Picked this up, had been looking for this for some time, a WGN ‘54 Indians
|

Domer … remember that other ‘54 Indians we discussed a few days ago? These rectangular “pennants” seem to be from the same maker. It’s pretty much a certainty. Curious, do you still think these are Trench?
|
Good observation. Well ... I never thought of that banner (or the similar Dodgers and Yankees versions) as being a strong candidate for Trench; but, I certainly couldn't rule them out. They do look alike, don't they?
Unfortunately, these banners were all made pre-1957, which is about when Tom Storm's father purchased Trench. When I last spoke with Mr. Storm, he could not recall ever making banners (or, "rectangular pennants); but he wasn't really involved in the company until the early 1960s, well after these were made. Whoever did make these banners, I believe they only made them for the league champions in '52 , '53, and '54, correct? Are there others? I can't recall ever seeing a '54 N.Y. Giants banner that complements this Indians one. But if one was made ... I know two guys who'll know ;) Here's the only vintage photograph I know of showing a banner like this: https://pennantfever.weebly.com/who-we-are.html This photo was taken in the center field bleachers at Yankee Stadium during the '53 World Series. I believe there's ample evidence that Yankee Stadium, in the mid-1950s, was a Sport Service ballpark. If so, that makes it more likely this banner was supplied to them by Trench. |

Curious to get thoughts on this one which just ended tonight for $2300 (plus $5.70 for standard shipping )
Orig 1911 VANDERBILT CUP AUTO RACE Souvenir PENNANT 34" Savannah Georgia https://ebay.us/qOXEAH It seems way off to me (despite the sellers guaranteed authenticity). It's very white for 110 years old. Also interesting, it looks nothing like 1910 or 1912 Vanderbilt Cup pennants, neither of which has sewn on letters or images. In fact there is another 1911 Cup pennant that does closely resemble the 1910 and 1912 pennants (and it sold for $5700+ on ebay about 10 years ago). No pin holes seems unlikely as well. Lastly, the image of the car in tonights auction shows only a single driver, while all other pennants have two in the car. I don't know enough about the race or these pennants to know for sure but I see enough red flags that I wouldn't have bid on it. Also below are the other 1910 thru 1912 Vanderbilt Cup pennants... |

A couple of new arrivals today.
Catalog refs: NYG032-TREN and NYYK053-TBC Not the rarest items but I was happy to pick them up in good condition at a good price. Any ideas about the manufacturer of the Yankees pennant? |

The Yankees pennant looks good to me. Couldn’t tell you who made it.

The Yankees pennant is early 70’s utilizing the older styles. That style was used from the 50’s all the way to I guess the 70’s. The pennant needs to be dated on the material and stitching. Generally these pennants were already using synthetic stitching for the piping, but not all. The earliest of synthetic pennants still used regular fabric string / thread for stitching the piping.

The "New York" script matches other known ADFLAG pennants from that era for the Yankees and (AFL) Jets. |

I have that same Yankees version on softer felt. They went with that particular design for many years. The really stiff ones are late 1960s - early 1970s. I have seen them so brittle that they actually crack (not something that real felt would ever do, and that's where I draw the line in my personal collection, haha). |
Beware of some pennant lots in the Huggins and Scott Auction that just opened. I see at least 3 lots with reproduction pennants that are not disclosed, and are being sold as original...

Mark, looks like they corrected 913. But yeah the others are just as bad. I mean, c’mon now, they can’t tell???

On a related note, I wish Mitchell & Ness stamped their repros. Their existence screws up the market. |

Lot 2059 in the current REA is a great photo, as it puts a specific 1916 date on some Brooklyn Pennants we've discussed here. Very rare to be able to put a specific date on pennants this early. There just aren't many "pennant photos" like this to have survived.
My dumb new laptop won't allow me to copy/paste a link, but thought that many here would find the photo interesting. |

Anyone know of any Superbas/Robins pennants besides the ones from the bakery? |
Looks like d**gers fans were goofy, even 100+ years ago.

The photo was taken at game #1 of the 1916 World's Series at Braves Field; and, the woman on the far right is Mrs. Ed McKeever, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers--er, Robins--er, Superbas! And to Greg's point, this has to be the earliest Brooklyn pennant to feature the nickname, "Dodgers," thereon because most simply read "Brooklyn" from that era. Apparently, they stocked up on pennants before boarding their train to Boston because there's no less than 5 Brooklyn pennants depicted in the photo if you look carefully enough. |

Chicago Pennant Co. college wool pillows
1 Attachment(s)
I was thrilled to pick this off of a recent eBay run of several different colleges, all in perfect condition. This one has a cool leather insignia. There is a large tag "manufactured by Burton-Dixie, Chicago, Ill." and a smaller tag "manufactured by Chicago Pennant Co., 6542 Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, Illinois." Anyone have a guess on the vintage of the this beauty?

So... I think that the pennant on top more or less solves the mystery of whether or not the one below is an Astros pennant.

I found a nice copy of the elusive 1969 cloth Giants pennant on ETSY. I think I've bought 3 pennants on ETSY in 10 years of insomnia induced searching.

Random, obscure, meaningless observation made to keep this thread from sinking …. Here’s a 1969 Trench Pilots pennant, we’ve all seen it before, but this has a MLB trademark like nothing I’ve seen on any other pennants …
Anyone else have any oddities to share? |
Also curious to know if any cool pennants were spotted at the National … anyone?

That Campanella All Stars Pennant is a Holy Grail. However, I guess it somehow didn't make the cut for being displayed. Pretty amazing. |

I did see the rectangular “pennant” … two of them … so much harder to find than the ‘54 Indians …. |

P.S. I guess the d**gers didn’t feel they could catch the Giants with only 17 All-Stars on their roster.

While the museum used to be open to the public, it is now closed. I met Gary years ago when we both loaned items to the Dodger Stadium pop-up museum (he loaned over 95% of the items shown there and still loans items for exhibit in the stadium), and he graciously allows me to visit the museum from time to time. BTW, most of the pennants on exhibit are simply nailed to the walls. The Campy pennant pictured above is framed because it will be part of an exhibit Gary is putting together of Negro League players which will be on display at the Stadium. |
I just looked through the museum on google images. Wow!
|
I take it the galleries on his website are just there to tease us? I see he has a Los Angeles Rams one. Not seeing it will haunt me until I finally breakthrough. Anyone get them to open?
|
Found pictures and video on their facebook page. Not a lot and not very good quality, but I saw "some" of the Rams stuff. I guess I'll add this to the itinerary for my next Rams game.
|
Good lord!!!!!
Glad to see he has some Bonds stuff! What did/does Gary do for money? http://www.ora.tv/larrykingnow/2013/...res-0_t8qjpguc |
Thanks for posting that interview. Amazing.
Are there bigger private collections out there? |

Question: Have any of us actually seen any these pennants (e.g. are there any known surviving copies)? |

Recent pick-up of one of the 1963 Dodger pennants that Kyle wrote about on his blog. Unfortunately it was sash-less. Luckily Kyle could help me out and bring the pennant back to life.

Epic Pennant Being Auctioned
I hate to out an auction, but this one is so extraordinary and I know so many here would be interested in bidding...that it just seems too selfish to stay quiet about it. Good luck all.
1885 Cubs World Championship Pennant https://ebay.us/rp6yAO |

Recent pick-up. Yes, it is very faded from the original blue, and looks like someone ripped it from the wall, damaging the tip to where it is literally hanging on by a thread. Since it had the elusive 1955 year and "World Series Champs" printed on it, I would have expected it to be quite popular in Brooklyn, despite the plain graphics. But the only other one I have seen was in an ITPC auction years ago, and that one originated from Walter Alston's estate.
Then Kyle visited Dodger Stadium and his eagle eyes spotted this photo of the Dodgers promoting a new stadium in Brooklyn, with this pennant flying proudly above. Always nice seeing these pennants in photos. Thanks Kyle. Attachment 472942 Attachment 472966 |

Maybe you could remove that redundant 3rd tassel, and use the material to do that knitting/weaving procedure, to strengthen/rebuild the torn tip. You'll never find a better material match. I forget what the procedure is actually called, but someone here will remember, as it wasn't long ago that we discussed the YouTube video ("Felting Needles" or something like that  ) |
Quote:
|
Good thought Mark, but yes, it is cloth. I would probably screw it up trying to repair it. The tip is all there, just half-way ripped off. It looks ok for display purposes.

Great Dodgers pennant, never saw it before. One thing you can do with the faded cloth pennant is brush it gently. This can reveal a richer blue underneath. Something I’ve done with keepers, not for resale. Although I think it looks cool as is …
|
Great pennant, Rick! That used to be blue??
Looks like it faded more to brown than the usual grey... |
