If you look at every page of this thread, you'll see some great pennants!

If we can increase the quantity of collectors i think the mid range pennant market will see a big rebound.

Good to see the old pennant thread return. Here's a few more of mine...

Beauties Chris!

Bumpus Jones 11-12-2015 02:19 PM

Thanks, Greg. What's new with you? Shoot me an email when you get a minute...

ooo-ribay 11-12-2015 02:30 PM

Chris - are the 1939 and 1940 full size? Great crossover appeal with the Pepsi logo.

perezfan 11-12-2015 02:33 PM

Those are some real "toughies"... All three of them...

Never seen the white 1940 version... Beauty!

Great stuff, Chris!

I could certainly be wrong, but I'm thinking the modern, QUALITY pennants, such as Winning Streak, might actually be worth something in 100 years. The quality is really good and the higher retail price keeps them from being sold in huge quantities.

Tigerden 11-12-2015 02:41 PM

Wow Chris- The 1940 Reds Champs Pennant with the grommets is killer! Never saw that one before. Thanks for posting. Adam

Thanks, fellas. Rob, I would call both white ones about 3/4 size. The red is full size. Here's the smaller version of the pepsi pennant. Its about half the size of the other, but no pepsi ...

I was thinking about that last week and I 100% agree... I bought the Golden Gophers Mascot versions While not pennants I think the Danbury Mint stuff could have a big rise in value as well

Rob, you never overpay if you like it and, that is a gorgeous pennant. Nice

That's s great pennant Rob!

Far more scarce than its 1951 All Star Game "sibling".

I had an itchy finger on that one, but am glad you got it! Probably another 5-6 years before another one turns up

anyone ever see this one or any other teams in this style?

That is exceedingly rare, and absolutely authentic.

A group of those surfaced about two years ago on eBay. I was only able to land the Red Sox (Batting Sock Mascot) and the White Sox. They are distinguished by the unique logos and the Criss-cross stitching in the middle of the felt reinforcement strip... Not meant to accommodate a stick, apparently!

Great post and great pennant. Only one I've ever seen in 25 years of collecting!

mrkrab 02-04-2016 12:20 PM

Would love to see your two like it if you ever get some down time! Thanks for the info. Any idea of age? its made so oddly that I'm a little thrown off.

perezfan 02-04-2016 12:38 PM

Circa 1951 or so. There were some really funky ones, including s great St. Louis Brownie. My stuff is packed away (recent move) but when I uncover it, I'll try to post some pics.

Lately I cannot attach photos from my cell. The "Manage Attachments" function no longer works for me. Anyone else having this issue?

I love getting your pennant knowledge, Mark! Your story of this series reminded me of a group on ebay from maybe 10 years ago. I got the NY Giants one. Some went for a bit of money, others for nothing. I think the seller had a complete set of both leagues. I have a picture somewhere of all he had (would be happy to dig it up if anyone is interesting). These pennants supposedly were a CUBAN issue. Without digging mine out, I think they are all about 20 inches long.

Bumpus Jones 02-05-2016 01:47 PM

Hey Chris - sorry, this is all I could find. My notes also tell me they were a Venezuelan issue, not Cuban. eBay prices were Tigers $114, Cardinals $16, Cubs $66, Red Sox $10, Giants $16 and Phillies $27.

Bumpus Jones 02-05-2016 07:16 PM

Thanks, Rob. I've never seen any of those...

perezfan 02-06-2016 12:22 AM

Those are terrific, Rob! Darn, I somehow missed those but glad you got the Giants. I can see the Hispanic influence... Some work really well and some "not so much".

Very cool stuff, and I agree that oddball Giants pennant is indeed from the same series referenced in the original post.

Take care,
Mark

I just picked this up...it was represented as a 1951 pennant. It is 3/4 size. I know the Brooklyn Dodgers used this exact same stadium graphic. Were there others? Also, does anyone think this pennant may be earlier than 1951? The NY Giants also won 3 pennants in the 1930's.

The phillies won the pennant in 1950. Here is the same design.

perezfan 02-09-2016 11:12 AM

Right... Definitely 1951. I've seen a dated version of the same Giants pennant.

MK 02-09-2016 03:09 PM

I have the Cubs version which I always thought was from the 1930s. Egner's guide identifies it being 1945. I must sadly report these are the only options for my Cubs.

Bay Area Pennants

Here are some pennants. I collect stuff related to the SF bay area, with an emphasis on San Jose and Santa Clara items. I believe that I am the only person in the world who really collects Santa Clara University items (winners of the 1937 and 1938 Sugar Bowls, and 1950 Orange Bowl). The Santa Clara Padres pennant is pretty rare... a one year team that happened to include Joe Maddon.

I grew up in San Jose and attended Santa Clara University, but now live in Texas. I have many more Santa Clara pennants and several related to various iterations of the San Jose minor leage baseball team (Bees, Royals, Indians, Expos, Missions).

Here is the Red Sox pennant from that odd early 1950s series. Note the different 'take' on the Batting Sock mascot, and the criss-cross stitching on the reinforcement strip.

That Royal Rooters pennant is a killer. The color is so rich for how old it is. I don't think the wear takes away from it at all.

Mark-

Your room is looking fantastic....even if it is a bit D**ger heavy! :p

Do any of you guys own this pennant? I've seen two in my lifetime; each owned by a friend of mine. One is bright red; the other a very faded green. I would have thought a few more from an "event" would have survived. Maybe if Seals Stadium had held more customers...

perezfan 02-16-2016 11:49 AM

Rob-

I don't have that one, but certainly admired it the one time I'd seen it before this. What a beauty.

The room's progress has been put on hold, but do note... Every Dodgers pennant you see is Brooklyn. You will not see an LA pennant on the wall. I (begrudgingly) acknowledge the Brooklyn Dodgers as an iconic franchise, but that's where it ends. The 1970s Reds despised the Dodgers almost as much as the Giants did... Maybe even more at the time. The rivalry was intense back when the Reds were actually viable, and both teams were in the NL West.

That was the Giants' "down time" era, but you've certainly had the last laugh in recent years. I may not live to see another winning season in Cincy :(

perezfan 02-16-2016 11:51 AM

Also... There will be some killer Giants pennants on display if/when I can ever get this project put to bed. Stay tuned!

I lived in Ohio in the 1970s. I remember watching the Carlton Fisk WS foul pole homer as I sat in a bar at Ohio University. I was one of the few rooting for the Sox. The first six years of the 1980s were also a "down time" for the Giants!

Good color but the tip is messed up. Could you imagine the furor if a baseball team came out with a pennant like this today? These Dodger pennants have to be the most politically incorrect ever...or are they?

BTW, is there any way to repair the tips of pennants or is that just taboo?

If you iron the tip and it's still all there, you can use a square of iron on fabric mend from the back side and then trim the excess. Whether that's taboo or not, I couldn't tell you. :p Great pennant!

One of my favorites! :)

perezfan 02-26-2016 12:21 PM

It will look better if you trim off the hanging/loose portion, and get it to resemble a point at the end. This one is actually a good candidate for that, as you can easily envision the end product with a better (albeit not perfect) tip. Many examples are not conducive to trimming.

Take it a little at a time, as you don't want to be too hasty. Nothing wrong with doing that, as long as you disclose it, when it comes time to sell. Pennant collectors typically do not want altered items... So you'd be doing this simply to approve its appearance and please yourself. Altering it for resale (without proper disclosure) borders on sleazy seller territory, IMO.

Great pennant... A classic! As for politically incorrect, I'd still put some of those Big Nose Wahoo Indians Pennants and Screaming Braves wielding a Tomahawk ahead of it.

Thanks for the tip on the tips. I was actually afraid to snip the tip, but since I didn't buy it to flip, I might give it a rip - just a little clip.

For a couple of pennants with a little of the tip missing, I've taken a small clip with sharp scissors in the shape resembling the tip from the back of the main portion of the pennant BEHIND the strip on the left side. If the strip goes all the way to the edge, you can't tell anything is missing (from the front). Then take some strong tape, cut on one end in the shape of the new tip, and long enough to adhere to the back of the pennant, and attach the faux tip.
