Time to pump some life into this great vintage thread!

I'm very excited to have been able to add this fully dated ticket stub to a Smoky Joe Wood 1-hit shutout against the NY Highlanders in his historic 34 win season in 1912.
Smoky Joe led all of baseball in 1912 with 10 shutouts in addition to the 34 wins. In 1913 he started experiencing arm trouble and was never able to return to form. Amazingly, he reinvented himself as a position player later with the Cleveland Indians and retired with a .283 batting average (.366 in 1920!). Certainly this is a testament to his great athleticism.
Wood got his 16th win in the second game of a doubleheader on June 29, 1912.

It's important to note that 1912 also marked the 1st year of historic Fenway Park.

Early vintage baseball tickets with complete dates were scarce prior to the 1930's and very scarce prior to 1920.
In fact, most were not dated with the exception of the very spendy best seats in the house.

Many thanks to net54's David Shakir for making this ticket available.
I've been looking for years to find a nice ticket to Smoky Joe's 1912 Tour de Force season & now I can check that one off my collecting bucket list. ;):)
BTW, the stunning photo of Smoky Joe below I do not own, but I love the image and saved it. I seem to recall that Bob Freeman may have posted this a number of years ago. The photo of Joe and Bill Carrigan with their wives I do own & came directly out of Bill Carrigan's estate. Thanks to net54's Rawn for selling this to me a few years ago. I love this image as well & I believe it originates from the 1916 season.

Thanks Scott for your purchase , I was going to get it slabbed , but I know some collectors prefer them raw
Mailing today Monday

Finished my Phillies no-hitter collection a little while ago. Little chance I'll find any tickets to the team's other no-hitters (Ferguson 1885, Donahue 1898, Fraser 1903, Lush 1906) so I guess I'm done.

Not prevalent, but they are out there, here's one from the Gipper game:

Always great words to live by. ;)

In all seriousness, ticket collecting has been free of most of the fraud that's plagued other parts of the hobby for the most part. That being said, it's always a good idea to question anything that seems to be too good to be true.

If in doubt you can always ask others on this board for advice.
There is a lot of collective knowledge on net54. It blows my mind sometimes...

These are tickets to the 1912 Olympics...they include one to attend the inauguration of the stadium, 12th was when Thorpe long jumped, 13th and 14th were for first 2 days out of 3 days of the Decathlon that Thorpe won. I do have an opening day ticket also but can’t locate it right now.

I recently came across a couple of cool Mets ticket stubs that were buried somewhere in the vast accumulation of stuff that I call a "collection."

First is a stub from Opening Day 1983. This was Tom Seaver's return to the Mets after a few years with the Reds, or Redlegs as they were known for a few years in the 1950s.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7899/3...efe2db1877.jpg

The other one is May 6, 1983 v. Cincinnati. This was Darryl Strawberry's Major League debut.

That is cool, makes for a great story. Did the fan leave early to beat traffic, thinking the game would be a no hitter ? As a collectable, I think the writing makes it more interesting than a pristine unblemished ticket. It puts the ticket in someone's hand who was at the game..."game used"

Koufax 1st career win complete ticket

2 Attachment(s)
Happy to add this unique complete ticket to my Koufax collection. Certain Brooklyn Dodger games from 1954-56 were designated as Elsie games, where youngsters 16 and under could send in 5 Elsie brand ice cream lids, bags or wrappers, plus 25 cents, and receive a grandstand admission ticket to Ebbets Field.

While the 2 parts of the ticket have separated, having both the admission and rain check sides is very unusual. And of course, the topper is that this was a ticket for Sandy Koufax's first win, a complete game shut-out in which he struck out 14.

I was given this back in '51 from a person who went to that game.

Hey Mark

There might be somewhere to look up seat/grandstand prices for Forbes throughout the years, or even a mention of a specific price for a single season would help tell you if its before or after that date.
Maybe even just compare if you can find prices for any MLB venue from the era, including any datable tickets.

Mark,

REA had a similar ticket listed last year with same price and tax breakdown as circa 1926. I haven't done a ton of research on these but I hope it narrows it down.

Paul

That is extremely helpful. Thanks! I was wondering if the Set Number might indicate the year, but I'm starting to think that it doesn't. On the back, someone wrote the score. All I need to do now is to track down that game!

Mark

Mark, Here's a picture of a ticket I have. I've assumed it was from 1933-40 based on having William Benswanger's name and lack of a war tax from WW2. Unfortunately, dating doesn't seem to be as easy as figuring out the set numbers. Grandstand price here is $1.10 vs your $1.01. I've seen 1940's tickets with a $1.25 Grandstand price.

Paul, the 1926 ticket from the REA auction is so similar to mine that I think mine is probably from that year or sometime close to it. On the back of my ticket, someone wrote PGH 8 Chicago 5. There was no game with that score in 1926, but the Pirates did beat the Cubs 8-5 in the first game of a labor day double-header in 1925. Cuyler had 4 hits--and the Pirates beat long-time Bucco Wilbur Cooper. Cooper joined the Bucs in 1912 and led their staff for a dozen years until he was traded away for the 1925 season. I recall Fred Leib (I think) writing that the saddest sight he ever saw was a forlorn Wilbur Cooper on the mound when he was losing a game to Pirates in 1925 because the Bucs were clearly on the way to the Series, and Cooper knew that he would not be with them. I use Wilbur Cooper as my NET 54 avatar as a tribute to the sad Pirate. Maybe this ticket is from one of the games that broke old Wilbur's heart. In any case, I am very happy to believe that I have identified the ticket.
thanks to all of you.

Scott Garner 04-21-2019 05:44 PM

Hi Mark,

Set fonts are definitely different, and not the same with the other ticket.
This would suggest yours is an earlier ticket, FWIW.

Mark 04-21-2019 05:51 PM

thanks. I'll keep looking for an 8-5 game in the early 20's.

I also posted this in the July pickup thread, but I'm thrilled to be able to have upgraded the Jim Palmer no-hitter ticket in my advanced no-hit ticket collection.
Here is the only full ticket that I have ever seen in 45 years of collecting to Palmer's gem.

1965 Game 4 World Series Ticket-Question?

I have a ticket from game 4 of the 1965 World Series. I would like to display it with cards of the players from the game. Should I use 1965 Topps cards (the year of the world series) or 1966 Topps cards( player stats from 1965) ?

I'd go with the '65 cards.
