A couple more newer/modern cards I decided to grab last month.
I tell myself I need to thin out my collection but I guess I'm not very good at that? :o

Great looking cards, Anthony.
Ron Francis's card is criminally underrated. Top 100 player of all time and they can still be had fairly cheap.

Ronald Michael Francis Jr. (born March 1, 1963) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He is the general manager of the Seattle Kraken that inaugurated its first season in 2021. Drafted fourth overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, Francis played 23 seasons in the NHL for the Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Upon retiring from professional ice hockey in 2004, Francis stood second all-time in career assists (1,249), behind only Wayne Gretzky; fifth in career points (1,798); third in games played (1,731); and 27th in career goals (549).

In 2017, Francis was named one of the hundred greatest NHL players in history.

Larry, really nice group of cards. If you have any duplicates on the 75-76 Topps set I only have a small handful left to get. I'm down to the following to complete it: 75 (Schock), 140 (Dionne), 143 (Nanne), 280 (Pronovost), and 325 (Flyers Leaders). Thanks.

LuckyLarry 02-07-2023 02:26 PM

I just checked my duplicates no luck sorry!

Larry, thanks for checking, much appreciated.

Ok, I have not been collecting hockey cards for a long time.
But a good friend pulled this card on Sunday and offered to
me and I thought why not. What sold me on the card was
that it says it is an actual game used shield. Not event worn
or manufactured shield. So it is the real deal. Thanks for taking a look.

Nice group of cards there. Love the 70/71s, and of course Gretz and Kurri are tough to beat. Are you working on that 70/71 set?

No not working on any sets.Did them all a long time ago.But I would sooner spend $100 on vintage than a few packs of new stuff.Maybe only 1 pack.:D

Well congrats and lucky you on finishing those sets, still plodding myself. Very much agree, can't bring myself to spend on new stuff unless it is Kurri.

And off topic, but I still have your non-sport want list on my phone as those '72 and '78 Kelloggs you have call to me.

I guess I am a different type collector than most. I have done all those sets. Some as many a few times.
I did all the modern day hockey sets from 1951 up to about 1990. But once the chase is over for that
last card. My enjoyment for that set is done.So I rarely keep anything.Just move on to build another set.
The only thing I am 100% loyal to is my Scottie Upshall collection.I am forever expanding it.There are a few
cards of his that have allotted me for years. But when they ever become available I will be ready.
When you talk about 72 and 78 Kellogg's do you mean the baseball part sets that I have? Thanks.

Yeah, the Kellogg's baseball ones you have. And good to know about Upshall, in case I ever run across anything.

A few recent modern P/U's. Mitch Marner is an incredible player, which most hockey fans know, but here's a couple more of relative newcomers/rookies that I also think will become great players as well someday.

underrated set

camaro69 05-14-2023 12:01 PM

For most Canadians these are all so familiar to you. But for our friends that collect hockey from other countries.
Well they may not be aware of these. From 2003 MacDonald's restaurants a set of trophies were released.
I have always had a liking for the Stanley Cup. So when I had a chance to pick up a few I did so.They make
any display of your hockey cards, pop. Most are still in their original box.But as you can see some are not.

Nice cups! I remember those and the others McDonalds were offering back then but never, for whatever reason, grabbed any.

That is quite the grab of new stuff there.
You have some great cards and some with some value too.
The UD Beehive Crosby cards are underrated, imo. True RC's but for whatever reason they don't command the premiums some of his others do?
I purchased a 9 back a few years ago as I personally think it is a great looking card. They have come up in value some it seems, but just not like some of his others.

Camaro,

Are these recent acquisitions or just part of your personal collection?

No they are all recent pickups. The graded cards I just got on Sunday. As you can see by my post it is within a
few days of picking them up. I really do not have a PC collection except for my Scottie Upshall collection. It is
massive and I never trade or sell anything from it. Just keep adding to it.In most cases everything that is not
Scottie Upshall is for trade toward my vintage non sport needs. I love to build sets and I have about 10
non sport sets on the go that I would love to put to bed. I do not like selling anything unless it is in person.
As we all know, there does not seem to be any two people with the same idea on what condition a card
is in. So in person that is taken care of.If yo see a card I have and would like to have it., Then we discuss
condition, value. Once we agree and you leave me your cash and you leave with your new purchase then
the deal is done. Not so easy on the internet. Back and fort with someone 4000 miles away is not how I
want to do a deal. Sorry about this long response. The short answer should have been. All are recent pickups.Thanks.

Congrats, Scott.

I'm not putting together the set but I did manage to find the 2 you need on a vintage hockey facebook site for decent money if you haven't looked there yet?

Good Luck. :)

Hi Irv,

My cat generated a large vet bill so I'm out of action for a month or two. :o

What group are you looking in? I have a couple I'm in but don't think I've seen these two cards for a few months on Facebook.

Thanks,
Scott

Sorry to hear about your cat, Scott. Currently dealing with one of ours now as well.

The 2 above I purchased likely 2-3 yrs ago now from "Vintage Hockey Cards & Collectables". I haven't been there/purchased anything in months from anyone, but when I did, it was a pretty tight run ship.

Good luck. :)

I buy from that group as well - it seems quite drama free compared to a lot of the other ones.

Thanks. Yours is good looking as well.

That's what I found with that site/group too. It seems to be a tight run ship. I've likely purchased a dozen or so from members there without any hitches at all.

Here's one of mine checking out our favorite card. :)

Been wanting a ‘52 Gordie for a while as my earliest Howe card. Wanted to keep it low grade and not too spendy and finally found this guy without any creasing or wrinkles like I was seeing in just about everything else in my desired price range. Was really happy with the surface and image on this one.

Here's my boy, Walter White (and Black):

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20knocks.jpeg

Don't let the cute fool you; he's racked up over a dozen rat kills that I know of, plus a baby raccoon. He's a big, heavy pounce hunter; should have named him "Thud" because when he hits the floor it is with a thud. He's so strong that when he head-butts me he can knock me off balance if I am not paying attention. It gets pretty annoying when I am asleep in my recliner.

But I digress...

That is a really nice Parkie Howe. I always admire a nice #9. I may have to look for one of those.

Thanks, Anthony. :)

I'm not sure I'd follow my lead though as I think I'm wrong more than I'm right when it comes to picking winners?

I like the 2 guys above as they have both done exceptionally well, especially Wyatt Johnston, but as we all know, 1 season does not dictate a players true value/stardom.
The other 2 guys I loaded up on in Philip Tomasino and Ty Dellandrea are, unfortunately, not working out so well for me. Phil just sat 3 games in a row and Ty 2. Phil made it back for his last game the other night but only received 7 minutes of ice time and got no points. Ty made it back too but a similar story follows him.

I chose those guys based on my heart and not my head and I'm paying the price for that. Thankfully most cards were on the cheap (biggest reason for getting in early) but all toll, it is still a chunk of change as I loaded up pretty good on both of them. Both are young yet but, unfortunately, unless things change drastically, I think they will be sent down then possibly be out/put on waivers as both have been given significant time/chances now to prove themselves, imo.

Like you and your sharp looking cards above, sometimes I just can't help myself either. :)

CardPadre 10-30-2023 11:48 AM

I’ll call this an Olympics card for thread purposes. Newest addition to my Sport Kings collection, now at 7 cards total.

I usually try to avoid paper loss affecting the text narrative on back, but this card can get spendy if it’s too nice. So I compromised slightly on the back since the front displays really well and the price was pretty good.

Several years ago I wanted a Maserati so badly. I went to the LA Auto Show and got to sit in one...and I didn't fit. Can't sit in the damn thing over about 6' and I'm 6'4". Not that I had $150K to spend anyway. So i got the cards instead.

Hat Tricks Jerseys

Been focused on collecting hockey with my daughter for the last two years and now my son is getting into it as well...

We have a local independent FPHL team here called the Danbury Hat tricks. Really good entertainment, with that old school hockey flare. Both of my kids have an affinity for the Teams enforcer Daniel "Diamond Hands" Amesbury, who has really built a cult following her in ct, and captured some serious attention for his battles on and off the ice...

Real happy to add a couple of Danimal's 2021-22 game used jerseys to the collection. My kids wear them to every game he attends!

My Favorite pickup of 2023 is this 1902 Stanley cup "challange cup program" I had never seen a program from the challange era. And I have been collecting for a bit. I have a 1926 and earliest I had seen previously was a 1920. Now I have gone down this same road before. Collecting items so scarce that no one collects them. Definitely not a money maker but cannot help it it is just how I roll. If you never read up on early Stanley cup Challanges read up on 1902. Manitoba vs Toronto with Manitoba winning 2 games to nil. Manitoba would lose the cup in March of 1902 to Montreal.

Nice pick ups, Winston. :)

That Esposito RC looks to be in great shape as does the Bossy RC, which is extremely tough to find in great shape centered like your copy appears to be.

Your Dryden RC and The Stanley Cup right beside it also look in great shape as do many of your other cards as well.

Hey Jonathan, all I can say looking at your early Stanley Cup program is..... WOW! May I ask where you acquired it???

I'm from Winnipeg, and I collected antique hockey items for a couple decades (I sold my collection at Classic Auctions a few months back - you could see my collection by going to their website, select past auctions, and search with "Brent Sobie"). I should also clarify that the 1902 challenge featured the Winnipeg Victorias, and with the program for games in Winnipeg, this item is my all-time holy grail. I handled a copy of this exact program many years ago that is housed in the Mantitoba archives. I was told it was donated by a Winnipeg family in the early-1960s.

Again, congrats on the purchase, and IF YOU EVER WANT TO SELL..... PLEASE OFFER IT TO ME FIRST. lol Thanks!
