Good stuff, Shawn. Thanks for sharing.

One of my OBC trading buddies sent me two needed 1972 Topps Hi numbers today:) To complete my Topps set run 1951-1981, I need just 22 cards. But sixteen of them are 1972 Topps Hi numbers!
Well now I just need 20 cards to complete my Topps run, fourteen 1972 Topps Hi numbers:o Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...ton/Scan_4.jpg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...Scan%201_1.jpg |
Thanks!
And good luck on your last needed Larry..I need a lot of cards for '72 :-P |
Great job, Shawn and Larry. You all are making great progress on great sets!
Picked these up in the most recent RMY Auction. Some football players who also played baseball: Greasy Neale - Pro Football HOFer https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...2520Neale.jpeg Ernie Vick - College Football HOFer https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r...52520Vick.jpeg Chuck Dressen - QB for the Decator Staleys in 1920 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u...2520Chuck.jpeg 1912 Carlisle Team Photo with Thorpe holding ball (1930s restrike) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...ke%252529.jpeg Classic 1935 Nagurski Photo! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...0Portrait.jpeg 1937 Alex Wojciechowicz - Pro Football HOFer https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2...52520Wojo.jpeg Packers star Cecil Isabell https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...20Isabell.jpeg George Blanda at the University of Kentucky https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Q...520Blanda.jpeg jeff |
Those are some great photos
|
Jeff, great pick ups! Did you go after any of the Grange items particularly the one with him, Friedman, and Molenda?

Thanks again for showing these - with so few cards for 20s and 30s NFL, the photography is really nice to see. RMY wasn't on my radar at all.
|
Jeff the photos are great but I'm baffled by the prices on these - well, not those but the prices in the photo market - they're all over the place - they seemed to be dropping with the release of so many press photos from newspaper archives, but now I think they are on the up-swing, especially for the marquee players. I'm having a hard time adjusting when there are still photos like these for $20 and $10

Picked this up at a show. Another item for the pre war collection.

I usually bow out of the expensive ones and wait for another to show up. Several times I've been able to snag one at a fraction of what it went for in an earlier auction. Very volatile market on these. jeff |
Quote:
Seriously, RMY is definitely an auction you need to check out if you're looking for vintage photos. BUT get up to speed on how to date photos as there are lots and lots of photos of photos, new photos taken from original negatives, etc. that aren't anywhere nears a valuable as the originals but are hard to distinguish. It's easy to get burned buying photos if you don't know what you're doing ... or even if you do! jeff |
Quote:
From what I understand, many of these sports photos are coming from old school newspaper archives. The originals are scanned for the newspapers storage and possible use, and the originals are sold. I even heard of companies that offered to scan all the newspaper archives just to get ahold of these original photos? Larry |
Quote:
Larry, great question! Jeff, I recall an article once about Type I, Type II, etc. that gets into what Larry is asking - we should have a thread sometime so we can discuss more.... |
There is a lot of good information on this site http://www.cycleback.com/photoguide/

1938 Dixie Lid Sammy Baugh
My latest Baugh pickup. Now if I can only find a "Bread for Health" Baugh then I will be complete :)

Nice Baugh lid!

I finished off my 1954 Bowman set with an eBay purchase, this beautiful George Blanda RC!
I also finished off my 1953 Bowman set and am awaiting the cards. I'll post when they get here:) Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...ton/Scan_5.jpg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...Scan%201_5.jpg |

Besides the Baugh Bread for Health, the Safe-T-Card Baugh's (there are two) are tough as well. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...40418_0004.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L...Ic42/sammy.JPG jeff |
I forgot to mention Jeff that these were only population numbers of graded cards. Obviously there are plenty more out there ungraded, but I would have no idea of that number would be. I did see the Baugh Safe-T-Cards on eBay, and they are pricey, but yet a bit unappealing for the cost. I'm sure the Bread for Health issue would be equally expensive, but least the Dixie Lid was decently affordable considering it's characteristics.

These two cards arrived today via eBay completing my 1953 Bowman football set:D
Lynn Chandnois All American at Michigan and a US Navy Vet played seven years for the Steelers. This SP card " books" for $75 in NM condition. Frank Gifford of course passed away this past August. All American at USC. During a 1960 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he was knocked out by Chuck Bednarik on a passing play, suffering a severe head injury. He was out of action for 18 months. After his death, an autopsy on his brain revealed that he lived with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a disease closely related to repeated head trauma. This SP cards "books" for $250 in NM condition. Wow Photo-Bucket was working tonight so I could reduce the size of the scans! Max McGee - what a legend!

Three hits 1952 Bowman Large arrived today via eBay purchase. #1 Norm Van Brocklin is the most "expensive" NM book $375. I like the white football on the Van Brocklin card, and I learned right here these were used in night games 1929-1956.

Still "chipping" away at my early Bowman sets. Incoming today a 1952 Bowman Large SP #90 Thomas Johnson books for $225 in NM condition. All American University of Michigan 1951 and only the second African American to play for the Packers. Thomas was in the NFL only one year 1952.

My Net54 Secret Santa was very good to me. Very, very good to me. Two great additions to my humble Chicle collection. Again, can't thank my giver enough.

Finally knocked another card off my 1962 Topps list #90 Fran Tarkenton RC in "collector grade" LOL. Two cards left to complete my set:
Ernie Davis RC Mike Ditka RC Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...ton/Scan_9.jpg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...Scan201_10.jpg |

Congrats on the Tarkenton pickup, Larry. This is the kind of cards I love to find. They were enjoyed by some kid 50+ years ago just as they should have been. Adds character to the cards IMO. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Another hit to my 1952 Bowman Small set described as a Poor condition filler (my kind of card)! I picked it up on eBay along with the Tarkenton RC, but Y.A. went for a little "bath" LOL! Tossed Y.A. in the kitchen sink, wiped him off with a dish rag, then dried him out between paper towels (your typical soak). Before pic on the left, after pic on the right with no improvement on the reverse. I paid 5.8% NM value for this card. I didn't notice the card was trimmed or just suffered from some weird factory cut until after Y.A. got cleaned up. Also the crease in the upper left is not noticed until after all the dirt was washed off. I thought the stain on the pennant was gum or wax but it wouldn't rub off and ended up being more dirt.
Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...on/Scan_10.jpghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...on/Scan_11.jpg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...Scan201_13.jpg |
Never washed a card before. That did clean up pretty well.

I haven't been on the boards too much in the past few weeks. It was nice to get back to looking through threads and see all these pickups from everyone that I hadn't seen before.
I picked this card up a month ago at one of our local shows from Matt. I posted about it on my blog, but apparently forgot to show it in here. The Large version of this is the #3 card on my "want" list. I didn't have this one either and was so excited to get it. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1660/...605639ca_z.jpgimg830 (3) by kekinsley, on Flickr I also picked up the Kinnick for my All-American set. I posted it in that thread. Matt told me that he'd had it since he was young, but had picked up an upgrade. I really like knowing a little history about the particular card. It was actually mentioned a few posts ago about how some kid in the 50s probably had the card. I've thought quite often lately that it would be really cool if the cards could talk. Where have they been? How did they get into the shape that they are in? I did pick up three other commons from Matt, nothing really worth posting, though. Just cards for my WVU collection. If you're interested, you can read the post here. Thanks, Matt! All of these cards moved onto another good home. |

Thanks good sir!
I received this card recently. thought i'd share it.. my first high number card for my '72 set donated by an awesome net54'er(sp?).. only 87? more to go. I've been lurking on the main forum page reading about the secret santa deal they do every year.. sounds like fun. Have you guys gotten involved in that? |
1955 Topps All-American Sammy Baugh

got a second chance offer on this 1934 Nagurski photo and wrestled it into my collection - https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W...52520promo.jpg |

I tried getting the 51 Graham along with this Motley but got sniped. But I'm keeping my eye out as the ones on the bay are overpriced...

Awesome Motley!
Shawn, Great centering with that '58 Jimmy Brown, and a mighty fine '72 high number ;) Best of luck sir. |
My dad and I drove down to FL for a wedding yesterday and were talking football and he brought up Motley and how great he was.
Nice pick up! |
Really like the mascots on the 51's.
Ty let us know when the book comes out! |
The ebook comes out this Monday, January 18 (MLK Day). "Darkhorse: The Jimmy Claxton Story" will be available on the Amazon Kindle site for $4.99. There will be an announcement and direct link on net54's main forum page at that time. Perfect bound copies will be available February 29. Thank you for the support, and happy collecting!

I picked this up today at my LCS. I did think it was a 1948 and not a 1949, though. I definitely learned a vintage lesson today. I may have slightly overpaid, but it is what it is. Still happy with the pickup.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1606/...d64bba4d_z.jpg1949 Leaf #134 Chuck Bednarik by kekinsley, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1482/...fc9f7790_z.jpg1949 Leaf #134 Chuck Bednarik (back) by kekinsley, on Flickr |
Still a very nice card! The 1949 cards can definitely fool you if you're not careful. When I was putting together the 48 and 49 Leaf sets I found out several times that I had 48s in my 49 binder and vice versa. Usually when I picked up lots on ebay and didn't look closely at the cards.
Besides looking at the copyright on the back, if the card stock is white you know its a 48. Otherwise it could be a 48 or 49 as Leaf appears to have finished up their 48 run with gray card stock and then carried that stock into their 49 set. All the cards in the 49 set have gray stock. jeff |
I agree with Jeff. Still a great card. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner yesterday. I was tromping through the woods.
|
No mail yesterday MLK day. But my mailbox was STUFFED today as I continue to work on my early Bowman sets:)
I added the three 1950 Bowman cards the most "expensive" is Charley Trippi NM "value" $70 only eight more to go! Four of the five '48 Bowmans are short prints (divisible by 3) NM "value" $100 each. #84 Crisler was in an SGC "A" holder Buy It Now was $12 OBO. Seller took my $8 offer shipped it free. I couldn't tell exactly what was wrong with the card until I cracked it out, and obviously it's trimmed. Still glad to get this card and need just six more to complete my set! Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%202_2.jpeg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%203_4.jpeg |
Larry - You are a throwback, and I love it! Good to see someone that is passionate about well loved cards. They don't have to be gem mint to be beautiful! And those early Bowmans are nothing but beautiful!
Sam |
Definitely worth the 20 bucks I paid. :D

I was really excited to find this on eBay for less that $2 shipped once I "found out" about it. The only vintage CFL card that I know of picturing a former Mountaineer.
A Canadian Addition to my WVU Collection https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1627/...0b9bfcf4_z.jpgimg969 by kekinsley, on Flickr |
What a great old CFL card!

Already posted these first 2 when I bought them raw. Just got them back from PSA. Was hoping for 8's or 9's, but these grades still aren't too bad. Bryant is pop 1, with 4 higher. Hannah is pop 1, 3 higher.
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...r%20Bryant.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...2%20Hannah.jpg Some day I might start a John Hannah thread on here. I'm a big fan of Exhibits cards and just picked up my first football one. A HOFer, no less. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Bulldog.jpg |
cool Bama cards! and exhibit.. I've looked at grabbing exhibits but dont have enough knowledge about 'em.
|
Just a few posts ago, I shared a raw copy of this card. I also picked this one up. I'm not sure whether or no to be surprised that a PSA 8 is the highest grade available.
A(nother) Canadian Addition to my WVU Collection https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1554/...54f665eb_z.jpgimg970 by kekinsley, on Flickr |
Maybe a PSA 8 Canadian is a 9 American with the exchange rate
I'd always heard this card was hard to find nice because it was the last card in the set and subject to greater wear and tear for those orderly people who kept their cards stacked in order secured with rubber bands. And this is his earliest card. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/V~sAAO...mS/s-l1600.jpg |
Very nice Fats Henry. During the Black Friday sales on COMC, I was able to pick up one in decent shape for a good price for my set.
Another pickup, this time from the "VIntage Football Cards" group on Facebook.
