I believe all of these items have been posted before, but this is what I have for today... In 1992 Crown put out the All Time Baltimore Orioles Action Stand Ups in three sets. Today I’ve pictured a 1992 Crown gas pump display sign advertising Set 1, which was available now, of the All Time Action Stand Ups. Personally, the cards are a bit plain looking with the white background, but I do like the advertising sign. Day 314 (November 9, 2020 – 314)
The Orioles had a good season in 1968 finishing 91-71 for a second-place finish behind the Detroit Tigers who went on to win the World Series. Hank Bauer was the manager of the Orioles but was replaced right after the All-Star break by Earl Weaver. I remember when I was in school, we used to cover all our books (maybe we were required to, who knows). I wanted, or I thought needed, Orioles book covers even though I usually just got the paper grocery bag type covers. Occasionally I was able to talk my mom into an Oriole book cover which were like the one pictured below. Man, she was so good at covering books. 1969 Baltimore Orioles book cover Attachment 425389 I wasn’t much of a Nabisco Team Flakes cereal fan (the four-grain energy cereal), but I didn’t know at the time that the cereal boxes had cards (mini-posters) on the back of the box to cut out. The 1969 Team Flakes consisted of 24 cards in three series of eight cards. As you can see, they didn’t pay any MLB royalties, so no insignias are shown on the cards. Frank comes in two variations, narrow yellow border and wide yellow border. On November 10th and 11th of 1994 The Don Drysdale Hall of Fame gold tournament was held at the Desert Falls and Rancho La Quinta golf courses. Back in 1985, I responded to an ad in Sports Collectors Digest from a woman who was a talented artist who recently started painting baseballs and I commisioned her to paint balls of Cal, Eddie & Brooks...I thought the work she did was so good I then asked if she ever painted portraits on a bat.. She replied she hadn't but the thought had crossed her mind and if I sent her up a bat, she'd give it a try at no cost... The artist was in the mall doing portraits for families. A small 1968 Plans of action foldout booklet, with Brooks on the cover, which discusses ticket plans for the season. Attachment 425606 Here’s an interesting photo of Brooks, in an away game at Fenway Park, helping the grounds crew (do you think Brooks wants to play baseball or what?). I don’t have all the information, but I think it’s a game from June 2, 1968 where the Orioles beat the Red Sox 4-3. Attachment 425607 |

1981/82 Charlotte O's sets

I've been a minor league card collector from the beginning, when TCMA came out with sets in the 1970's.
Certainly, the holy grails of Orioles minor league sets are the 1980 Charlotte O's blue SGA set and the O's orange Police set. Both of those sets contain coveted Cal Ripken Jr cards. I'm lucky to have the complete blue set, but only 9 cards from the orange set and no Ripken. At the prices the orange Ripken command, I'll probably never finish the set, but do look for nice examples of the others. I do have the John Shelby, Drungo Hazewood and Willie Royster cards, which are three of the guys to play for the Orioles. Two of my other favorite sets also feature the Charlotte O's. While not extremely expensive, both sets are somewhat hard to find. Both sets contain a sampling of future Orioles players. The 1981 set issued by the team looks very similar to the 1980 orange Police set. I see attempts to pass these off as the 1980 cards. The main difference is that the backs are much different and don't have tips from the Police Dept like the 1980 set. 1981 Charlotte O's team issued set Attachment 425623 Attachment 425624 Attachment 425625 Attachment 425626 The 1982 set has a nice design. Coming off the 1966 season with a World Series victory you’d figure the Orioles would be in the running for the upcoming 1967 season. We had Frank Robinson coming off his Triple Crown year, surrounded by a group of young stars, and the pitching was on a high. Well, as you already know it wasn’t meant to be and the Orioles finished in 6th place 15 ½ games back of first place. There were several issues this year, but we’ll not go over them. I’ll start today with a 1967 Orioles Season Pass. Attachment 425775 At least during 1967 we could relive some great memories from the Series in the Topps set like the following card: 1967 Topps World Series Game 4 “Orioles Win 4th Straight” #154 Attachment 425776 As a plus Brooks had his floating head on a 1967 checklist card. As Darren (JollyElm) noted early, in post #20, there is a variation of the checklist. I’ll go with the names given by Darren and put them in his own words. “The first one, which I decided to call Mr. Chin, features his chin shadow coming in contact with the top of the black bounding box. This version includes a large amount of dark shadowing beneath his chin and up the side of his face. The second version, Mr. Cheeky portrays him with more of a svelte appearance as he people at Topps cropped out a good amount of his face, making him appear much thinner. I believe I posted this painting before but us old time collectors probably remember Renatta Galasso as one of the earliest mail order card dealers. She published a magazine called the "Baseball Hobby Card Report" and back in the Summer of '84 Cal Ripken was the cover subject. I’ve only seen this publication once since I’ve been collecting Brooks so I’m sure there’s not many of these remaining. I enjoy the odd-ball items that are not seen every day. This is a small pamphlet or booklet from a 1966 Knights of Columbus events, Sports Night, where Brooks attended. For some reason, I have many many more cups in my collection than I need. Whenever I'm at a game, I just have to check to see if there's a cup I don't have.
I believe these cups were distributed at 7-Eleven stores in the Baltimore area around 1992. Labeled as Baltimore Legends, I've always wondered about the group of players selected (no offense to Paul Blair) and whether more were planned. In 2011 the event program for the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation Gala had a painting of the Ripken Family by famed baseball artist Dick Perez (of Perez-Steele , HOF, etc.) on the cover. The painting was not part of any auction that evening and shortly thereafter I e-mailed Mr. Perez for details on it and he responded that the original painting was donated to the Foundation to raise money (there were no prints, giclees, etc.). The 2012 Gala comes around and lo and behold I now see the original painting among their silent auction pieces....I was a volunteer at the event and asked if I could participate in the auction and was told I could... I may be off on the year (I should be close), but I believe the first photo is Brooks receiving the 1965 Rawlings Gold Glove Award. 1965 Gold Glove Award Attachment 426130 Next Brooks is receiving the 1966 Arkansan of the Year Award presented by Bob Gerbert. Morton Tadder

I saw yesterday that the Orioles announced the passing of long time team photographer, Mort Tadder. Tadder served as the Orioles photographer for over 40 years. He is also known for his photos of US Presidents, the Beatles and just about anything related to the Baltimore area. A single post certainly can't do justice to all of Tadder's accomplishments.
I doubt anyone, even the smallest Orioles or Brooks Robinson collector, doesn't have some of Mort Tadder's work in their collection. He did B&W and color photos, team photos, head shots, action shots, front office personnel, celebrations, award presentations and just about anything that involved the Orioles. I know I must have 2500-3000 of his photos in my collection, not including the team issued postcards, which also used his photos. We've seen many of his photos in previous posts. My favorites are the individual player 8x10 headshots available directly from the Orioles until 1999. His work included HOFers to the most obscure players. I can't pick a favorite photo, but here are a few examples of different types. was very sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Tadder & sadly learned just today of the recent passing of Foster Castleman who finished a five year MLB career by playing in 98 games for the Orioles in 1958...

Some of you may remember the first set offering from Upper Deck in 1989 which included team checklist cards with player artwork on the front. The artist on all those team cards was Vernon Wells Jr., who is the father of former MLB outfielder Vernon Wells. Help identifying this player

I'm hoping someone out there can help me to identify the O's player in this photo.
I picked this photo up years ago, because I couldn't recognize him. The photo has number 100 stamped on the back, similar to the style of Jim Elder B&W postcards. However, a look through Jim Elders checklist, eliminated it being #100 on Elder's list. I believe the player played in the Orioles system in the late 50's - early 60's range. I don't believe he ever made it to the Orioles, but I could be wrong. I've asked several old time Orioles, but haven't had any luck. Boog Powell thought it was Al Bumbry.. NO The closest I came was Jackie Brandt, who said he recognized the player, but couldn't remember his name. Jackie gets a pass, since he's 86. The most common responses from people are Bobby Avilia and Chico Carrasquel, but I personally don't think it's either of them. Thoughts anyone..... In 1989 Topps along with LJN Corporation put out a set of Talking Baseball cards. Each card had a plastic disc affixed to the back of the card and played like a record on a player. I never had the SportsTalk player so I’m unsure what was said on the Brooksie card. I do know I picked up the examples shown below cheaply. 1989 Topps and LJN Corp.
