Who were the others? According to his biography at SABR, Grasso suffered quite a bit as a POW.

#78 Carl Furillo Known as the "Reading Rifle," Furillo was the master of right field at Ebetts. A somewhat complicated man whose career with the Dodgers ended in acrimony, his story as told in Roger Kahn's "The Boys of Summer" is an interesting read.

Thank you for the information, Al. I'm familiar with Donateli, Howell, and Marchildon. That was a tremendous sacrifice on their part.

Al - Kiner was apparently an obsessive celebrity sniffer of sorts, and also an even more obsessive autograph hound. During his time as a broadcaster, he once found himself on a cross-country plane flight with actor Paul Newman. Of course, they were both in the first-class section, but seated some distance apart. Ralph went up the aisle to introduce himself and asked Newman to sign several times, but the annoyed star refused, said he had never heard of Kiner, and the two had an angry exchange in front some amazed fellow passengers. Apparently, Ralph had a lot more luck with the female stars.;)

Was the change from Hemus to Keane as manager of the Cardinals in 1961 what kept Bob Gibson a Cardinal ?

Tere1071 02-17-2023 05:53 PM

1 Attachment(s)
#85 Solly Hemus There is a story that when Solly was traded from the Cardinals, he wrote a heartfelt letter to Gussie Bush, then owner of the franchise. Essentially, Hemus thanked Mr. Bush for having him on the Cardinals. Gussie was quite taken with the letter, which helped Hemus gain the managerial position for the Cardinals later on. His tenure was unsuccessful and he was replaced by Johnnie Keane during the 1961 season.
