Scorecard #1 1952 Yankees at Browns signed on back by Phil Rizzuto Duane Pillette Phil Rizzuto and Dizzy Dean Scorecard #2 A's at Browns Satchel Paige comes in to start the 8th inning he pitches 7 innings of relief losing in the 14th. ( signed by Announcer on back) Scorecard #3 Final game of 1953 and Final game of the St Louis Browns who become the Orioles in 1954, signed and inscribed by Ed Mickelson who is credited with last RBI in Browns History. Program and item #4 1958 NBA All Star game program signed and inscribed by AS MVP Bob Pettite. |

Dan Brothers began his Hall of Fame Career in 1879. The earliest scorecard I have with him playing is 1881 when he played with Buffalo. So when I looked at this 1904 NY Giants scorecard in the last REA auction and saw Brothers penciled in I thought it could not be Dan Brothers. I looked it up and Dan Brothers retired from Baseball in 1896. ...But! He came back to pick up a pinch hit at bat during the Tuesday October 4th game for the 1904 NY Giants as they played the St. Louis Cardinals. This was a scorecard from that game! Iron Man McGinnity took the loss finishing the season 35-8. The giants committed 6 errors in the field leading to a 7-3 loss.
And I now own a scorecard from Dan Brothers final at bat. |

If I was the consigner I would be upset. Not that it would have added a significant amount to final price but you never know. All it takes is 2 people who want the same scorecard...

I wasn't going to post about this but, after reading that I have to. Last week on ebay I bought a Koufax no hitter scored program with a newspaper for $43 shipped. This morning, I set my alarm way earlier than I like to buy a nothing spectacular about it 1964 Koufax scored program. Bidding was at $20.50 with 4 bidders having made 8 bids including my place setter. I have 286 Koufax scored games, this was a new one for me. I always bid last second with a number that is more than I want to pay. At the 20 second mark I typed 157 into the bid box, realized that I would be annoyed to lose it for $160 so changed my number to 304 with 10 seconds left. Way too much, that's a stupid number for a random game, if somebody bids 300 I'll be pissed off, 4 seconds to go I hit bid. Lost it by a full bid increment of $309. Third highest bid was $20. All it takes is 2 people who want the same scorecard... |
Doug good news the program has been resisted and is now at 1 red cent. Good luck I am sure it will cost much less. If I were you I would reach out to seller..

The entire situation screams "shill bidder" to me.
If you remove the "winning" bid from the equation in today's auction. I won it for $20.50 But that was a stupid amount to shill... I sent this to the seller : "I'm confused as to what happened with this auction, and curious as to why it has been relisted so quickly. Obviously I have an interest, but now I am concerned about shill bidding. Had the "winning" bid not been placed, I would have won that program for $20.50 + tax and shipping this morning. If you cancel the current auction and relist as a $50 buy it now, with free shipping I will buy it. That seems quite fair. Doug" |

Nice scorecard! Western league scorecards are scarce. Do you have any Milwaukee scorecards from 1901? Again very scarce with high demand as 1st year AL. I have only seen a couple in last 30 years.

I won the program in the second auction, and I received it today. I would have won it for about $32 all in the first time, this time I won it for $38 all in, after offering the seller $50 shipped for it, so I'm happy with my purchase. It puts me at having scored programs for just over 70% of the games that Koufax appeared in during the regular season (397) + post season (8) + all star games (4 games actually played in) = 409 total. I'm now at 288, so "only" 121 to go... all regular season (38 home games, 83 on the road) If anybody has any game that Koufax appeared in, I might be interested in buying, and I have lots of duplicates to trade. |

I thought this was an interesting scorecard since it's from Opening Day 1946. With hundreds of players/servicemen returning to the diamonds after the conclusion of World War II, I can only imagine the thunderous ovations that must have taken place during these first opening days after the war. This particular scorecard features the hometown Cardinals hosting the Pirates and is notable for the major league debuts of HOFer Ralph Kiner (single in his first at bat) and Cardinal first baseman Dick (son of George) Sisler, who bashed a two-run double in his first AB but was promptly picked off second. Can't help but think about all those prime years lost to the war. Enos Slaughter, for example, was MVP runner-up in 1942, then lost three years to military service, only to return and lead the league in RBI's, not to mention the Mad Dash that won the World Series. So many others with lost years too. Heroes - one and all.

Picked up 3 Basketball programs. All of them were from the collection of Artis Gilmore. With the 1970 NCAA final 4 program being the nicest.

I picked up these two last December. I came across the 1947 scorecard first, signed by Mel Parnell, Tex Aulds, and Jake Jones. I figured it was worth checking to see if Aulds or Jones were difficult signatures. The Wikipedia page for Jones was subtitled "World War II flying ace". He was credited with 7.5 kills in the Pacific, and had recieved the Silver Star.
The following day, I picked up the 1946 scorecard, signed by Bert Shepard. Shepard was a P-38 pilot who was shot down over Germany. He survived the crash but lost a leg, which enabled him to be exchanged for a similarly-injured German POW. I don’t specifically try to collect scorecards unless the cover has a star player and/or is just really cool like this 1906 Giants scorecard from a game with Brooklyn and showcases the 1905 World Series champion Giants in a horse drawn carriage!

Great scorecard Cody!! Thanks for Sharing. The Scorecards from the NY Giants just after the Turn of the century all display well. Pictured are 2 from 1904 as you can see the player photos on the front rotated. The 1905 is from Opening day with Iron Man McGinnity on the mound. My 1906 is from 8/4/1906 Matty pitched and won vs the Cubs. And finally 1897 Giants. I love the cover ( despite a couple of stains) and the game was Giants vs the Spiders with Cy Young on the mound. ( he took the loss).

Found in an old filing cabinet a few years ago by my father, and given to me. His program from Reds vs Mets July 25, 1978 when Pete Rose hits safely in his 38th continuous game breaking the NL hitting streak record of 37 in a row by Tommy Holmes. Scored by my dad, even circling the hit Rose had in the 3rd to break the record.

Program Ethics Question
Question for the Forum - Can one state a significant event is attached to a program if it was not made for a specific game and time, but rather a series?
Example - In the 1970s and 80s, clubs put out programs for series against specific team(s). Let's say a significant event happened in that series such as a 500th Home Run or MLB Debut happened. Since the program was not for that particular game, but rather a 3 game series, is it ethical to state it's attached to the milestone game? Thinking of programs that have their internal scorecards blank rather then filled out at the time of the specific game. Not sure what the industry norm is, so would like to know your feedback. |

Having collected scorecards for a bit. Unscored programs that "COULD BE" from a milestone game are treated very differently by the marketplace. Scored programs sell for a significant premium over Unscored..."Could be" versions. That said if a program itself is scarce and on alot of wantlists once and awhile a couple of collectors fighting it out in an auction happens.

Here's a scorecard from Game #49 of Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak, where he was already in some rarefied air. The game only went 5 innings but luckily Joe D. got his hit in the first inning (he only saw 1 other at bat). |

What is so significant about a 1938 St. Louis Browns scorecard? Since I discovered Howard "Lefty" Mills, a lefthanded pitcher with a 15-30 record who appeared in 96 games from 1934-1940, I have been on a quest to acquire any scorecards from games in which he pitched.
The piece that I just landed is an absolute treasure and comes from his best season in the big leagues. On this July 31 game against the Red Sox, Mills faced future HoF enshrinees in Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr and Jimmy Foxx. In the 10-2 victory, Mills allowed just four hits and walked a pair as he went the distance. Two of the four hits against him were by Jimmie Foxx who hit a solo homerun and a triple while scoring one run. Ben Chapman accounted for the other two hits which were both singles. Foxx's homerun was his 29th, on his way to 50 (his only other 50+ HR season was in 1932 when he hammered out 58), for his 408th career longball. Foxx's triple was the 99th of his career and sixth one of the season. For Mills, the victory was his fifth of the year and the sixth of his career. Next to his 1-0 shutout of the Yankees on June 18, this game was one of the finest of his career. Why would anyone care about a 15-30 pitcher with a 6.06 career ERA? The answer for me is quite simple. Mills learned to play baseball in the Navy in 1931 and became a dominant pitcher by 1933 with scouts champing at the bit trying to get him out of the Navy to play in the majors. He was discharged in time for spring training in 1934 and even appeared in four games for the Browns before heading to the minors for some seasoning. The odds were against me to find a scored card from one of his 96 games. To find one from one of his 48 career starts, let alone from one of his 15 wins was darned-near an impossibility. I picked this up at the World Olympic Collectors Fair in Prague in June. Usually a pretty decent show for me as a seller. This one was my best ever for adding items to my collection and selling. Always nice to pay for part of the trip with sales. This time paid for two round trip business class tickets (wife and myself) on my favorite airline, plus all of my purchases. The selling and collecting mentality is also quite different. I got this program for €10 ($11+/-)

Glad this thread is back ( or at least where I could find it) I posted this already but this is where it belongs. 1932 Newark Bears Old Timers Day. Hans Wagner Dave Bancroft Ed Walsh. Must have been a great afternoon of baseball.
1932 was also the year Newark won their first Junior WS. They are listed in the top 100 best Minor league teams of all time. |

Picked up this neat program tied to Bob Gibson’s 3rd MLB appearance. He pitched in the 8th inning of an 8-1 loss to the Giants on April 18th, 1959.
After this game he was sent down to the minors until he returned to the Majors on July 30th to record his first MLB win against the Reds. |

Recently picked up this Game 2 World Series program of the White Sox vs Dodgers. What really amazed me about this program is the ticket, letter from Bill Veek, and a newspaper scorecard filled out inside. The program scorecard has not been scored.
This program also educated me. I was unaware that White Sox tickets for the 59 Series were sold by lottery - a brainstorm of Mr. Veek's I'm assuming. I also didn't know there was a letter that accompanied the tickets to lucky person getting drawn to attend a game! The program is in outstanding condition, except for where the ticket, letter and scorecard have been stapled to the program. Somone really loved this program and the whole experience. Unfortunately, I'm not a White Sox fan. Has anyone ever seen one of these letters before? Just curious. |

Picked this up from REA part of my Portland Maine collection. What made this interesting to me aside from the south Portland HS was the location of the store Beneth Prebble House. Pebbles are relatives. And Commodore Prebble Was Captain of the US Constitution.

Need Advice - Worth Getting Autographed?
Hi All - I need some advice on if getting a program autographed is worth the investment of purchasing a players signature.
I have a handful of 1978 opening day weekend programs that featured the Giants vs. Padres. The significance of this program is Ozzie Smith’s MLB debut occurred during this series. While none of the programs are scored, which means I can’t state for certain if the program is aligned with his debut, I know they are from the series in which he debuted. If I were to get him to autograph these programs, would collectors actually purchase them for above the cost of obtaining his signature (around $100)? I’ll be keeping one for myself, but just curious what others thought the value may be worth? For comparison, the same program that was scored from his debut game and signed “MLB Debut” by Ozzie sold on eBay this summer for $500. |
I'm probably not the best person to answer your question, because I only collect scored programs and I don't particularly care for autographs, but...
I believe you are asking if a signed program that can be pinpointed to a particular series, but not necessarily a particular game, could potentially be worth the same as a signed program from the particular game? I think you already know the answer to your question. Doug PS - while I appreciate the 'value' of a major league debut program, an argument could be made that a major league first hit program has similar, or possibly greater, value. |

I got this one recently, but admittedly I almost passed on it. It was probably scored by a kid or someone unfamiliar with the names of the players, and apparently without any attempt to try to score the game the way most might have typically done it. In fact, every out is indicated by a "K." That's ironic because in this particular game, we had a 11-inning dual between Koufax and Bunning that resulted in 28 K's between them (Koufax had 16) before the relievers were called in for the 12th inning.
With this game, according to SABR, Koufax moved up on the all-time strikeout list to 10th passing Grove on the way, and it also gave him 200 K's for the 6th straight year. Lastly, it was also apparently the first time 2 pitchers met that had each thrown a perfect game before. What first caught my eye was all the K's that were written in the scorecard. It prompted me to do some research, and when I found out what an interesting game this was, I decided to get this scorecard! |
