The Bazookas I own are one of my pride and joy's! Many do not know that there are 2 different size boxes for most years - a 25 piece box (like those shown and a 20 piece box - will eventually post a scan). Interestingly in my experience different years prove more elusive in different sizes - 1962 for example - the 25 piece box while far from easy to find is obtainable (with patience and money) - on the other hand - as mentioned in my last post - I own the only 20 piece box I have ever seen with Clemente. 1968 and 1971 were only issued as 25 piece boxes (that I am aware of). A 1960 complete box is my white whale! Combing some of the biggest collections ever sold (Copeland, Halper and others), Speaking to dealers and collectors across the country - I have yet to even see proof that one exists - I have boxes with other players from 1960 - so I pray one day............I can complete my Bazooka complete box run with a 1960 Clemente complete box. |
you weren't kidding, excellent looking boxes Howard.

Great boxes Howard those are a thing of beauty

Day 151
I used to see this next item on a fairly regular basis 10-15 years ago, but they seem to be offered very seldom nowadays. 1973 Caruth Candy cylinder bank... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...menteBankA.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...menteBankB.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...menteBankC.jpg |

You are correct Howard...it came from the bazooka sheet. I don't have a picture but I have seen the Mays box in it's 3d state. I think it was made by Topps back in 71, not someone cutting by hand from the sheet. I may be wrong but Bob may own it.

Ok maybe that's what I saw years ago. The Mays numbered panel.

So were the numbered 71 Bazookas never issued but cut off of sheets?

Day 154
I am 99.9% sure that Roberto is at the far right of the photo. I did do a little research in the past and the only other player this could have been is Earl Francis. But based on the body posture, I think it's Clemente. 1963 Pirates snapshot photo... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ratesPhoto.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...toClemente.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ementeZoom.jpg |

I agree that’s Roberto I think it’s April 9, 1963 opening day at Forbes. I posted this photo earlier. Clemente and Maz getting gold gloves and braves are seen milling around in the background.

Good stuff George! Day 155 Mike posted one of these earlier in the thread. An eBay seller has listed a bunch of these over the last couple of months. Not one of the best he has offered, but some of the nicer images went higher than I wanted to go. 1972 35mm color slide... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ColorSlide.jpg |
Day 156
This next item is one I was burned on in my earlier days collecting Roberto. I purchased it off eBay in the mid 90s, framed it myself, and had it in my collection for a few years before I realized the signature was no good. One day I was looking at some of my Clemente items and noticed that the facsimile signature on the 1971 Arco photo matched the signature on my signed piece. I kept it as a reminder to be more careful when purchasing RC signatures. Over the past 20-plus years, I feel as though I have become much more competent in determining authentic signatures. 1960 Robert Riger print with forged signature:mad:... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...obertRiger.jpg |
duplicate post...WTF
|
VEry interesting
I got burned once on the item itself which was reprinted much later( smaller and darker than original)!! Likely a much less costly mistake than the signed one, but not a happy experience nonetheless.

That 1968 Dexter Press gave me a hearty chuckle. The way it's simply 'signed' Roberto at the bottom gives the illusion he wrote all of that glowing praise about himself, like he was sending a note to a friend. Ha ha.

The next 3 items were issued ca. 2012. They are HOF plaque pinbacks that I believe were awarded/given out at a Little League tournament in California. There are 3 color variations. They are pretty large for pins, 3"x4", and are very HEAVY. Not sure how they could've actually been worn without pulling your shirt off. 2012 Little League HOF plaque pins (set of 3)... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...LeaguePins.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ePinsPhoto.jpg And the next pin I believe was given out to the press during the 2017 Roberto Clemente award presentation (awarded to Anthony Rizzo). 2017 Roberto Clemente Award pin... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...rdPressPin.jpg |

1972 7-11 Slurpee Cup... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...972Cup7-11.jpg There was a lot of 5-6 1972 Slurpee checklist sheets that were auctioned off on eBay within the last 6 mos (I think) that I was an underbidder on. If the winner is a board member and would like to sell one, I would be a buyer. |
Hi Guys,
Regarding the photo of Clemente and Mazeroski receiving their Gold Glove Awards, this cannot have been taken in 1963. Pat Jarvis of the Atlanta Braves is walking by in the background, and the Braves did not move to Atlanta until 1966. My suggestion is that the picture was probably taken on Saturday May 13, 1967 which was during the first of the Braves 3 visits to Pittsburgh that season. Also, it looks like Clemente's 1966 N.L. MVP Award is on the table, so it seems that this was the award presentation day for the Pirates. I would also conjecture that Gene Alley is standing next to Mazeroski since he also won a Gold Glove for 1966. It would seem that the presence of the MVP Award would pinpoint the picture to 1967, and a Saturday day game seems the most likely to schedule for the ceremony. Hope this information is useful, and thanks for all the great Clemente items that have been shown so far. Jeff |
Jeff I think you are correct.

Mike, Do you know what the event was? |
My understanding is that it was an annual father's son's ball game at Three Rivers. The photo I posted originated originated from Steve Blass' personal collection.

1964 Giants are beautiful ! If they were regular size it maybe one of the Topps most collected sets of the 60s. The color, photography, and design are so well done. Let's not forget the backs with another photo of the star and a great write up. the only card missing is Roger Maris. Not sure why he wasn't included.
