think that's one of the earlier baseball cigar boxes you'll find. Again, great item! If you're ever interested in selling or maybe trading... Please let me know. Brent |

Michael-
Great box. I also have a Home Run cigar box with some different graphics. Although a few proofs of this label exist, I believe this is the only complete cigar box known. It, too, is dated 1883 (see photos below). - Jon |

Brent and Jon,
Thanks for the kind words on the cigar box. Fantastic box you have yourself there Jon. Like I believe I mentioned earlier, cigar boxes are new territory for me and liking the action scene, am glad I pursued this one. You guys understand the rarity of these better than I do but the only one I could find through a quick google search was of this exact box someone previously pinned on pinterest. |

1952 Topps and 1950 Bowman

You see these in cardboard form quite often, but never made of wood. The still hinges and front hasps are quite heavy duty and ornate. Measures 6" x 10".
Displays removable wooden trays as well. Makes for a great T206 companion piece! http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw.../epdgwood1.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw.../epdgwood2.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw.../epdgwood3.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw.../epdgwood4.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw.../epdgwood5.jpg |

is there a cancel stamp that can be read? Nice no matter what. I'd love to have one in my collection.
Great GQ box Jon! Hammered at a very fair price. I've seen them sell from 750. - 3000.! Quite a special "carton". Mine is prominently displayed. Maybe time for another Jerry Spillman et all debate about which packs might have come from which carton? |

Very excited to add this 1912 Cracker Jack box to my collection! It's not the 1913-1918 box that contained prizes including baseball cards in them but there's still only a handful confirmed to survive.

Very very nice AJ. ;)
|
I figured you might like that Tony. Haha

Also, congrats on the Little Jockey pack. Have you been able to locate evidence of what cards were distributed in them? The GQ carton is also nice, I was watching it but not ready to make the jump from packs to cartons. Regarding the various GQ packs, can anyone share a picture of the "ornate pack"? |
I recently completed a run of all pre-ATC merger Duke cigarette packs. These would have competed with A&G, Kinney, Kimball, Goodwin (my favorite), and the others during the card boom of 1887-1890. The Duke's Best brand would be the last brand to join the others before the merger, having been introduced September 1889.
All six are pre-ATC merger examples. |

Don't believe I have posted this before but if I have my memory ain't what it used to be:p
Measures about 28 in by 58 in and likely my next item to send in for a little conservation work. |
Jay, what a beautiful Goodwin trio, that GQ pack is no doubt the finest in existence (if I recall, a clear 1887 overprint). The Lone Jack isn't too shabby either :)

Awesome run, Joe. I'm away for the weekend, but when I get home tomorrow evening, I can post an ornate GQ pack.
Jay - that Palo Alto pack is amazing. As you know, I'm also a big fan of the GQ! Just let me know when you want to let it go ;-) |

A small Lone Jack tin:
|
Hey Jay
Here's my Lone Jack tin....found it in a small Antique shop in the Jersey Pine Barrens last summer...cost me only $20. My question to you: were the 1887 N370 cards packaged in these tins ? http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...baccoTin50.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...oTinside50.jpg TED Z . |
Hi Ted! I doubt it. I don't know for a fact, but I bet they came in the slide shell packs, just like Old Judges and Gypsy Queens.
|
Thanks, Jay
Correct if I'm wrong, but I think there are 13 subjects in the LONE JACK set. So, here is the BIG question....does anyone have a complete set of these rare cards ? TED Z . |
That is correct. The Lone Jack set mirrors the Browns Champ Old Judge subset which has thirteen cards. As to whether there exists a complete Lone Jack set, I've heard one is out there but I have not seen it nor do I know who might have it.

Jon-When does that pack date from?

Believe 1883. I should qualify that the pack is not mine.

Jay, some amazing Buchner pieces, did they all come together or did you piece them together one by one. Amazing either way. |

I believe Jim Shaw shared the photo with me years ago. I can't recall where the pack came from, but I believe it was complete, albeit empty. I also have a lower quality scan of a flattened pack - no idea where I got this scan, but unfortunately it doesn't yield any additional info. |

While we're on the topic of early cigarette packs, below are the only 2 known Kalamazoo Bats packages that I'm aware of. Both are identical in size and would fit a card, so my best guess is that these were used for distribution. Note some of the subtle differences in the font used for "The Best Cigar in the World".

Simply wow Jon. Thanks for the historical context and preservation.
|
Joe-Thanks! The small Buchner pieces all came from one source. The clocks came from two other sources.

Jay-
Any idea what the base ball pipe referenced on the back of coupon looked like? - Jon |
Jon-I have never seen the pipe. The more fragile items, like the pipe, probably did not survive the ravages of time.

I posted this on the T207 thread as well, but after much searching (and assistance), I was able to track down and photograph the Napoleon pack at the National. This is the first time I have ever seen a correct Napoleon pack, so to say they are rare is an understatement. This one was discovered in a church in Boston with a Napoleon card tucked inside. Full 1912 tax stamp makes the box even cooler!

Napoleon Box
Nice pickup, Jon! To say that those are scarce, would be an understatement. All the best,
Michael |
Thanks Michael. Unfortunately I just got the photo, not the pack!
