The signature is what made it irresistible. I have a stellar Sullivan cabinet already--there are a variety to choose from--but signed? Fugedaboutit.

I can't believe I won this tonight. This moves into the top 10 cards I own and it was 2 hundos and the vig and shipping. I looked through the Leland's catalog over and over. About 2 hours before the close I saw this in "internet only" section. I can't believe it. So geeked...
|
Great card! Red Cross T219s are unbelievably tough to find so getting one of the keys is a heck of a pick-up for a collection.
The boxing stuff closed fast in Lelands last night; being in SoCal I was done with my bidding before I finished dinner. Several of my bids held and I ended up with over 2000 cards. Gonna be a hell of a sorting party! |
Quote:
Congratulations Adam. I was going to bid on a bunch of stuff, then I sat down to watch "The Magnificent Mrs. Maisel" with the wife, and before I knew it, I looked down at my phone, it was past 10pm and I went "Doh!" :) |
Thank you Amazon!
I picked up three of the four large lots at the opening. Had one other bidder on the 4th lot--must've seen the 1915 Susini Tris Speaker in there. I basically paid a buck a card overall, which is hard to go wrong on; I will give it my best shot, though, and see if I can't lose money anyway :D. |
Definitely some decent buys looking back over at the closed lots.
|
It is going to be so much fun seeing what type cards I have and what I don't, seeing what slabs I can replace with raw cards, etc.
I did get one cabinet lot and from the start of the auction to the end two of the subjects were elected to the IBHOF (Erne and Ryan), which is nice. |

This one takes me to 44/50 on the tough Miners Extra set, though this rare pink print variation pales to the gorgeous Red Cross Attell above
|
T219 ME and RC are both difficult, the latter rare. I admire your perseverance; I didn't have the patience to do the sets so I just kept a type card.

I sold off a number of T219 HLC and ME a number of years ago. I have this Attell on my pc from 2012 and think it's still in a box somewhere... I guess I need the HLC now and the T218 tolstoi....GL on the T219 ME's
|
Thank you guys! Having a blast with the T218-T220 master run, though the Red Crosses aren't happening. A Honest Long Cut Black, HLC Green, and Miners complete sets will be enough for me. I dabble in adding type cards sometimes for some variety (your book, Adam, has been a wonderful resource on that front), but the American Tobacco lithographic issues are my aesthetic favorites.
RCMcKenzie - Attell thankfully doesn't have a T218 Tolstoi back available, just the Hassan 30, Hassan 649, Mecca 30, Mecca 649 no series notation backs as a series 1 card. Those Tolstoi's are darn tough, I'm sitting on just 20/50 after 15 years collecting the master set. |
Quote:
I didn't realize T218 Tolstoi is only available w/ 50 backs. That almost seems possible to complete. I need to see what I have. I know I have more than 10 Tolstoi backs. I need to make a checklist. Rob |
Quote:
Here's the checklist of the cards possible with a Tolstoi back. All 50 cards released with series 2, minus the Jack Johnson (Green background, horizontal), a rule breaking card that was added late in series 1 production and released for only part of the print run for both series 1 and 2. I've never seen a Tolstoi back of this card, and no one seems to report owning one, though there is still a slight chance it exists. There are some tough specific front/back combos on other cards, but the 50 Tolstoi's and 5 or 6 spelling error variations in series 1 are the main hurdles on the master set. I'm down to under a hundred cards left, but at this pace I'll need another 25 years or so to finish the Tolstoi's. Patsy Brannigan Knock-Out Brown Walter Bursch Young Corbett Leach Cross C.M. Daniels (Crouching) Young Donahoe W.C. Fielding John Flanagan (Horizontal) Joe Gans Geo. Gardiner H.E. Gissing Abe Goodman Jack Goodman Charley Griffin J.L. Thanks very much for the Tolstoi checklist. It sure helps to know what to look for. I'm at 14/50 Tolstoi with these 2 dupes. I have a lot of T218 in boxes to see if I have any more. They are not unsearched boxes, I just get unorganized and misplace cards.

It took a while to get here but worth the wait; a pretty nice CDV for 135 or so years old. |
I've started listing new boxing cards on my eBay store: first 15 lots are live. Anyone who wants something from the BIN listings LMK: 10% off if you buy directly from me through N54. If you want one of the auction items, LMK and we can see if we can work out a sale price.

Thanks, Adam, the Slavin cab goes well with his n174 pink-tint faded card...

I think Wood did the photos for both issues.

Here is another with that Slavin image. It is the only boxing N173 I have ever seen, but you guys know boxing a lot better than I do. Has anyone seen another one?
|
Nope, that's the only subject I know of, but I think there is a Dog's Head mount known. I have to dig into my images file Monday and see if I can find it.
|
n173
Nice card, Jay. I don't remember seeing an n173 boxer before. REA or another auction house had a non-sport n173 cabinet recently. It was some obscure foreign politician. I guess customers could ask for an n173 with any image they wanted, as long as Goodwin & Co had it.
|
Thanks Adam, Dogs Head cabinet or small card with Dogs Head ad on the back? I think I have seen the latter.
Rob-The politician in REA was an Australian issue. I believe the Slavin is also Australian. For years I have tried to find an Australian checklist similar to the lists that have been found for baseball players in the U.S. However, I have thus far been unsuccessful. |
n174 Australian
3 Attachment(s)
Here are some larger scans of the n174 Slavin. It seems to have a very faint "OLD JUDGE" font on the caption portion of the card. I added a link from Bill C's site which shows everyone the Australian font. I know there are a few different fonts that JoeG was describing in a thread the other day. It's good to know that other Australian n174's could be found with the n173 format...The Slavin is in an SGC 20 holder. It is about as faded as a card can get to me...Rob
www.thetraderspeaks.com/n174-old-judge/ |
Rob-As you probably know, there are many boxers that appeared in Old Judge sets that are not shown on that site. I only have short number and “0” number boxers amongst the small cards, but quite a few, like Ike Weir, are not shown.
|

Jay, I was trying to show an un-faded Australian type font like he has on there. I may have some in my collection, but he already had some scanned on there...Here is the non-sport Australian card he has(Spurgeon)...
Some of the boxers with the "hot dog" logo almost look like they belong in n172...Here are a few boxer types that I have... |
Burdick did not do a good job cataloging Goodwin & Co cards. For starters, there is no one Old Judge set, just like there is no one Topps set. There were many sets issued over a number of years, in the case of Old Judges over the period from 1886-90. Many of the earlier Old Judge sets were not solely baseball sets, but multiple topic sets which included boxers, other athletes, actors and actresses, politicians, etc. The script cards were a multiple subject set, as were the low number cards and the “0” number cards. In the Old Judge book we catalog the later two sets in the Appendix section. Unfortunately, there are still some holes in our cataloging of these sets, although far less now than when we did the book almost twelve years ago.
The cards with the floating sausage Old Judge logo are from the script series. They do belong with the script baseball players. They are not a separate set. |

I was thinking these author cards were Australian, but I noticed the captions were very similar to this Mutrie. The Mutrie has an additional copyright line by Goodwin, 1888. I notice that the Mutrie I have has a little different caption format than the 336-1 in y'all's guide.
The set is easier to tackle when you break it down into different series and categories or teams and players, than trying to see it as one gigantic set of historical figures. I'm still learning, but I also forget about as fast as I learn. Rob |
I think the author cards are either from here or British (yes, there are British ones too). As I remember, the British cards have fonts similar to ours. They are neat though.
To further complicate matters, some 1890 Players’ League cards have a different font than on 1889 cards. The letters appear slightly thinner. |
I checked my image file and I misremembered--Slavin has a regular OJ mount, no Dog's Head.

Not rare or expensive (this copy was $29.16 net), but one of my favorite old boxing cards, as it features the Burns-Johnson fight in 1906. Burns remains one of my favorite old timers and, I think, an underrated boxer. He weighed in at 168 pounds for his fight against Johnson. Burns was only 5'7, but defended his title successfully 11 times in less than 3 years, one of the most active champions of all time. Johnson was about 6'1, weighed in at 192 for this fight (and was usually heavier during his title reign). Johnson won of course, taking the crown after the police stopped the fight in the 14th round, claiming a points victory by referee decision. Burns "was beaten, but he was game" as Johnson said. Burns was the first to defend his title around the world.
Need 6 cards to complete the black back E79 set now, and 12 of the tough red back cards. |

Thanks, G, like my paternal grandmother told me, "no good deed goes unpunished." When you explained to me that T218 Tolstoi had 50 cards, and provided a checklist, I went all-in, thinking I'm going to complete it. I promise not to hoard, and trade all my dupes..Rob 18/50

Greg, yes, I got that one yesterday, here's a link to an old thread from 2003 that I started, naively talking about T218 Tolstoi. It does seem that some of the track guys are easier to find, maybe just a coincidence. Hopefully, higher prices will bring out more cards to the market and we can all complete our sets. Rob

I think each series was probably printed on more than 1 sheet layout, and that thus it's possible there are 2 levels of scarcity in the Tolstoi's. Jeffries, Gans and Langford seem 'common' among the boxers. For the record and anyone else keeping track, here's what I have: Leach Cross, W.C. Fielding, John Flanagan, Joe Gans, George Gardiner, Gissing, Harry Haywood, James Jeffries, Harry Jensen, Jack Johnson, W.J. Kramer, Smyth Northridge, Tommy O'Keefe, George Obermeyer, William Papke, Frank Riley, J.A. Ruddy, Harry Sedley Jr., Melvin Sheppard, C.C. Steinert |

Hello all,
I don’t really post much but I’ve been selling some cards and meeting so many great people that I figured I should at least pop on, say thanks, and post some cards. I’m a low grade pre-WWI boxing set builder. I’m also a Jack Johnson and Joe Jeannette “active career” collector. I started collecting Johnson cards about nine or so years ago. They were relatively cheap then and I managed to pick up the common ones and many of the harder ones. Things stalled about a year ago as prices went up. I resorted to making desperate posts in the BST looking for a low grade e77, Susini, etc. ... Then one evening (PST), Scooter729 posts a horrible condition e77 Johnson on eBay. Scott had once sold me one of my favorite cards in my collection, a N162 Sullivan. So, I proceed to absolutely blow up his inbox. He’s was really kind about it all. The rest is history. Thanks Scott! The e77 is pretty rare but not one of my favorites. Why does it look like Jack is in the process of balding?? The Johnson fits in well with a stack of terrible condition e77s that I just bought from Rhy. As a low-grade set builder, it amazing to find nine cards from the e77s in a week! https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5h_EOszV-...AEC4F72B7.jpeg Finally, I made a trade with RC. Thanks so much! Even in bad shape it’s a gorgeous card. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LMWJPXoEb...21BEDD10B.jpeg So thanks everyone! Thanks for helping me get further in a Johnson collection than I ever thought that I would. Also, thanks for purchasing some cards so I can feed the habit! It’s very much appreciated! Be well! Nice Johnson's David! And thanks for some of the cards here.
Recent pickups the last couple weeks or so; sometimes the back is better than the front. Choynski is rough, but knocks me up to 47/50 on the Tolstoi's. |
Nice cache of cards. I added a few premiums from the British periodical Boxing, ranging from 1909-1914. All three show Fred Welsh; the last one includes Willie Ritchie.

Not sure how desirable or scarce this is, but I took a risk at a best offer and happy with the outcome. Just ordered Adam's book so I can educate myself better. Lifelong prewar baseball collector(35 years) but my passion is in contact sports so why not collect them. I have wrestled, practiced many different types of grappling and mixed martial arts in the Marines into my late 30's. I only played baseball to my sophomore year in high school :) Going to sell my bb cards and have fun on this side for awhile.

Some from the last week or two, sadly these 3 were imprisoned but quickly liberated. The Choysnki silver doesn't belong in a SGC 3 holder anyways, as the card is significantly short and probably trimmed.
Starting to get into the British issues more as well (thank you davidl, for making me jump across the pond for my boxing fix now!). The Silvers keep stacking up. |
Wait till you catch the bug for the rest of the world's cards. You'll find yourself waiting breathlessly for deliveries from places like Venezuela, Singapore and Ukraine, and chasing obscure cards of Argentinean club fighters that even the boxer's mom doesn't care about.
