Circa late 1940's Ewell Blackwell personal model Goldsmith glove
7 Attachment(s)
I'm happy to have added this circa 1948 Ewell Blackwell Goldsmith glove.
This was Goldsmith's top of the line model during this era. Blackwell aka "The Whip" came the closest to duplicating Johnny Vander Meer's "Vander Meeracle" of hurling two back to back no-hitters on June 22, 1947. He lost his 2nd consecutive no-hitter with 1 out in the 9th inning while teammate Vandy watched from the top step of the Reds dugout. Alas, it wasn't to be, but Blackwell had an amazing 1947 season, winning 16 consecutive games without a loss... |

Great stuff guys! Let's keep the Blackie theme going with this circa 1950 pin.

Looks like Ewell Blackwell is having his moment in the sun today...;):D

Reds in the 1948 Bowman Set
Here are my signed 1948 Bowman Reds cards...the only Reds player included in the set that I'm missing is Herm Wehmeier. If anybody has one, or knows of any leads, I would greatly appreciate the help! (Wehmeier, Buddy Kerr and Dave Koslo are the only 3 cards I need to complete my signed 1948 Bowman set!)

I took photos of my game used bats of these Reds sluggers and superimposed them over the photo which I took at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum this year. A little more interesting than just photos of the game used bats.
The Frank Robinson bat is from the 1961 to 1963 period. When I purchased the bat it was already signed by Frank. I went to a card show here in Cincinnati a few years later and Frank was a signing guest. I waited until his signing period was done and asked his promoter if I could get a photo of Frank and I holding the bat. His promoter and Frank said no problem. It is a great photo, no charge, and a keepsake treasure as just a year later Frank passed. A great memory and all I had to do was ask. Frank could not have been nicer and really enjoyed seeing one of his gamers. Greg |
These game used bats are part of my vast Reds collection of gamers covering years from 1909 (Tom Downey), 1919 World Series Reds players, 20's through the 50's / 60's Reds, Big Red Machine 1975/1976 (all but 1976 Mike Lum) era, 1990 World Champion Reds, and my favorite 1999 Reds team.

Thanks for the kind words Scott, Mark and Rob. Greg these are some wonderful items you've been posting as are the other folks here recently. Keep up the good work everyone!

Cincinnati Reds auctions are selling mystery MLB authenticated jerseys for $150. Still available. I decided to take a gamble. Money goes to the Reds community fund.

I'm a big fan of the 1938-40 Reds, and I just couldn't pass this up.
Attachment 431014 Jim "The Milkman*" Turner won 14 games with a nice 2.89 ERA for the World Champion 1940 Reds, and later went on to be a pitching coach for ten pennant-winning clubs, including the 1961 Reds. The photo is crystal-clear and the vintage fountain pen signature is real nice – but the reason I couldn't pass it up was the inscription: "To Joe the Great Magician" *He was called "The Milkman" because he was – you guessed it – a milkman in the off season. |

My Reds Auction items finally arrived by horse drawn mail cart. Tucker Barnhart game used 2020 bat. I decided to get it when he won his second gold glove. And I bought a mystery jersey bag, just hoping to get a name I recognized. I got Tyler Mahle, team issued, Jackie Robinson weekend jersey with Negro League Centennial patch. So that was a win! Happy with both purchases.
