Thanks for the info Howard. I did see that auction and also came away empty handed. Somehow I missed the 1960 ring. I see there are 100 more Clemente family lots in their current auction. I bid on a few but remain pessimistic about my chances.

Day 95
I won this next item on eBay last year and when I received it, I was surprised at how small it actually was, even though this is the smaller variation of two coins. There is also a pendant version in addition to the two coins. I posted a picture with a quarter for size reference. 1973 Memorial Coin small size... http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...lCoinSmall.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...SmallScale.jpg |
Day 96
Just as I was surprised at how small the coin I posted yesterday was, I was similarly surprised at how large this coin was. Much larger & heavier. 1973 Memorial Coin large size... http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...lCoinLarge.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...LargeScale.jpg |

I'm curious what others think about multi-player panels, but I really love them (mainly Bazookas, but I like Hostess, and even Berk Ross in this format). I have a '63 and '65 Bazooka panel with Clemente, and I really like them, though I know some purists prefer the single player image and standard size. |

I love complete boxes and panels. Wish I had more, but they have been pricey for a while. I did have some Hostess panels and singles, but have sold most of them off. Mike |

I believe this next item was a stadium giveaway. I have seen more than one copy floating around, but definitely a period piece. ca. 1970s Stadium Giveaway Snapshot photo... http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...umGiveaway.jpg |

I have been wanting one of these Louisville Slugger commemorative black bats for a long time. They were given to the players and staff of the year's World Series teams. They were not made available to the public and as such the 1971 versions tend to be hard to find and cost prohibitive...at least on my budget. My understanding is that less than 100 for each World Series team were created. They were produced annually between the early 1930s to the late 1990s. I was struggling to sleep last night and came across these two for Baltimore and Pittsburgh listed as a pair. The asking price was half what I was willing to pay for the Pittsburgh bat alone. Sometimes sleepless nights pay off.

Nice pickups Mike!

2 - The Congressional medal comes in 4 variations (Not including the 2 solid gold ones minted) - large - numbered (1-1950), large unnumbered (50), small bronze and small gold plated (don't know the quantities on those) - I do have one of the gold plated small ones I will post when I find it. 3 - Plug - I consigned a really nice 1962 Kahn's Clemente to Heritage for anyone interested: https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c...ignment-112816 |

Day 99 1968 Team Issue Photo...Not sure how to tell the difference between 1967, 1968 and 1969 team issued photos. They all look the same to me. There's an eBay auction right now with all 3 listed in one lot and I can't seem to tell the difference. Anyone know? http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...sTeamIssue.jpg |
I'm not sure how the '69 compares to following--haven't seen one, but the '67 and '68 differ in subtle ways. The '67 has a smoother/glossier type surface whereas the '68 is almost imperceptibly rippled-like. Also, the '67 has ever-so-slightly wider boarders, whereas the '68 has an ever-so-slightly larger photo compared to slightly narrower boarders (the whole card of course measures exactly alike).

Day 102
1960 Pittsburgh Pirates placemats... The first one pictured is the most common. I believe I have seen versions with advertisements on the bottom border. From my experience, the 2nd and 3rd placemats are much more difficult to find. Although in rough shape, I really like the 2nd one as it also pictures the 1960 Yankees. http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...60Placemat.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...TheYankees.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...wSweetItIs.jpg ca. 1961 Pirates Ticket envelope (not 100% sure)... http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...etEnvelope.jpg ca. 1960s Pirates souvenir sheet. Note they used the Willie Mays nodder and applied Pirates decals to it...also priced at $1.50. http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...venirSheet.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/docpatl...SheetClose.jpg |

Did you know the Nabisco photo is the same photo used in the SI Posters, and I believe those cheap playing cards made from paper - Globe Publishing.

Day 108
1980-83 Baseball Legends... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...allLegends.jpg The card is common, but these are the only wrappers of this style that I have seen. They are very heavy paper stock and I'm assuming they used these initially (they have the typical fold lines from packaging) before replacing them with a cheaper, generic wax wrapper which I will show later in the post. When I purchased this lot, one wrapper stood out from the rest. It appears to have been printed on a different paper stock color (more white than yellow). I know this may not seem like a big deal to some, but when you are a player collector, it's little finds like these that make me continue to search for oddball items. https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...WrapperLot.jpg White wrapper... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...apperWhite.jpg Yellow wrapper... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...pperYellow.jpg The next item is not mine, I am posting to show the different version wrappers. https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...egends%201.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...egends%202.jpg |
Interesting!
I have never seen the wrappers or pack/box from that set. With you 100% on looking for those small (or big) variations as a player collector - I remember having collected bazooka boxes for years when I found out about the 2 size variations!! (Thanks Larry S.) I was completely jazzed and amazed.

A number of Clemente original 35 mm slides have come up for auction lately. I recently picked up this one and could not be happier. Its one of the better ones I have seen.
|
Hi Mike,
I’ve seen a lot of those slides and have considered bidding, but wasn’t sure if they were period slides. Do you think they’re from the early 70s? |
They are from the early 1970s. I actually was lucky enough to pick up a couple real cheap and when they arrived they had Malcolm Emmons name written on them. One of them was a Danny Murtaugh image that was actually used for a Sporting News cover.

Was Clemente considering retirement early? While I didn't follow him too much while he was active, I've never heard that story. Anyone know any details? . |
Quote:
I think it was more of a hypothetical question posed on the cover. Clemente hit .345 in 1969 and would end up batting .352 in 1970 so he still had it in him. Maybe it's in reference to his nagging injuries but truth be told, I didn't read the article:( |

So, I got the year correct and the title wrong. It is "renaissance pittsburgh" magazine. Do you know if that is tied to the Pittsburgh renaissance hotel? A couple of other Clemente items while I'm at it. A rare - 7x9 team issue photo, a more modern print of a great image of Clemente holding a baby, a 1973 Bradenton program with Clemente cover and a 1969? Food land photo album.

Day 128
So the story behind this next item is when my oldest daughter was in elementary school, she was assigned the task of creating a hand puppet (of a famous person) with the "help" of a family member. She knew I was a big fan of Roberto, so he was her choice. Now going into this team project, I knew there was no "I" in team, but I also knew that there was a "me" in team, because from the start, all the work was done by me. This annoyed me at first, but as the project moved forward and I saw how "nice" the puppet was coming along, I started to enjoy it. It got to the point that when my daughter actually wanted to help, I wouldn't let her, because I thought she would mess it up...lol. But wait, I get more pathetic. The day she brought it into school, I really didn't want her to. I thought it was going to get ruined being in her backpack or by classmates touching it. I made her promise not to let her friends play with it... When she came home from school that day, the first thing I said to her was..."Where's my puppet?!?" Sad.......very sad. So without further ado... ca. 1990s Roberto Clemente Hand puppet... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...HandPuppet.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ndPuppetBk.jpg |
It's an illness my friend. Nonetheless that's a great story.
