I forgot I had this one:
|
Had that one for a number of years, Dan. WaJo was always one of my favorites. Glad to see it went to a good home via the auction route.
|
And Thank You Phil for letting it go as I Love it! Its my favorite WaJo. This and the Lajoie were huge for me as that Lajoie is one of my favorite HOF Rookies. I know I'm selling alot of my vintage but these are 2 you will NOT see on the BST!
|
Thanks Jim.
The Novelty Johnson is a nice card, may be the only from the set where I prefer the pc796 counterpart though, closer-up cropping of the image and they got his name right. Both are great cards though! |

Here's a C.1925-33 Real Photo Postcard of Mickey Cochrane. Thanks greenmonster!
|
Very cool postcard, Jeff. My research shows that it's either 1929 or 1930 based on the uniform style, same both years.
|
Thanks Phil! The reverse has an AZO stamp box with the four squares so that's how I got my dates, thanks for narrowing it down for me!
|
Very nice, reminds me of your Grove.
|
That's funny you mention that Jeff, I was just looking at those two postcards side by side!

A few new ones...
1914 E&S Publishing Co. Joe Jackson (take 'em as you find 'em) 1914 E&S Publishing Co. Frank Chance (in his last year in the majors) 1906 Shreveport Pirates, Southern Association (the earliest team pc I've seen from that league) |
1906 V.O. Hammon Publications, Chicago #320 Postcard
I was born in Aurora IL, so this postcard has special meaning to me. It depicts a "Bunch of Baseball Fans" standing outside the Beacon-News Building (the town's newspaper published continuously since 1846) getting updates on the 1906 World Series between the Cubs and White Sox. There was probably a chalkboard in the window where ticker-tape updates were relayed and posted for all to see. http://www.baseballcardstars.com/per...beaconnews.jpg |

Keeping with the Chicago theme, here's a C.1910 RPPC of Comiskey Park. Thanks again James! (aka the "greenmonster)

It's been five days since a post on this thread. Too long.
Here's 1911 Northwestern League batting champ Art Bues looking confident at Yesler Way Park in Seattle. Postcard was mailed from Seattle by Bues back to his hometown. What's that kid doing in that basket? |

This private mailing card showing Pittsburgh's Exposition Park in the background is the earliest card intended for mailing I know of which shows a major league stadium (left side, in the distance). The card is postmarked September 21, 1903, just 10 days before the start of the first World Series game in history between the Boston Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates on October 1 at Boston's Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds.
My website (link below) has galleries of early baseball postal cards, unusual baseball postcards, and pre-1920 World Series related postcards if you're interested in seeing more. |

Agreed. By the way, the two RPPC's arrived today Jason, thanks again! |
Thanks!
I found the Doc Powers Day a couple of years ago at a small postcard show. The dealer knew it was a tough one, as he had several high end cards.
Over the years he's had the Powers card, the Rotograph Chesbro I posted earlier, a 1912 Red Sox team card, a San Francisco Seals card that I was beaten to by the guy who literally got to his table a minute before I did, and this great card: http://www.vintageball.com/1910-Roanoke-PC316.jpg http://www.vintageball.com/1910-Roanoke-PC-Bak.jpg This is the 1910 pennant winning Roanoke Tigers of the Virginia League. Many of these players were featured on T209 Contentnea and T206 cards. The card was sent by a player, presumably shortstop Eugene Newton. The message on the reverse mentions that the team barely topped the league and was postmarked in September of 1910. |
^^^
 |
Robert,
I'm glad you live in a different town. Nice PCs. Rob |
Love seeing that Roanoke PC. I'd be willing to bet that the photographer Kidd from Roanoke produced a few cabinet cards or RPPCs of the players that are floating around there somewhere. Would be great to find a few.

Roanoke vs Chattanooga ? After Championship ??

The message on the reverse mentions that the team barely topped the league and was postmarked in September of 1910.[/QUOTE] Awesome PC! Love the info on the reverse, and of special interest to me is why would a Champion team from Virginia League after a long season, head down to Chattanooga of the Southern Association for 5 games late in September!? Perhaps the team wasn't going and the player was going to jump in and play with the Lookouts (switch teams & leagues all the time back then...) or get a look for the following year !?! It's interesting to me as it gives us insight into how things were back then... In our time, when you win the title, the season is over. I double checked and the post mark was Sept 12th, so I thought it might be a left over pc, sent around spring training time as 2 out of league opponents would shake some rust off, but no... Its definitely a great timeline piece. Love it. Thnx for sharing ! |
Harry Duker was the park manager of Recreation Park of the Vancouver team. He wrote the 3 postcards below, either signing them or pointing to himself with an arrow. All of them are addressed on the reverse and signed as well.

I love the strong image on this trimmed RP PC of WaJo that I picked up at the recent Chantilly Show (thanks again Mike). This pose of WaJo holding a bat (WaJo was a very good hitting pitcher) is very similar to his pose on his E253 Oxford Confectionary card - I wonder if both photos were taken at the same time.

It is similar indeed, the other side is blank, but the stock is very thick like a postcard. I will have it at the National for examination. It may well be an envelope cut down, but it certainly does not appear to be. It is of the same design as the multitude of FDCs or more aptly commemorative covers.

1911 St Louis Cardinals
3 Attachment(s)
These postcards depict members of the St. Louis Cardinals following the July 11, 1911 derailment of a train on which they were traveling. Fourteen were killed and 47 were injured. The players assisted in the rescue and are shown on a wrecked car. They were taken moments apart (note the left hand of the player seated at the far left).
The postcards belonged to two players involved in the incident, the top coming from Hall of Famer Roger Bresnahan's collection, and the bottom having been mailed by Grover Lowdermilk to his wife 11 days after the wreck. (Both are identified in the key below.) Lowdermilk's message was stark: "After the wreck. I will get off if we come through Odin. Don't know yet whether we will come over the B&O or not. We were a fine looking bunch after that wreck." More details and real photo postcards of the wreck are at http://www.sportingoregon.com/p479278548 Standing: team secretary Herman Seekamp (unverified); Wally Smith; Ivy Wingo; Jack Bliss; Grover Lowdermilk; Bob Harmon; Ed Konetchy; Rebel Oakes. Seated: Arnold Hauser; Rube Ellis; Lee Magee; Steve Evans; Roger Bresnahan. |
