This Jackie Robinson barnstorming pennant was on my “top 3 pennants wanted” list, and I was surprised to see it turn up in a 24 hour eBay auction. There must be more of them out there, but I haven’t seen one for sale before. The barnstorming tours are a fascinating story and important part of baseball and American history, dating back to Ruth and Gehrig and continuing up through the date of this pennant. Jackie headed up 3 tours, one in 1948, one in 1950, and the one this pennant was made for, 1953. Interestingly, the last one was the only one that also featured some white players on his team, including Branca and Hodges, however there was at least one game when the white players had to sit on the bench when local laws segregation laws prevented blacks and white from playing together. This is only my fourth Jackie pennant, and by my count I still have 5 to go.

Fantastic pick up, Rick!

I noticed it looks more teal blue in the listing. Your pic looks green. Which is more accurate?

thanks Rob. I also thought it was teal blue also, but it is green, front and back. 12 games to go, could be pretty exciting.

I love the green….especially with the aqua and the yellow. Your pennant is in pretty amazing condition.

Rick … that’s a great pennant and it’s in incredible condition. Those pennants fade so easily. The cloth pennants are so beautiful in their original color. Hopefully if you display you can have it protected from UV. Congrats!

Thanks Mark, I know you have some rare Jackie's on your wall. My hunt continues.

Rob, I agree, very unusual colors on this. Looks quite different than any other pennant I own, including the red version with Jackie in a circle.

Thanks Greg. I saw the condition of the 2 pennants you picked up from the same seller and was hoping this one was in as nice condition as yours appeared. The seller's photo's weren't the best so it was difficult to be certain as to the condition. I do keep all pennants in a room that has little direct light and lcd lighting, so they should be safe from fading.

The addition of those 2 Brooklyn Bum pennants must give you a pretty good collection of colorful bums. How many sets do you have of those? I don't have any yet myself, time to pick one up somewhere:).

Rick, I have ten … all different in terms of color and material. I have six colors in felt (black, blue, two different purples, green, red) and now four different colors in cloth. Also have a LA Dodgers with Emmet Kelly.

That’s good that you can protect that pennant from UV. The rarity and the condition really make it one of a kind. You got a great deal, I could see that going for 10 grand in a private auction …

I know you have stated your preference for the cloth varieties, and I have to agree, especially in the Emmet Kelly pennants. I also have the LA version, but none of the Brooklyn ones yet.

You might be right on the value of the pennant, but I am certain it wouldn't get $10k if I were the consignor:D.

This is my only Jackie pennant, do you know that there is another “2nd baseman” version? I’ve seen it just once, I forget where ..
