Boss Schmidt
|

Schmidt is known for giving a cocky young fellow Tiger named Ty Cobb a well deserved beat-down in early 1907, leaving him with a broken nose and black eyes.

Wildfire….anyone know the origin of that nickname?

Quote:
Schulte acquired his nickname, "Wildfire", after seeing a play called "Wildfire" in Mississippi. He then named one of his race horses "Wildfire" and was eventually known by that name, as well. In addition, i learned Schulte was one of only four players to ever make the 20-20-20-20 club, which i never knew existed. 20+ doubles, triples, homers and stolen bases in one year. Cards always mean a lot more when you know something. |

Fred Tenney. The NY and Boston variation was the last card I needed to finish my set, and I got it as part of a large, low grade lot of T3s and was able to sell the others off in the B/S/T. If I was ever going to upgrade any cards from my set, this would be one of the few, but it's a tough and expensive variation from what I saw so I was happy to get this one at a pretty reasonable price.

The Tenney NY is the last card I need to finish the set. Here is my NY & BOS variation.
EDIT to add that I did finally get that Tenney NY in March 2022, scan attached to complete the set. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4b15c90d_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e8be7af7_c.jpg |

Chad, very nice card of the tougher Tenney variation

Tenneys and Thomas. The Tenneys were both hard to get for me. I finally settled on the pinhole for the NY thus far, given it was pretty great looking otherwise. Not sure i would bother to upgrade it.

Pretty strong prices for most of the T3s in REA last night. It looks like the few raw ones were a little more reasonable. Did anyone pick anything up?
|
I am really hoping you picked up that Tenney :-)

I got this Wallace in a lot, it had what seemed like white labels stuck to the front, really stuck. What you see is the best I could do in removing them. EDIT: Added a photo of what it looked like pre-label removal. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9aa72a0d_c.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5e1aa75517.jpg |
Chad, the Wallace looks pretty good if you had to pull labels off of it. A little paper loss in 2 places, but overall not bad.
I was surprised by how much the Tenney went for considering the paper loss as you mentioned and since it was the more common of the variations. |

Owen Wilson for the last day of posting cards for the set. It's been great seeing everyone's T3s, and good luck to those working on the set with completing it.
Also, happy birthday to my son who turns 17 today and is taking his driving test this morning. Unfortunately, more money for car insurance may mean less money for cards. |
|
Thanks for the thread Jay, I've enjoyed it, especially as it coincided with me working to finish the set. I needed 16 to finish the set when the thread started three months ago, and now I'm down to just one. It's been fun.

My "collector grade" Turkey Red player set (no variations, no special backs, just one of each card) plus two Mike Wheat fantasy T3 cards of Honus Wagner and Joe Jackson. (Years ago I begged him to do a T3 Joe Wood as well but he politely declined).

Didn't wish to irritate anybody with my choice of terminology. A decade or so back when I was engaged in scorched earth collecting practices there seemed to be a ton more stuff out there for grabs. T3s routinely showed up on eBay and the pricing was such that 3s and 4s were affordable and not anywhere as stratospheric as they are now. I shied away from the higher graded cards then because they were more expensive and I fancied myself an armpit collector whose main criteria was eye appeal. I loved pinholes in T3s because they kept the price down. There may be a better way to phrase it but it's what I called "collector grade" back in the day. SGC wasn't grading T3s then, just PSA and GAI. I'd have liked to had the whole set slabbed by SGC when they started grading them but it was one of those ideas that never went anywhere. The Matty was graded by GAI - I forget the grade, maybe a four for what it's worth - but I cracked it out of its über-fugly slab. It looked like it was graded by Radio Shack. Really awful.

The final bid on the T3 set in Lelands was $42,757 (so over $50K with the BP) which apparently did not meet the reserve so the set didn't sell. I can't imagine what the reserve was considering the overall condition of the set, but as previously mentioned, with the estimate listed at $150-200K, I think someone was being very overly optimistic.

Base set complete!
Paid more than I would have liked but excited to have picked up the Tenney last night while upgrading my Baker. Base is now complete and now time to get started on the master :-)
If anyone is interested in a SGC 1.5 Baker let me know. Also, I have a few still in SGC slabs. I know ... buy the card ... but I do want to get everything in PSA for consistency. If anyone is looking to swap PSA for SGC let me know. Brian |
