All ex-mt and above:
I'm down to 3 high numbers to complete 1972. It's only taken 49 years. I need 28 to complete 1971, mostly mid-highs. But a 1971 Bob Garibaldi in raw 6 or 7 should not be $10. So we'll hold on that. I need about 80 to complete 1966, about 25 highs. Plus Mays and Aaron. May never happen. That would give me complete from 64-65-66, skip 67, then 1968 to 2012 when I abandoned the new stuff. I have a few upgrades in those years to go, but again, that's a hold for now. I have a nice 1964 partial that I might use to underwrite it and a nice 1961 complete set that I'll also move. I thought about upgrading the 61 set, but it'd be mostly moving from some ex-range stars to ex-mt. Especially in the high numbers, it doesn't make sense. Plus I don't like the 61s. |
Nice work Dan! I love those binders and that's the first I've seen graded cards in binders? Great work on the 1970 set...I love mine. My birth year so when I built that one I was super picky...EXMT only and had as much upgrading as I did building. Great set, first post Mantle, but a killer Ryan. For a Seattle guy like me the Pilot cards are special too...
nwfsteve...great update, thats a hell of a run. Don't give up on those 66's...just chip away here and there...patience on the big sets! |

John...how do your store your 48's? That set has always intrigued me... |
I'm currently trying to piece together T206 (easy backs) and 1967 O-Pee-Chee sets. You'd think I'd be further along with the OPC's, but alas, you'd be unbelievable wrong (C'MON!). :p

Probably not the best idea, but especially as someone who doesn't like binders (my '51s even came in one w/ the custom sheets for that size, yet I quickly plucked them out like they were on fire), I haven't looked into a better solution yet  |
Working about three sets right now with one in wait. I am extremely close to being complete on the 1966 Topps set just waiting on the mail to get the last few cards. I just love this set and the design of the cards. The backs are a bit tough to read sometimes but still its my joy. The 67 Set is getting closer. I listed a 77 card lot on the BST boards in hopes to try and find some trades and made a few nice trades so far but here I have 461/609 so far. The Seaver, Carew and a few highs will hurt but I have some trade bait HOF rookies im holding on too to help with cost of that when the time arrives. The 1964 Set is also one of my favorites I am working on and so far I am 387/587. Its quite fun building sets. I hope to get close to completion on the 67 set this year with the 64 coming in behind that. Anyone looking to trade hit me up I have lot of 65 topps and quite a few other years if I can help anyone out.
|
Yep, I have a bunch of commons available for sale or trade too. 1964-1970. Mostly mid grades, but some lower grades too. And have some NM and better from 1964, 1965 and 1970.
Let me know if you need anything. The 64s are especially nice, I plan to put some scans up on BST. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk |

Working on my updated 64 and 67 Checklists now...……...will send to you. Can you PM your email to me. I am mainly looking for strong VGEX to EXMT but will see what ya got. NM may be too good for the sets I am doing. |

Was glad to get the Musial finally in hand....one of those slabbed 2s (SGC) that's the typical "what is wrong with this". When you know they saw something, but I have tilted at every angle and can't see anything wrong with the surface, and otherwise it's a 3.5 or 4 At least it has that eye appeal regardless *shrug* |
I am about 25 cards shy of completing my 67 set.
I need 3 more 66s... Craig, Tebbetts and G Perry Need 5 more 64 stand ups to complete set Need 1 more 69 super. Rich Allan Need 5 more 54 red hearts Need a 2 68 upgrades... all star Brooks and Roberto Need 1 65 bazooka panel- Koufax |

About 3 week ago I started to collect a 71 Topps baseball set from scratch. It's going to be for fun which means that the majority of the cards will be in vg/ex to excellent condition; the only caveats will be no creases or surface wear and unslabbed. Corners? Well, nothing rounded but if there's white present that's fine with me.
So far I've gotten 73 of the high numbers, including the Allen and Baker/Baylor. Star-wise, I 've picked up the Fingers, Carew, Morgan, Ted Williams, Aaron, Yaz, Palmer, and Mays. Next will be the Clemente in vg/ex and whichever stars I can get in the $5-20 range until the funds run out once again. Lots of great set updates...405/407 Ethan on 52's is unreal...
Just WAY over spent on #473 Orioles team card to complete 1964 Topps set...stoked to have that one DONE. Down to needing 212 cards to complete the 1960's Topps...getting close. |
Well, my 1954 Red Heart set is complete and in a most unexpected way.
Today in my mail was this card with a note that it was a gift! This was from a board member here that I have never met! There are ALOT of great, kind and generous people out there. Too often we let loud voices tell us otherwise. What a blessing! https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=30151 |

Just got back into cards a few months back, started on the 1910 T218's and am currently up to 80/153. Have both Jack Johnson cards taken care of, as rough as they are, so it's all downhill from here. Just need to find the time to dedicate to searching for the remaining ones.

For the second time in my collecting career...I have FINALLY COMPLETED the 1967 Topps set!! Stoked...and super proud of where I am at. Only need a couple of upgrades as I really focused on tight cards this go around. I do have a couple of highs that are not up to standard...but I do love to upgrade a finished set. Here is my last card...last go around it was #487 Tom Reynolds...this time it was #587 Rookies...a pretty tough card to get clean so I bought a graded version I plan on freeing...:)

I have sort of stumbled into working on a raw 1960 Fleer ATG set. I didn't mean to, I just found a trove of them in stellar condition at the 2019 National for a buck each, then picked up an auction lot with Gehrig, Cobb and Wagner in great shape, then found more and just got into it. My latest one of note is a Williams that looks way better than the PSA 5 grade (I have a PSA 8 that I submitted a few years ago too; probably gonna sell that one) and will be liberated from the plastic tomb when I introduce it to Mr. Dremel. |
I've reached 100 cards out of the 1952T low number set.

Thanks to my comments on this thread (THANKS BOB!!!!!) I have now completed my 1962 Topps set, that's a first ever for me. Really enjoyed putting this set together, finding out all the SP cards and nuances...and enjoyed the Roger Maris theme throughout...truly deserved after the historic 1961 season. Last card came via net54 as mentioned, and I do want to thank bobsbbcards once again for a STELLAR card, perfect to finish on. Those Rookie Parades are no easy task!!!

Congrats to everyone.
I'm just home from a card show and I finished my favorite set of all time...the 53' topps set. The last card was this Mays and after prices shot up I didn't think I would ever get it. A longtime dealer friend hooked me up and even took a loss for me to be able to afford this one. Very thankful. https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=30262 |

Small but difficult set to complete. Picked up three cards recently after going 1+ years without seeing an addition.

The high numbers in this set is a bit daunting. I’m not being as selective as you, but am 538/613 = 88% with mostly high numbers to go. Just got my Carew at a 3.5 grade but nice eye appeal. I switched to 1959 Topps for a breather since I love that set aesthetics and am 274/572 = 48% right now. |
1969 Topps
I’m working on 1969, down to 15 left - Bench, Seaver, Clemente, Mays and some commons. Hoping to have it done shortly then will tackle 71 or 73 as I have about half of each.

Getting really really close on 73, also nearing the home stretch on 71s. Progress is in my signature.

Cool thread
I have not counted my cards yet, but I am easily over halfway done with 1956 but I do not have any of the 3 toughest cards, the mantle, clemente, and koufax. My 57 set is just getting off the ground because I had the chance to buy a mint 57 Berra for a good price. I have a 1964 set that is going well and is high grade, but I do not have the mantle. My 1968 set is probably my best because I have really nice versions of the 3 most expensive cards, Ryan, Bench, and Mantle, but I am only halfway done on completing it. My 1971 set is 70% complete and I have all the toughest cards except I havent found an Aaron I am happy with. My 1972 is over 80% and I have all the difficult cards in relatively very high grades. Having fun reading the other answers! I have 3 beautiful Mickey Mantle cards but only 1 falls in a set I collect. My 1958 and 1961 Mantles are probably future trade bait for tough cards I need.

I just bought the last card for my 1965 set!
I figured I would need something to do over the winter since COVID restrictions meant we weren't going anywhere. Before COVID I didn't have any sets. I now have 1965 and 1970-2020 Topps Baseball, 1970 and 1980-87 Topps Football, 1989 Score Football, and 1988 Fleer Basketball (including stickers). 1965, 1970-1974 were put together the rest were purchased as complete sets. Most sets were from N54 board members. I may start another set but plan on relaxing until the winter. N54 was a tremendous help! Thanks, everyone! |

Not planned at all, I actually got the last card needed for both my 57 and 58 Topps sets on the same day yesterday! Exciting to have those done and also winding down my 59 set...going for the all vintage modern size sets...lol.
Here is my last card for the 58 set...an iconic card with both Mick and Hank. Got beat out on many auctions over the last couple weeks. Missed out again yesterday and in my frustration I throw an offer out on a newly listed BIN OBO card moments after the auction. My offer was automatically accepted (had it not, I would have just bought at full boat, I was that frustrated, haha). I raced to this BIN as I know there were several bidders in the one I just lost and I also have seen the next closest BIN disappear immediately following tough actions like the one we had...:) https://i.ibb.co/qDzZQLG/58-Hank-Mick.jpg Never thought this would be my last 57 Topps card...I have completed it before and last time it was Sandy Koufax. Got him done early this time and had a couple of great breaks on the infamous "middle series". Second to last card was Whitey Herzog believe it or not. I got Brooks/Mickey/Frank pretty early in the process. After dealing with 600 card sets with high numbers from the 60s a 407 set went together pretty fast...last card, Bobby Richardson rookie. Believe it or not this PSA 7 (ST) was the best deal I as just went and bought a BIN to be done...and the stain in the back is very light wax...no biggie. I'll free this one and pantyhose that wax...nice clean card... https://i.ibb.co/4P5yRCp/57-Bobby.jpg 1957 is one of my favorite years...just classic cards and stoked to once again have it in my collection. My last 57 complete set I sold to pay for the daughter my wife and I adopted 8 years ago...money well spent...:) She is going to put the last card in the notebook for me when it arrives (and is freed). As for the 58s, lets just say that I know there are some cool individual cards...I'm just glad to have it done and all bindered up...haha... |
Huge congratulations, John!! That’s fantastic to finish off two in one day! :)

Here's a story- In 1974 our corner liquor store for a while had packs of 1970s high series for sale. Maybe the owner found them in the back, I don't know, but they were the high series at 10 cents a pack! Of course, we opened them, not knowing anything about scarcity, distribution, and frankly high numbers. No, we didn't try the gum. Phil aka Tere1071 upgrading my 53 Bowman color and 71 Topps baseball sets now working on a 70 set when the cards arrive. Anyone reading this has stars in vg/ex to ex condition for trade or sale? |
This is cheating cause it's hoops, but it goes with my '50s baseball run (so it's ok since I mentioned baseball too) :)
Got a 196/198 partial to complete my '81-'82 basketball set. Now all I need is the rest of the '88 Fleer (other than Jordan base and Rodman) and a few '89 Fleer commons to complete an '80s basketball run. Maybe after that's done, I'll do some work on the missing '60 to '85 baseball sets and singles. But that's a very long term project |

Historic Mail Day for Me

In the summer of 2018, I purchased my first 1952 Topps low number card: a PSA 1 Willie Mays (since cracked).
Today, I received in the mail, a 1952 Joe DeMaestri - the last card I needed to complete the 52 Low Number series. Putting this together was probably the most fun I've had collecting. Thanks to Net54, ebay, and online sellers like the Battersbox, it wasn't hard to find the cards, but it was so much fun watching my binder fill up. I managed to pick up a few of the bigger high numbers along the way too (no Mantle), and now I'll move on to working on that in earnest. Here's to collecting. |
Chris...those 52's look SWEET...I'm really jealous!! I'm working my way down to those, can't wait. NICELY DONE!!!!

Congratulations, Chris!!! :)

Great job, Chris!

1977 Topps Baseball

So very close…. |
Thank you, Dale, John, and Bob. What a fun set to collect. Loved reading the card backs of players I wasn’t overly familiar with. How about the back of the Eddie Waitkus card beginning “shot by a crazed girl…”! They don’t write baseball card bios like that anymore.
As far as the high numbers, I already have Jackie, Mathews, Pee Wee Reese, and Campanella so I know I’m off to a good start, I just don’t see how I ever get a Mantle. But we’ll see where the path takes me. |

1977 Topps
638/660
8 cards today and more coming this week. I hope to be done by the end of this month. Then onto the 1978 Topps set…… |
I've begun to work on Topps Baseball sets from 1970 and 1972. So far, I've purchased a 1972 starter set off eBay and have deals worked out for another starter set from a member on this site. Both are missing a considerable amount of high numbers and stars.
I began to purchase and trade for the 70s set though here and off of eBay. I also have a deal worked for some stars and high numbers, it's just a matter of sending the funds. What I need is a fairly comprehensive starter set of 550-600+ cards in excellent to near-mint condition. There have been a few on eBay, but the asking prices are high for the quality of the cards. The 1971 set was easy to assemble and somewhat difficult to upgrade. The prices of the semi and semi-high numbers for 70 and 72 will have to go at a slower pace due to the prices and the number of missing cards in each set. |

It's been slow numbers-wise over the past few months for my 1967 set build. I've only been able to add 40 cards since my last update in February, BUT many were HOFers so quality has certainly been there: Aaron, Banks, Brock, Drysdale, Cepeda, Ford, Killebrew, Mantle, F Robby, Stargell. I've also added 6 high #s and several leaders, teams, and the tough 7th series checklist. Count stands at 544/609. I need 65 cards and 34 are high #s. No surprise there!

I saw a decent looking PSA 1 Mantle on eBay last week for ~$35k or best offer so prices do seem to maybe be coming back down a little? I just don’t know. Decisions decisions. |

Like you are with your Mantle, I am the same way when it comes to Mathews. If I want it, I am going to have give up something else in order to do so. Outside of Mathews, the next big cards for me are Campy, Wilhelm and Dickey. Once those are obtained, the rest should be much easier on the pocketbook. I still need Hal Greg, Randy Jackson, Bubba Church, Warren Hacker, Russ Meyer, Bob Hooper, Hal Jeffcoat, Bob Kelly, Bob Cain, Bob Del Greco, John Kucab, George Crowe, Cookie Lavagetto, Bob Thorpe, Billy Hoeft, Jim Turner, Ebba St Claire and Bob Schultz so I continue to keep my eyes open. It will be nice to someday say I have now completed it, but at the same time, I am going to enjoy the journey. |
Quote:
Great looking high numbers Dale, congrats on getting to 385/ 22 to go. I think you are catching the market at the right time and once you get as close as you are on this set, the completion bug bites and suddenly you end up pushing harder for completion. |
