I am now down to one card to complete my 1952 Topps set. I bet that probably nobody would be able to guess what card it is.

It is a high number, but not one of the ones you might think.

Great accomplishment!

Also, like was already asked, what was that last card that you needed?

I assume, based on your post it wasn't Mick or Mathews?

Was it Campanella?

Edit: I change my guess to Bartirome :D

Last Card

After 38 years of looking, I finally finished my 1963 Post Cereal Baseball set. I bought a lot of 1963 cards on ebay and #196 Frank Thomas was among them.

paulcarek 09-24-2018 02:09 PM

1971 Topps: 747/752; 99% complete (need 630 Clemente, 650 Allen, 664 Checklist, 688 Anderson, 709 Baker)
1972 Topps: 678/782; 87% complete

bigred1 09-27-2018 07:28 PM

Plenty that I am working on, main one is 52 topps, need 311 Mantle, 312 Robinson, 332 Bartirome and 407 Mathews. Need some luck lol. Recently completed PSA9+ 1978, just keep watching values slide on my 9s.

crose 09-28-2018 09:14 AM

Finished off a 1963 topps set. (Last card was #173 Bombers Best) Only been needing a couple of cards for a while just kept having the second best bids on ones I liked. I’m not putting this one down yet though. Going to keep upgrading. Probably will end up with close to a second set down the road. Already have around 400 cards of it.

I'm awaiting the arrival of Sandy Koufax (an upgrade of my card with a piece missing) and a Brooks Robinson RC (both PSA 6) to put me within 2 (#284 Zimmer and #286 Richardson) of completing my 1957 set. If anyone has either of those cards in decent shape to trade, for the love of God please check out my bucket. :D

Vintagevault13 09-30-2018 03:19 PM

I just purchased the last 4 cards to finish off the 1971 Topps high #s. Not as tough as the ‘72 highs, but pretty darn close. I have a few other ‘71s so that puts me a little over 15% complete. I build sets one series at a time so now on to series 5!

Spend far less by not worrying about the tiny differences of a dinged corner or crease.
If you are not chasing NR Mint Art Mahaffey or Lou Klimchock for 10x the price of a well loved common, your budget will go much farther ;)

Same with the stars...you either have a 1954 Willie Mays or you don't....the price between fair/good and NR mint is ridiculous if you are mainly interested in filling the set:D

Nothing better than finding a well centered 1956 Clemente with amazing color... and a well placed crease at the bottom right. Great eye appeal, for a small fraction of the price.

commishbob 10-01-2018 07:35 AM

With Bob G Miller in the house I'm now just a Twins Team card from finishing my 1962 set. It's been a grind.

My 1970 Topps Basketball set is now complete. Or will be when my last (Leroy Ellis) card arrives. It was returned to sender (unknown recipient/no forwarding address!?!?) for some odd reason...the eBay seller had the correct address (I've lived here for 35 years). The seller reached out to me and is resending and refused to let me help with the postage. I'll be glad to put that one to bed.

Thanks to a trade with member pwang100 I am down to needing 4 for to finish my 1955 Bowman set. I still need #'s 242(Banks), 291, 293, and 307.

I got this Frank Malzone.:)

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e14b3a1bab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d06c9f04ab.jpg

I still need both Williams, Mays, Aaron, Kaline and Banks...though I already have Banks and Kaline in lower grade SGC examples. Probably shooting for PSA 6 for all by Aaron...I’ll probably do the best centered PSA 5 for Aaron.

Update as of January 2018: Bowman 1949 is down to needing 14. On the assorted issues have completed all except 1 1954 Red Heart (damn you Erskine!)

In the pre-war, updated counts are for 1933 Goudey need is now 29, 34 Goudey need 19, 34-36 Diamond Stars need 19, 1939 Play Ball need 8, and 1940 Play Ball need 11.

Also working on the Kelloggs run and only need 16 from the tough 1971 set and 2 from the 1972 set.

Finally, have started on the 1948-49 Leaf set - only the non-short prints - need 15 of those.

Having received #2 Tom Seaver from the 1971 set today - marking the completion of the Kellogg's run - I am checking in on my set building progress.

The Bowman run seems stuck on the final 5 cards in the 1949 set. They include the Big 3 (Robinson, Paige, Snider) but also two other toughies: Preacher Roe and Dave Ferriss.

I have been making great progress on the pre-war front (low to mid-grade):
- 1933 Goudey need 13 (including Lajoie)
- 1934 Goudey need 12
- 1934-36 Diamond Stars need 11
- 1939 Play Ball need 2 (including Williams)
- 1940 Play Ball need 3 (including DiMaggio and Shoeless Joe)
- 1941 Play Ball is complete

I have completed almost every Robert Laughlin related set out there - still seeking the "Erorrs" set and the "Sports Slang" set. PM me if you have a line on either of those.

The hunt continues!

commishbob 11-01-2018 03:58 PM

Finished off my '62 baseball and '70 basketball sets and swore I'd take a break from serious set chasing. But that didn't work out.

At the local hotel show last month I came across a nice 1961 starter lot in a binder for under 60 cents a card. Added a really cheap lot via eBay (nice condition for the price!) and find myself about 60% through with it already. A bit less than that for the higher cost star cards.

My other set builds have taken a back seat and are creeping along.

JollyElm 11-01-2018 04:10 PM

Finally finished off my 1967 Topps set with the addition of a beautiful Rocky Colavito high number. Now I will await the next ebay 15% coupon to try to knock off the last couple of 1957's I need.

jiw98 11-03-2018 07:47 PM

I just added a couple more cards to my 1955 Bowman baseball set. I need 8 more cards to finish.
I need the following to complete the set: 68,179,238,242,246,270,278,& 310.
I also have several extras for trade or sell.

drmondobueno 11-04-2018 11:51 AM

On to chasing whatever is next...

Thought I had my 62 Topps baseball set completed then went back and realized I was missing 5 cards. Just doing a vg-ex set, some better and some worse.
#320 - Aaron - Kept buying raw at good deals so I sent to PSA and they kept coming back 5's so I would sell them
#318 - Switch hitter connects. Had one raw and not sure why I sold it
#470 - Kaline A.S.
#471 - Mantle A.S. - Have a PSA 6oc that I might use
#544- I have 10 of these ranging in grades PSA 2-8. Can't seem to keep one raw.

1986 Fleer Basketball PSA 8 Set
#57 - Jordan

1986 Fleer Basketball Sticker PSA 9 Set
#1 - Jabbar

1986 Fleer Basketball Sticker PSA 6 Set
#1 - Jabbar
#3 - Dantley
#4 - English
#5 - Erving

1986 Fleer Basketball Raw Set
#7 Barkley
#57 Jordan

1961 Topps Baseball Raw
Missing 134 cards right now with a lot of them being high numbers. Trying to do the set in NM and have some that I will need to upgrade. Will have to list the numbers missing sometime to see if anyone here can help out

1962 Jell-O
Attempting to do this set all in PSA. Most will be "authentic" but have a good amount of numerical grades at this point. Sitting on the registry with about 55% graded right now with more at PSA and several sitting here waiting to be sent in. Overall I'm at about 75% complete with 40-50 cards to go.

Down to 1 card for 1966 (EXMT range) set after purchasing "Choo Choo Coleman #561" in NRMT yesterday.

Only card needed is: Detroit Tigers (team card) #583

All upgrades are complete. Once the Tigers card is added the set will be 100% finished.

Yes sir, all cards go into a binder. I have popped cases on several PSA 6s to 8s and put them in the binder. Preferably the Tigers card would be at least EX+. I have not put anything below EX in this set.

I have considered getting some of the key cards which I would consider "exceedingly" expensive and keep them in graded status such as a PSA 7 or better Nolan Ryan, Seaver, Pete Rose when it comes around.

My current Ryan in my 1968 is likely EX which knocks the value down. If the cards are under $500 in value, I am comfortable with them in the binders.

JollyElm 11-10-2018 03:18 PM

I love the binder talk. All of my 1957-75 sets are in binders, and for countless years I've been trying to upgrade them by going to shows and hitting ebay, etc., knocking off a card here and there. I absolutely love the tactile feel of the cards and the wonderfully musty, nostalgic aroma of the old cardboard comes through whenever you leaf through a binder. But it's come to the point now where virtually everything I buy is graded. The main reasons for that are two or threefold:

First, when the time comes to sell my cards, having them in slabs will be quite a leg up for establishing perceived value and whatnot.

Two, if I'm looking for something on ebay, it is virtually guaranteed that ungraded HOF'er cards will have such inflated prices that it'll be more than prudent to spend a little more and get a really nice one that's already graded. That's what happened when I was finishing off my 1961 high numbers. $70 bucks for an ungraded All Star to put in the binder, or around $100 (and less during ebay coupon days) to grab one up in PSA 8? I enthusiastically went with the latter. (The same sort of thing happened with 1967 high number, Rocky Colavito.)

Lastly, I gotta be honest, when I see really nice ungraded HOF'ers from the 60's being sold by dealers who specialize in graded cards, I often wonder, "Why didn't he get this one graded? There must be something going on. Maybe it's trimmed and/or was rejected by PSA or something??" Granted, there are plenty of other reasons why a card hasn't been graded, but it never hurts to be careful.

vintagebaseballcardguy 11-10-2018 03:52 PM

I can't argue against your points about graded cards being safer, especially when buying online. The significant cards in my sets will almost always be graded. However, the rest of the set will be ungraded and in the binder. I am actually including the graded members of the set in the binder process now. I just have to use different pages for the graded key cards. It is a reasonable compromise. If I had to sell the set, the keys are graded.

1910 Punch

This is probably a set that most have not heard of, but I have been working on it for more than a decade. 71% complete as of now.

Of the 49 card (known cards), I am missing:

Armando Cabanas
Alfredo Cabrera
Joe Casey
Claud Derrick
Chicho Conzalez
Gervasio Gonzalez
Bris Lord
Quico Magrinat
George Moriarty
George Mullin
Emilio Palomino
Eddie Plank
Carlos Roggers
Germany Schaefer

Any help in finding these would be much appreciated!

The good news is that I have most of the key cards, like Cobb, Pop Lloyd, Mendez, Bender, Bruce Petway, Eustaquio Pedroso, Luis Padron and Home Run Johnson. The only HOFer that I am missing is Plank.

commishbob 11-12-2018 09:52 AM

1961 Topps

I made a big dent in my 1961 needs at this past Saturday's local hotel show. I'm now at 492 of 586. The 94 I lack however are mostly high numbers and some stars from the lower range. It'll be a challenge to find these in decent shape at prices that won't drain my retirement funds.

But if it was easy it wouldn't be as much fun or as rewarding.

My '71, '75 and '78 sets are at or near complete but have been on the back burner waiting to be bindered while I have tackled the '61.
