Day 108
1980-83 Baseball Legends... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...allLegends.jpg The card is common, but these are the only wrappers of this style that I have seen. They are very heavy paper stock and I'm assuming they used these initially (they have the typical fold lines from packaging) before replacing them with a cheaper, generic wax wrapper which I will show later in the post. When I purchased this lot, one wrapper stood out from the rest. It appears to have been printed on a different paper stock color (more white than yellow). I know this may not seem like a big deal to some, but when you are a player collector, it's little finds like these that make me continue to search for oddball items. https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...WrapperLot.jpg White wrapper... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...apperWhite.jpg Yellow wrapper... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...pperYellow.jpg The next item is not mine, I am posting to show the different version wrappers. https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...egends%201.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...egends%202.jpg |
Interesting!
I have never seen the wrappers or pack/box from that set. With you 100% on looking for those small (or big) variations as a player collector - I remember having collected bazooka boxes for years when I found out about the 2 size variations!! (Thanks Larry S.) I was completely jazzed and amazed.

1967 Topps Poster... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ToppsPinUp.jpg and the much tougher 1968 O-Pee-Chee Poster (different number and "Ptd. in Canada" on bottom border)... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...CheePoster.jpg |

A number of Clemente original 35 mm slides have come up for auction lately. I recently picked up this one and could not be happier. Its one of the better ones I have seen.
|
Hi Mike,
I’ve seen a lot of those slides and have considered bidding, but wasn’t sure if they were period slides. Do you think they’re from the early 70s? |
They are from the early 1970s. I actually was lucky enough to pick up a couple real cheap and when they arrived they had Malcolm Emmons name written on them. One of them was a Danny Murtaugh image that was actually used for a Sporting News cover.

This is the first time I have seen
the blue one. Thanks for sharing. |

I use to see the blue one every now and then, but lately I’ve only seen the red one. |
That makes two of us

Was Clemente considering retirement early? While I didn't follow him too much while he was active, I've never heard that story. Anyone know any details? . |
Quote:
I think it was more of a hypothetical question posed on the cover. Clemente hit .345 in 1969 and would end up batting .352 in 1970 so he still had it in him. Maybe it's in reference to his nagging injuries but truth be told, I didn't read the article:( |

Day 117
I purchased this next item probably 15+ years ago at the Philly Show in Ft. Washington. 1975 Puerto Rican Lottery ticket... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...teryTicket.jpg And then last year, I was able to pick up some color variations. There are some other colors that I have seen that I don't have, but not sure how much I'll make an effort to obtain. https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...yTicketLot.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...icketLotBk.jpg |

Day 119
Originally I thought these next items were from the 1970s, but they may be more recent (80s). I’m assuming they’re fantasy pieces. ca. 1970s Alarm clock and pocket watch... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...0sWestclox.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...chClemente.jpg |

Of course really like the look of the ‘64 standup set with, for some unknown reason, the Brooks example being my favorite :) |

I don't have them displayed. They're just in a stack. There's other years I don't have, maybe one day. Apparently you and I share the same "sickness". Unfortunately, in the past, that led to me purchasing a lot of newer items.:( Received the photo today, thanks! I'll post it somewhere down the line. |

Yes, I did buy some jersey cards, but I ended up selling them. I will post some newer stuff later on, but it’s mostly memorabilia. |

Just thought about 1 post 1973 item I have as yet been unable track down - in 1975 money magazine had a cover story which featured images of some Clemente cards- I have a copy of just the cover - anyone see or have the magazine? |
Quote:
I have not seen the magazine you are talking about. Can you post a pic of the copy of the cover? There are a lot of reprints of this next item out there, but this is an original. Day 125 1973 Memorial Pinback... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ClementeLg.jpg |

So, I got the year correct and the title wrong. It is "renaissance pittsburgh" magazine. Do you know if that is tied to the Pittsburgh renaissance hotel? A couple of other Clemente items while I'm at it. A rare - 7x9 team issue photo, a more modern print of a great image of Clemente holding a baby, a 1973 Bradenton program with Clemente cover and a 1969? Food land photo album.

Day 128
So the story behind this next item is when my oldest daughter was in elementary school, she was assigned the task of creating a hand puppet (of a famous person) with the "help" of a family member. She knew I was a big fan of Roberto, so he was her choice. Now going into this team project, I knew there was no "I" in team, but I also knew that there was a "me" in team, because from the start, all the work was done by me. This annoyed me at first, but as the project moved forward and I saw how "nice" the puppet was coming along, I started to enjoy it. It got to the point that when my daughter actually wanted to help, I wouldn't let her, because I thought she would mess it up...lol. But wait, I get more pathetic. The day she brought it into school, I really didn't want her to. I thought it was going to get ruined being in her backpack or by classmates touching it. I made her promise not to let her friends play with it... When she came home from school that day, the first thing I said to her was..."Where's my puppet?!?" Sad.......very sad. So without further ado... ca. 1990s Roberto Clemente Hand puppet... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...HandPuppet.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ndPuppetBk.jpg |
It's an illness my friend. Nonetheless that's a great story.
