The Smith postcard looks awesome. Love that big flag backdrop

Very cool stuff. I've never seen one of those Billiken cards before....

Won this a couple days ago, with a bid I thought was a lowball. Not sure if I'll keep it because it's a cool set and card, or trade bait box it because I like complete sets and this one is not really going to happen. Won a few things lately at bids I thought had no chance, hopefully the market is softening a little and I haven't just gotten lucky
|

Had that on my Watchlist. Thought you got it for a great price. I think the market is softening on a lot of stuff........or at the very least, it's very erratic, and fluctuations can vary wildly. Also, with the new category changes and fracked up search engine, you're more likely to get bargains from smaller sellers, then you are from the giant consignment sellers who have already captured their market. Category changes and reliable search engines don't mean quite as much to them, as to the smaller seller who has a harder time being found on the platform. |
IMO the category change has done major damage to the less popular categories. The boxing category is a mess. All of the unopened "box" stuff gets dragged into it and even when you refine for sport "boxing" a ton of extraneous crap still shows up. My sales last week were abysmal after weeks of strong sales and the only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that the items that sold before were discovered and tracked before the category shuffling. I fear it will take months for this to be sorted out. Until it is I think I will just confine myself to fixed price listings, some with best offers.
|
Quote:
When you list, you have to find a way to fit the word "boxing" in the title. I've always done that, but it's even more important now. .......and, when you search, you have to search the word "Boxing", and put it in quotes......otherwise anything that's a spin-off of the word "box", will pop up. Sad thing is............you won't pick up anything boxing related, where the seller originally put it in a formerly existing boxing category, but neglected to put the word "boxing" in the item title. In other words............Ebay F*&k3ed it all up. I hope what I just wrote, makes a lick of sense. |

I’m hoping the market is softening and isn’t my confirmation bias because I want that to happen. I’m kicking myself for forgetting to bid on the T219 Johnson that went cheap the day before. I don’t want to dump on eBay because without them, I wouldn’t have half as many cards as I do, but boy was this change poorly thought out. It takes forever to search for what I want nowadays. I’ve found “boxing -box” works too to weed out some of the crap. It’s extra bad for us boxing dorks because at least half of the sellers have no clue what their cards even are to name them properly. Wish there was another platform, the BST here is great for baseball pickups but I’ve only done like 3 boxing deals here posting my want lists. |
Unlike what eBay did, it makes sense, Dave. I am going to have to go in and amend all my listings to add the magic word...

Not usually my kind of card, I don't like the concept of these single card releases very much, but I absolutely love the old Pro Set football cards because.... I have no idea. So this one was a cool addition to my growing box of "random boxing cards that don't fit in sets". Seller forgot to list this copy with a stock emoji and "RC, HOT" tag.

The prettiest boxing cards in my book. This has 2 pinholes but is an upgrade, my old Papke didn't have any of it's 4 borders. This as far along upgrading condition as I ever get.
If anyone want's a piece of crap trimmed up Papke, PM me... |

Not a tough one but has proven oddly elusive for me. I got his red back pretty easily but have needed this one for awhile, go figure.

WTF??? Why is Dempsey punching a blind guy??? handwritten date on the back 1932. Before entering films, William Thomas "Kid" Broad had been a professional boxer in the featherweight and lightweight classes, and had over 100 bouts in his career. Only twice did he suffer a knockout. Born in England in 1878, he began fighting in Cleveland in the late 1890s, and his career took off. His greatest ring triumph occurred in 1901, when he knocked out Young Corbett just two months before Corbett went on to win the featherweight title. Supposedly, at one of his bouts, the Kid was discovered by Douglas Fairbanks and approached about being in movies. He spent about a decade in the ring, and began appearing as an extra in films, and assisting with fight scenes. In 1916, he, along with several ex-boxers, appeared in the Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle short Bright Lights (1916). In one scene, he and his friends were supposed to be beaten up by a group of sailors. Instead, the boxers kept beating up the sailors, take after take. Arbuckle finally decided that the fight looked better that way. Douglas Fairbanks once called the Kid, asking him to play a tough guy part. The Kid thought someone larger would be better in the role, so he recommended wrestler Bull Montana, giving the grappler his start in pictures. In another version of the story, Fairbanks thought the Kid wasn't ugly enough for the part, and asked him to find someone uglier. It is not known exactly how many movies Kid Broad made, but by the time he appeared in Wanted: A Husband (1919) in 1919, some newspapers reported that he already had 89 films to his credit. Although virtually nothing is known about his wife, The Moving Picture World reported in 1920 that both the Kid and Mrs. "Kid" Broad were appearing in Frontier of the Stars (1921), and this was her film debut. In the early 1930s, the Kid worked as a banker's bodyguard on Wall Street. Kid Broad spent his last years in New York City, living on the west side. He would carry a picture of himself as a young boxer wearing green tights. He kept another picture in his hotel room; that of a young woman in a dance costume. The Kid claimed she was his wife, who had died decades earlier. His neighbors felt sorry for him and would give him some money for rent and food. Kid Broad's brother John offered him a home in Cleveland, but the Kid replied that he would rather die around a New York lamppost than in an Ohio cow pasture. In June of 1947, the Kid got his wish. A patrolman found a dead body in a doorway on the lower west side of the city. The victim's beard and unkempt hair initially made his identification difficult, but the cauliflower ears stood out. Several of his old-time friends identified the dead man as the Kid. Death had been caused by hardening of the arteries. When the funeral was held, only six people showed up. The Kid was not even shaved for his services, because his brother John felt that the boxer should go out as he had lived the last few years. |

Nice. Now you need a Cicogna to complement it.

Adam, the 1952 Cicogna Marciano appears to be hand-cut and pretty small. I'm not familiar with this issue, is it cut from a magazine?

Well, someone must be wrong. Here's another graded example that says it's 1952. I guess we have dueling grading companies. :D
|
I'm near certain that the SGC slab is wrong.
It is the only example from the set they have graded. Most likely they misidentified, or trusted a submitter's info into giving it the label for the card. Italian sellers state it is 1955 Naninna, as does Beckett. https://www.gosgc.com/pop-report/res...Cicogna/Boxing |
I picked up this card last weekend at the National completing my set!

This RPPC looks like Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Mike Jacobs and some others gathered in Jacobs' office for some sort of signing. Since Jacobs looked pretty lively but dropped dead in 1953, I am guessing this is pre-1953. |
Dammit Adam, this one haunts my dreams. I feel like I've seen all those guys at some point or another.

Seeing a Jeffries trend. If one values boxers based on their resume and career achievements, Jeffries is a huge steal in pre-war boxing. Nice picks
|
Quote:
|
Totally agree. Jeffries is one of my personal favorites since his former ranch and boxing venue is a long stone's throw from my office. I have a variety of JJJ memorabilia including a flag and a ribbon from a wreath from his funeral. Probably gotta do a shadow box of stuff some day.
|
If Jack Johnson is Babe Ruth, James Jeffries gotta at least be Jimmy Foxx. :D
|
Unpopular opinion, but Jeffries resume is far superior to Johnson’s.
Johnson beat Jeanette, Langford (who wasn’t really a heavyweight even then), a washed up Fitzsimmons in 1907, Burns, and he defended his title against only middling competition and champions at lower weight classes (O’Brien, Ketchell), and a washed up retired Jeffries after he quit and become a 300 pound fatso. His actual record is not very strong. Compare it to Jeffries resume. He lost to Jeanette (who he beat far more often), Choynski and Hart before he was washed up. Johnson has the socially popular narrative and biography suited to its audience today. Jeffries has the ring record. |

Not sure if this counts, but I recently picked up this partial set from Japan. I've always liked Rikidozan so thought it would be fun to hunt down the missing cards. Wish me luck. :P

Not exactly a "pickup", more of a "found tucked away", lol.
Has weird defect on it, looked like a calcium deposit that might brush off. But under magnification it looks like paper is bubbled? As you can see it goes through to both sides. Never saw anything like it before. |
Looks like some kind of chemical deposit. That signature looks good enough to make it worthwhile to have a conservator look at it and see what can be done.
Meanwhile my big get for the...year: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...bit%20card.jpg Overpaid for it but when you see the right card for your collection, sometimes you have to say WTF, make your move. After all, I am Exhibitman... |

Been awhile since I posted a pickup. Was happy to get this Nelson, I have no expectation of completing an 80 card master, but hoping to build 'as many as I can reasonably get'. The images in T224/T229 are fantastic quality for their small size. This one cost a bit more than I would want it too because it's 4 VG/EX range, but it's hard to being picky on condition with the tougher sets. 3 down, 77 to go.

That Ogdens Jackson is fantastic. I was happy to get one with a small chunk out of the side.
I haven't seen one of those Siki cards offered for sale for years. Really nice. Mine has a different back: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ris%20Siki.jpg I guess they were trade cards that could be imprinted by advertisers. |
Thanks Adam, I remember you sharing the image of yours with me a few years ago. It's better than I expected, light chipping but no creases.
|
Interesting that the Siki has different backs. I think I've seen that card before cruising overseas Ebay sites, but never made note of the back.

The Siki sat in my cart for a few months(I think listed obscurely) while I attempted to research it and never found anything. It was the purple that sealed the deal for me. Lastly - Adam, you're about to hit 10,000 posts!!!! |
You're lucky I didn't spot it or I'd probably have snagged it just for the back variation.

You have the most expensive one already so the rest of the set should be easy sledding. Those are especially nice looking examples. |
You got the 4 most expensive ones, so you’re good to finish easily now. Always love to see these, beautiful cards. I just picked up a Langford myself, the no text back. Yours looks a lot nicer!

Fitzsimmons was a great boxer, but most of his cards are not very appealing. I guess when you do the math He would have been in his mid to late 40’s when the card was released.

“IF” we want to see the high resolution scans. They are T9’s, of course we do!
|
I just want to say that this thread is awesome! Thanks to everyone for sharing your amazing cards. T218, T220, T226, the E cards, etc., they're all beautiful! The best part about stepping into this world for me has been learning about the turn-of-the-century boxers in the T9 set. I knew I was in trouble when I bid on and won a T218 Jeffries about a week after I got my T9s. :D I'm going to be taking a close look at the Jeffries barn the next time I'm at Knotts Berry Farm.
